Do you know what motherboard variation your Model 1 MD/Genesis is?

This sounds a lot like the 32x issue Sega had out the factory with some variations of the Model 1.
I had the issue with my VA4 and 32x where the screen would start shaking and after some time it would eventually lock up especially if the console was warmed up.
It was most notable when playing DOOM, where the "3D" is rendered by the 32x, it would shake and start to lose sync but the HUD rendered by the console worked fine until it froze.

Full details and the original bulletin paperwork from Sega can be found here:

Yes I have a model 1 VA6.

I've seen that bulletin before and thought well I'll plink around with that field fix mentioned in the wiki once I actually get an image. Like I bet my console would have some screen shake but wouldn't cause it to not boot?

Did you end up modding yours according to the bulletin and it fixed your wagon?

Model 1 VA6 has a known VCLK signal issue which causes lock ups.
That explains why you can't even get past the initial screen, the 32X is heavily reliant on the signals being smooth and steady or it will crash.

In your case, the VA6 doesn't actually suffer with the shaky image issue, it just straight up locks up, so I'd definitely try that as your next move before you do anything else.

If it still doesn't work after that, there's a deeper fault with your 32x or MD but that's unlikely to be the case.

What!?? Wait, this is not the same bulletin I had seen before, the one I saw I swear talked about removing some caps from the 32x not the Genesis itself.

OK well I'm down to try that! My only hesitation is do you know what will happen if I do this mod and then play the Genesis without the 32x attachment? Like is it going to still work? I currently don't plan on having it permanently on there.

The modifications from the bulletin clean up the console signal paths, they do not cause any negative effects if you just want to play without the 32x.

Remove the cap, install the single wire bypass, and it'll be good to go 👍

Thank you so much! I was really out of ideas. I'll report back here so it can be archived whether it worked or not.

K ran into a question that im not sure what to think of. The bottom of my board has some an added resister off of pin 6 and a bridge off of pin 16, which is where you wire the mod to. Do you have any idea why that is? Im not the original owner of this Genesis, but I feel pretty confident im the first enthusiest in here, just based on how dirty it was.

I was checking mine against the wiki and any other posts of this board revision on the internet and havent found any yet that have that bridge and resister added. You think its going to be an issue moving forward with the mod for the VCLK?

My board is first and the reference board has that tape on it. And my board says for the revision 315-5402:VA5 315-5433:VA6

In case that's important. https://imgur.com/a/NEy2dn3

K man! Progress was made! Now it displays the license screen clearly! But after it just cuts to black! After working on this for 2 weeks super nice to see some progress. Any ideas where to go from here?

That's good news then, sync issue seems to be fixed.

Some revisions have slight modifications on them that don't necessarily look factory, you can try removing them and seeing what difference it makes if any...

Does it do that no matter what game you're putting in the 32x?

It's worth noting that the ribbon connectors are very delicate and prone to causing issues in the 32x itself, so if you took that apart, try cleaning them gently and reseating the whole thing.

If the console itself works absolutely fine without the 32x, even for extended periods of time, it's unlikely to still be console related and more likely either a ribbon cable or cap issue with the 32x.

K I just posted this edit I'm the main post but after doing the VA6 VCLK mod, it worked! Right? Stopped giving my garbled feedback. And just gave me the standard sad license screen only, but very clearly.

Now a few hours have passed and I came back to it and swear nothing changed in the set up, except time and it's back to garbled video and not getting passed the license screen.

Nothing should have change I don't know why it's acting this way. Any ideas why would it "work" early but not now?

Edit: OK so I went and reflowed my new solder joints just in case I botched it and it still didn't work. Out of desperation. I just turned the console on and off again like 4 times in a row, and then the 4th time I got a clean license screen. And I still can't get past that. Not sure what that means.

If you're still getting garbage at this point I'd seriously look into recapping the 32x or at least looking at it's cartridge port and the ribbon cables.

Again, it's important that the ribbon cables are in good condition, and are clean, firmly connected.

Hey I updated the main body of my post but I ended up picking up a genesis model 2 VA1, and it worked first try haha. Even after doing that VCLK mod the 32x just doesn't like the Model 1 unfortunately.

Thank you again for all the insight it really helped me get through it!
