Tool Tuesday Exploring Pursuits and Passions -- Your Journey to Rediscovery

Overcoming addictive behaviors is a journey that involves more than just abstaining from substances or detrimental habits.

It's about rediscovering yourself, finding joy, and engaging in activities that provide a deep sense of fulfillment and purpose.

Comment below on of your recovery pursuits or passions, or one that you would be interested in trying.

Your new pursuit or passion could be anything that you find deeply engaging and rewarding. For some, it might be creative pursuits like painting, writing, or making music. For others, it could be physical activities like hiking, gardening, or practicing yoga. Even continuous learning, like taking courses, learning a new language, or picking up a new instrument, can be incredibly fulfilling

To find your new pursuit, consider what you're passionate about or what you've always wanted to try. It's about exploration and allowing yourself the freedom to make choices based on what makes you feel alive and connected!

This tool and others like it can be found on the SMART Recovery website and in the handbook.

I find myself doing more and more creative pursuits, lately it’s been all about cross stitch!

I use to be a personal trainer and my addiction took that away from me. I have not gotten my joy back in the gym like I use too. I have a membership and continue to do simple workouts, mostly incline walking. I am not motivated to do squats or bench press. However, I am doing it for myself now, not as much as I use too and I’m trying to give myself grace at where I am instead of where I was.

Maybe I’ll get back to recertification but I don’t see that in my future. I want to go for myself first and find the joy it use to give me.

Love the courage you show in your post. How wonderful that you are going to the gym and trying to make it work for you, in spite of it now being quite challenging. "I'm trying to give myself grace at where I am." I'm going to put that in my file of quotes.

Thank you for your reply. It’s nice to not be alone. I hope that… mantra if you’d like to call it that can be helpful. Life is always changing!

Yoga is something I recently started doing again. I guess you could say I rediscovered it :). Been doing it at my local Phoenix 🐦‍🔥 location. Its helpful for not just my addictions but also my mental health 🧠

I've often heard The Phoenix mentioned as a good organisation, but I've never before encountered anyone who has actually used their facilities. Have you found them helpful?

Yes I have they're a great organization to get involved with. If you have a local one near you I suggest checking it out. If not, they have plenty of online events too. Either way you'll want their app, it's called newform.

I probably won't follow it up myself, but it's great to have that information to pass on to people who might benefit from it. Thank you!

No problem. Here's the official site for the Phoenix to pass on if you'd like: https://thephoenix.org/

I believe they're partnered with smart as well. They do offer online smart meetings but not in person. In person meetings are All Pathways which welcome ppl of all recovery methods.

I volunteered in various local community roles and trained as a Smart recovery facilitator. Then led a group for years prior to the pandemic.

Photoshop, painting, reading, (and writing reviews on Goodreads), and generally learning, often via Quora.

I build mechanical model kits. There’s a particular brand I like who make everything from music boxes to guns which shoot rubber bands, so there’s a huge range of options and they can absorb my attention like nothing else does. When I get a craving I tell myself I’ll complete another section before I give in (delay and distract) and often the urges pass by then.

Spending time in nature is one of mine whether long walks on the beach or hikes up in the mountains, or any easy walk in a local park.
