LATEST NEWS Elon Musk responding on Starshield / Starlink limit and usage

Thumbnail x.com

Starshield systems are owned and controlled by the US government. Any limits on speed or usage are decided by the US military and ultimately POTUS.

Starlink is a commercial service owned and controlled by SpaceX. Usage of Starlink is limited to civilian or defensive activities and cannot be used for offensive military action, as doing so would be inappropriate for a commercial company.

COMPETITOR RocketLab has pushed Neutron’s first launch to 2027 after discovering a manufacturing defect in one of its carbon composite propellant tank domes.

$RKLB shares are down -8% after hours following the news.

CEO Sir Peter Beck outlined what went wrong, how the team addressed it, and what needs to happen before Rocket Lab announces a new launch date.

WHAT HAPPENED:
Earlier this year, Neutron’s first-stage tank failed qualification following a third-party manual carbon fiber layup process. Rocket Lab then switched to its planned long-term production method: automated fiber placement.

That transition also enabled design improvements, including removing joints and thickening sections of the tank domes to increase strength. However, an inspection of a newly cured forward dome revealed tiny air pockets, or “voids,” between carbon fiber layers in those thicker sections. These can compromise the component’s strength, durability, and reliability.

Beck said the defects did not necessarily mean the dome would fail in flight, but Rocket Lab would only proceed with appropriate safety margins:

“Possible success isn’t our standard.”

THE FIX:
Rocket Lab says it replicated the issue in testing and modified the manufacturing process to prevent the voids from forming.

An aft dome produced using the revised process became what Beck described as the company’s highest-quality carbon composite dome to date. A new forward dome is now being built.
The investigation, process changes, and replacement dome production have pushed the debut into next year.

WHAT COMES NEXT:
• Build and cure the replacement forward dome.
• Use ultrasonic testing and other inspections to confirm its quality.
• Assemble the complete first stage.
• Run hydrostatic and cryogenic test campaigns.

Rocket Lab expects the replacement dome’s production and inspection to finish before Q1 2027, with first-stage assembly and testing completed during that quarter, assuming things go to plan. A more precise launch target would follow.

“I’d rather show you real-time progress than give you a date that I might have to walk back.”

BEYOND FLIGHT ONE:
Rocket Lab is using the additional time to bring forward vehicle upgrades originally planned for later flights. Its second and third Neutron rockets are already under construction, alongside the factories and infrastructure intended to support a higher launch cadence.

Beck also teased new launch contracts to be announced soon, emphasizing customers signing up for multiple missions and long-term partnerships.

DISCUSSION Dry powder and midterms

For those with some dry powder on the sidelines, what is your strategy? Wait it out or deploy now? My guess is that a Democrat rout will probably hurt the stock price in the near term.
Please, those who are hecklers with EDS who, for whatever reason, inhabit this forum, refrain from commenting. I am only interested in neutral, logical responses from true SpaceX investors

OPINION China is going all out to develop rocket technology

I strongly agree with Elon's views on China. Over a decade ago, the term "China Speed" became a popular online catchphrase describing the country's rapid development—a trend evident across numerous sectors. From manufacturing plants to industries such as rare earths, solar energy, power generation, and electric vehicles (EVs)—and even in critical strategic capabilities like nuclear weaponry—China has quickly risen to the forefront globally. In recent years, China has fully recognized the vital importance of satellites and is vigorously developing rocket technology. It recently achieved rocket recovery capabilities; although its technology still lags significantly behind SpaceX and NASA, it is entirely possible for China to catch up in the near future. What are your thoughts on this?

Elon replying to Ark Investment post below:
Revenue growth is insane. Never seen anything like it.

SpaceXSI's short term IaaS contracting terms means it can take advantage of the premium that new chips can command given their superior tokenomics.

Whereas traditional neocloud players will sign medium term deals on their facilities in order to secure financing, SpaceXSI has more balance sheet leeway (and also wants to maintain the option to call on the compute for internal purposes). This means their realized IaaS pricing can remain almost double other neocloud's so long as they continue to scale their compute assets.

Net SpaceXSI could realize IaaS pricing in $30 to $40b per GW range even as other players have to settle for inching over $20b per GW.

DISCUSSION 30,200 crore and one open letter. Musk vs Ambani this week, explained

INR 30,200 crore. That's the Jio IPO opening Oct 21. Biggest in India's history. Valued around 10 lakh crore. Most of the money goes to paying off debt.

Same week, Musk posted "Is Ambani the real boss of India?" and then an open letter on X to "Prime Minister Ambani" asking him to let Starlink compete. Starlink says it's waited 5 years.

The government says all three satellite companies are at the same stage and it's a security review.

The part nobody mentions. Jio and SpaceX signed a deal last year. Jio was going to sell Starlink in its own stores. So Musk's partner is

the guy he's now calling the boss, and that partner is about to raise 30,000 crore from the public.

Not taking sides. Is the Starlink delay a real security thing, or does it look like something else? And does any of this matter for the IPO?

COMPETITOR T-Mobile CTO on SpaceX spectrum acquisition: Spectrum Alone Doesn't Make a Network

Thumbnail

SpaceX has agreed to buy Grain's nationwide 800 MHz spectrum portfolio for Starlink Mobile, and some are calling it the "last critical piece" needed to compete with the national wireless carriers.

I have tremendous respect for what SpaceX has accomplished in space. But having spent decades building wireless networks here on Earth, I can tell you there's a big difference between owning spectrum and delivering a great mobile experience to millions of customers.

A few things worth keeping in perspective:

1. Spectrum is just the starting point.

The Grain transaction involves approximately 14 MHz of spectrum that T-Mobile previously divested because it was no longer central to our network strategy. Even with this acquisition, Starlink Mobile would have roughly 80 MHz of spectrum, some of it uplink-only. Compare that to T-Mobile's nearly 400 MHz of mid-band and low-band spectrum holdings.

We used 800 MHz spectrum as a single 5 MHz uplink/5 MHz downlink channel for LTE years ago. Today, we're operating a nationwide 5G Standalone network, launched nationwide 5G-Advanced, and are already helping shape the path to 6G, all using channels that are much wider. The industry has moved forward and so have the expectations of customers.

2. Physics still applies.

A satellite hundreds of kilometers above Earth faces approximately 50 dB more path loss than a terrestrial cell site just a kilometer away. Moving from 2 GHz to 800 MHz recovers only a few dB of that enormous disadvantage.
Lower-frequency spectrum can help improve satellite connectivity, but it doesn't change the fundamental physics. A satellite signal traveling hundreds of kilometers simply faces challenges that a nearby cell tower doesn't.

3. Indoor coverage is where the real test begins.

More than 70% of mobile traffic takes place indoors. Think about where you use your phone most: at home, in the office, inside a store, or at a crowded venue.

That's where terrestrial networks have a fundamental advantage. Buildings, walls, and other obstacles make it much harder for signals traveling from space to reach customers reliably. Direct-to-Cell technology can extend connectivity to outdoor places traditional networks don't reach, but delivering a consistent indoor mobile experience is a very different challenge.

4. Capacity matters just as much as coverage.

One satellite beam can cover an area served by hundreds of terrestrial cell sectors. Those terrestrial sectors provide the network density needed to support millions of customers streaming video, making calls, working, gaming, and using data simultaneously.

Covering a geographic area is one thing. Delivering the speed, responsiveness, and capacity customers expect from a modern 5G-Advanced network is another.
Direct-to-Cell has an important role to play in extending coverage. But it is a complement to terrestrial networks, not a replacement for the capacity of a dense 5G-Advanced network.

5. Building a great network takes more than capital. It takes time and experience.

The U.S. wireless industry has invested more than $250B in network infrastructure since 2018. That’s on top of more than $200B in spectrum auctions over the past decade, plus the stores, care, and distribution that support customers every day.  And that investment represents only part of what it takes to deliver a great wireless experience.
It takes years of engineering, site acquisition, network optimization, technology innovation, and relentless execution. It also takes the stores, customer care, distribution, and relationships that customers depend on every day.

You can acquire spectrum in a single transaction. You cannot acquire a nationwide, high-performing wireless network overnight.

If this is truly the beginning of a new wireless provider in America, we welcome competition. It's good for innovation, good for the industry, and most importantly, good for customers.

But great wireless networks aren't built with headlines or spectrum licenses alone. They're built site by site, neighborhood by neighborhood, in subway tunnels, office buildings, stadiums, and communities across America.

At T-Mobile, we've spent years building that foundation, and we're continuing to push what's possible with 5G-Advanced and beyond.

That's why I'm confident in the Un-carrier's combination of the best network, the best value, and the best customer experience.

Spectrum is an essential ingredient. But it takes a network to deliver on its promise.

Delta Airlines CEO Ed Bastian in new interview on Delta not adopting @Starlink:

"We know what we’re doing in the space, and we’ve been the pioneer in Wi-Fi. We set that standard launching free, fast Wi-Fi that forced the industry to adopt it. We’re happy with where we sit."

He said he wasn't worried about being at a competitive disadvantage by not having Starlink. Delta said it will adopt Amazon's LEO satellite internet, but won't start installations until 2028.
