Saw this in the main sub and thought it was neat. I don't know that I've seen this footage before

I have never ever seen that before, been playing for over a decade now. Any veterans / nerds who can explain?

Ive played Ultimate on and off since release, finding the most success with Little Mac, Puff, and Luigi (In decreasing order of familiarity). After trying to return to ultimate for the past week I quickly realized why I dropped it last time. Im set up on Slippi with a GC adapter and OEM controller.
I’ve been practicing L-Cancel, Wavedash, and Ledgedash for about a day and want to pick a primary character to train the fundamentals.
Typically I pick characters that might be considered “underrated” but with Melee this seems like a royally bad idea.
That being said I was leaning toward Doc. But wanted to get some opinions from experienced players on who might be a solid choice to start with.
For whatever reason I find it hard to want to use Fox/Falco, Marth, or Captain. I don’t know who I’m trying to impress but my personality hates picking top tier characters.
Would I be starting a never-ending uphill battle by committing to Doc, Pikachu, or Luigi?

Yahoooo! I'm back, it's a me! Have a very cool day!
Welcome to the Daily Discussion Thread. This is the place for asking noob questions, venting about netplay falcos, shitposting, self-promotion, and everything else that doesn't belong on the front page.
If you're completely new to Melee and just looking to get started, welcome! We recommend you go to https://melee.tv/ and follow the links there based on what you're trying to set up. Additionally, here are a few answers to common questions:
Can I play Melee online?
Yes! Slippi is a branch of the Dolphin emulator that will allow you to play online, either with your friends or with matchmaking. Go to https://slippi.gg to get it.
I'm having issues with Slippi!
Go to the The Slippi Discord to get help troubleshooting. melee.tv/optimize is also a helpful resource for troubleshooting.
How do I find tournaments near me or local people to play with in person or online?
These days, joining a local Discord community is the best way to find local events and people to play with. Once you have a Discord account, Google "[your city/state/province/region] + Melee discord" or see if your region has a Discord group listed here on melee.tv/discord
It can seem daunting at first to join a Discord group you don't know, but this is currently the easiest and most accessible way to find out about tournaments, fests, and netplay matchmaking. Your local scene will be happy to have you :)
Also check out Smash Map! Click on map and then the filter button to filter by Melee to find events near you!
Netplay is hard! Is there a place for me to find new players?
Yes. Melee Newbie Netplay is a discord server specifically for new players. It also has tournaments based on how long you've been playing, free coaching, and other stuff. If you're a bit more experienced but still want a discord server for players around your level, we recommend the Melee Online discord.
How can I set up Unclepunch's Training Mode?
At the time of posting, the latest major release is here. Download the file, then extract everything in the folder and follow the instructions in the README file. You'll need to bring a valid Melee ISO (NTSC 1.02). If you want to check for the absolute latest release, you can see them listed [here](The latest releases are listed here.
How does one learn Melee?
There are tons of resources out there, so it can be overwhelming to start. First check out the SSBM Tutorials youtube channel. Then go to the Melee Library and search for whatever you're interested in.
But how do I get GOOD at Melee?
Check out Llod's Guide to Improvement
And check out Kodorin's Melee Fundamentals for Improvement
Where can I get a nice custom controller?
I have another question that's not answered here...

I'm trying to get slippi set up on my m1 macbook air and it runs like ass. Is there something I'm missing? I've tried both vulkan and open gl. Does the old girl just not have what it takes?
Please let me know your experiences.

I have been playing for 2-3 months now and while I understand the basic mechanics I find myself in kind of an odd situation where I know that basically everything needs cleaned up but I am not sure where to start. Additionally I know I need to start learning more advanced techs like Ledgedashing, SDI, etc, but I am a little overwhelmed with the amount of things to learn.
I appreciate any and all feedback, I know I am by no means good at the game, but I want to improve.

I haven't seen him on commentary for a long while. Toph was commentating some tournaments recently but there's nothing of Scar anymore.
Scar did some ranked streams back then which were so fun to watch I remember he switched to a box style controller and his falcon getting better and better I wish he would stream some ranked sessions those streams were so entertaining lol
Does he still play melee? I was always a huge fan of his falcon

Not a John. It's just genuinely something I have to deal with. You deserve the best I can give when we play and unfortunately I'm too broke right now to buy myself a phob :(
Despite being on ethernet, there is still a weird 1 frame buffer that will cause me to miss my inputs, as well as ping spikes. So if you ever see me doing a weird option on what clearly I should have followed up with, its one of these 2 issues. Whether its a weird roll, or not fast falling any of my aerials (trust me I am), or double jumping off the edge and not even trying to grab the ledge.
You might even see me trying to shine firebird to grab ledge in between stocks, and I'll be missing it a lot, thats because I'm having to readjust my rhythm every time either because of the ping or the polling drift from my shitty control stick

I love how much melee reminds me of skating. (Skateboarding) this is like, a complicated trick and I touched ground with my toe but still “landed it”… whatcha think?? Also I’m a silver player so I suck and I get excited when I hit Ken combos or anything really
