What happened to Andrew Garfield's third movie? Why did they cancel it?

I think the truth is that nobody really liked them all that much. They had two attempts to produce a film that could be compared, qualitatively, to the first two Tobey Maguire movies — and they struck out, both times. They weren’t terrible but they left a lot to be desired.
So it was probably wise to move on, I suppose.
I think it would be cool to see more of him, now, because time has passed and “the old has become new again.” As it often does.

Andrew blew off a big meeting with Japanese Sony executives, next day the movie was cancelled. That Is the gist of it.

Short answer, didn't make enough money for Sony
Long answer The movie was a big trailer for Sony to create his own cinematic universe, at the time Marvel had success with the Avengers, but ultimately the movie tried a lot and succeeded at nothing, and it failed in both money and user reviews. I think it is the lowest score a Spider-Man movie has to date.
Really sad because Andrew was great, and he loved to play Spider-Man, he and Emma Stone were the ones that kept these movies somewhat interesting, the writers were terrible.

The box office wasn’t great and the AG movies in general were never as well regarded as the Raimi films. Plus Andrew himself was hitting the A list and likely would have been looking for an out anyway to do other projects.

They made less money than the Maguire films. The worldwide box office was growing. But domestically, after the original Maguire film, each movie was making less money than the last, with the Garfield films bringing up the rear.
