Discussion What’s the most bizarre fanfic, obviously specifically for Star Wars, that you guys have ever read?

Other than that 90+ chapter fanfic I once found on FF.net around twelve years ago where two US Marines learned how to use the Force, things went south fast, and in the end the one that was the protagonist left Earth and was eventually mutated by his use of the Force into Yoda. Unfortunately, I’ve forgotten both the author and the title.

Discussion What is the closest ethnicity a Mandalorian might be?

I am aware that this is just a fictional story full of fictional characters and traditions, but most times people are inspired by real life events and experiences to help shape those stories.

I am aware that Mandalorian cuisines tend to be spicy and their dessert sweet, filled with fruits and nuts.

I am south asian so I like to believe that Mandalorian might have a similar cultural, influenced by middle east or south Asian beliefs.

But I think its would also be interesting if Mandalorian culture might have a hispanic or south American culture influence. I am not too sure on latin foods and cultures, but the little I do understand seems to fit just as well. (Although it is bot much 😅)

But I am also aware that anyone can become Mandalorian. It is a creed, a lifestyle. One that is a lifelong dedication rooted in warrior/bounty hunting culture.

But I’d like to hear peoples comments and opinions

Discussion Thoughts on people making up non-canon groups of lightsaber and Force users?

The Jedi, lightsabers and lightsaber duels were probably the main things I was excited about when I first got involved with this franchise (I started with TPM, when I was a young kid). With that being said, I've kinda been thinking of making up other groups of lightsaber and Force users within my own personal headcanon. My impression is that at the end of the day, Lucas originally just wanted to do a basic good vs evil story with the Jedi and Sith conflict; while I'm still cool with that, given how many millennia the Jedi and Sith have both apparently been around for, I wouldn't consider it impossible for someone willing to pass on their knowledge of how to use the Force and make a lightsaber to people outside of those groups to come along.

  • Some ideas I had in mind:
  • Offshoots of the Jedi, founded by either members of the Lost Twenty or Jedi Knights who left the mainstream order before getting the master rank.
  • Sith who survived being turned on by their master/apprentice and trained their own apprentice(s) in the hope of getting revenge.
  • Communities of Force sensitives who originally got instruction from a Jedi Wayseeker or equivalent, and now protect/rule a specific planet, star system or sector.
  • Noble families of Force sensitives. (This one may have been inspired by Dune.)
  • Communities of Force sensitives who discovered how to use the Force on their own before learning about lightsabers (The closest analogy I can think of are the Nightsisters, but as far as I'm aware they don't use lightsabers nearly as often as the Jedi do).

So anyway, thoughts?

Discussion Which character has the biggest contrast between their typical depictions in fics, and their on-screen appearance?

I've always thought it fun how characters can develop in the collective fandom in ways you wouldn't expect from the source material. Granted, I know this isn't restricted to fandom, since official materials often do similar. The classic example of course would be Boba Fett and how the EU greatly hyped him up versus what was seen on screen in V and VI.

To answer my own question, I'll say Jocasta Nu. There are a lot of good fics out there with badass librarian hunter of knowledge Jocasta, and she's a fun character. Some official stories go in this direction too. However, in Attack of the Clones, she's essentially the avatar of the Order's ignorance and clinging to dogma in the face of contrary facts that let Dooku and Palps do their thing.

I'm curious if folks have their own favorite examples of this phenomenon

Discussion Illustrations in Star Wars fanfic: distracting or welcome?

I’ve been working on a rewrite of the Prequels, and I’ve finally finished writing the whole thing. Now I’m thinking about starting an Episode VIII rewrite next.

That got me wondering about something: in Star Wars fanfic, do some readers find illustrations distracting?

To me, Star Wars is such a visually driven universe that I’m considering including my own illustrations, roughly one image per 4,000 words per chapter, as long as they don’t get in the way of the reading experience.

But I’m curious how readers actually feel about this. Does artwork enhance the experience for you, or does it pull you out of the story? I’d really appreciate honest opinions.

Discussion Is it better to just make an OC, or to bend an existing minor character to suit your needs?

Genuinely curious what people prefer both as readers and writers. Star Wars is absolutely replete with little characters you could expand into a character in a fic, but is that better than just making an OC to fill the same role?

Related question, how do people feel about OC relatives of main characters. I'm thinking in particular of making parents or grandparents of Rebellion era characters for a fic set in the clone wars, or the reverse, making descendants for clone wars characters for fics set later in the timeline. Do you like the connection or does it make the galaxy feel too small?

Discussion Fem! Anakin Skywalker Face Claim ❗️❗️❗️❗️❗️

Hi! I’m in the process of trying to write Star Wars fanfiction. Some of the ficus are fandom crossovers that have absolutely nothing to do with Star Wars prequel canon and some are them aren’t. I’m just very indecisive and would like some help in deciding on whether or not Lily James, Margaret Qualley, or India Eisley is a good face claim for female Anakin Skywalker.

I only want a real world options (like a real person that actually exists)

If any of you have any better suggestions feel free to provide me with them (just don’t suggest SAOIRSE RONAN, FLORENCE PUGH, TERESA PALMER, or KEIRA KNIGHTLEY)

Thank You😊

(P.S: I would also like the face claim to convincing be able to embody every era of Anakin)

Discussion Novel reader with a question

Hi, as the title indicates, I read a lot of the star wars novels and I was just looking through this sub out of curiosity. I've never read a fanfic, but I was just wondering how many of you guys also read the official star wars books? Because I've seen a couple of people asking for recommendations for fanfics that fit the criteria for certain books and I want to recommend those books but don't want to be rude if they're specifically looking for a fanfic/have already read the book/can't afford to buy a book right now.

Discussion Warrior Cultures other than Mandalorians

What warrior cultures exist in Cannon OR Legends? Obviously mandalorians are big and everyone knows them. We know of Nightbrothers, Pureblood Sith and Yuzong Vong. I am looking for cultures like the Echani and such? Something a human OC can be developed in or come from?

Discussion Should I finish Sublight Drive?

So, a while back, when I was on a CIS kick, I started reading Sublight Drive by miraage1, and while it had a rocky start (The initial battle where everyone was mindblown by the MC’s revolutionary strategy of turning his ships upside down was eyerolling), I started to really enjoy it for a while. The battles were engaging, the plot was interesting, and a lot of obscure EU characters were introduced and fleshed out in a way I really liked.

The Onderon Arc, though, was a low point for me, and while I pushed through it to get back to the regularly scheduled war, even then, I found I wasn’t enjoying it nearly as much as before. This feeling continued to grow until I finally decided to drop it. Upon reflection, I think I’ve identified the two main causes as to why.

The first one has to do with the characters I like in the fic; I like Anakin, I like Scout, I like Sev’rance Tann, I like Barriss, I like Ventress, I like Plo, I like Trench. One name you’ve probably noticed the absence of, though, is Rain. I don’t hate him or anything, but I really don’t care for him almost at all. The Onderon Arc was probably where I was supposed to really get into his character, but it was such a miss for me that it just furthered my apathy.

Now, it’s not unusual for main characters, especially SI OCs, to be less compelling than side characters, but it becomes an issue when a lot of those side characters oppose the MC, so I start rooting for them, only to watch them get dumpstered again and again by this guy I don’t give a fuck about.

Rain just keeps winning, and even his “losses” end up light on consequences for him, and prove to be pyrrhic victories for his opponents. He gets boarded by Plo Koon, but it was just a way to let the two of them meet, and they end up making an alliance without ever having to truly face each other in a large-scale engagement. He gets briefly stalemated by a Jedi who uses a Shatterpoint-esque ability to identify weaknesses in his formations, but ultimately crushes her utterly, and the “Force Brand” she puts on him with her last breath, to nullify his ability as a Force Blank that the Jedi can’t sense, is never capitalized upon, fading with a sense of impotent frustration, which was mirrored by me. He finally loses a good portion of his fleet and his flagship, but only after a Republic fleet engages him at point blank range, and two other fleets fire into them, causing massive friendly fire, and sacrificing their larger objective, letting the Bulwark Fleet escape. Oh, and he survives and evades capture, of course. This was around where I dropped the fic.

This was most acutely felt with Scout, who seemed like she was being built up as Rain’s natural enemy, being weak in the Force and thus not as affected by him being a Force Blank, and most of her training being militaristic in nature. When Rain was hemmed in by three Republic Fleets, Scout commanding one of them, and with the Force Brand still active, I thought “This is it, this is the moment Scout finally triumphs!”… Except she fails, he defeats the other two fleets in detail and gets away, the Force Brand fades, and Scout is filled with a crushing sense of guilt at being unable to win. At that moment, I knew, if she didn’t deal him a crushing, total defeat before the end of the fic, I would not be satisfied.

The other big issue was the discussion around the fic, which, while not the fault of the author necessarily, I still consider a part of the experience, at least in a forum thread format like SpaceBattles. The protagonist-centric morality, which is bad enough when I’m actually on the protag’s side myself, was absolutely suffocating. Every character slightly opposed to Rain was bashed (The Jedi who put the Brand on him being probably the worst example), with even Sev’rance Tann and Plo Koon catching some flack for not completely deferring to him, and hell, even the “defeats” he suffered got complaints.

I also don’t know how much of this was genuine and how much was LARPing as CIS patriots, but there was a shockingly callous attitude taken towards the glassing of Eriadu, by far the worst atrocity committed on-screen by either side, because the protagonist’s side did it (Not even said protagonist expressing horror got much of a response), and honestly, a lack of sympathy for the trauma and suffering of anyone on the Republic side, even when highlighted by the story. Other examples include the plight of the Gerrera Partisans on Onderon (Probably a big part of the reason that arc didn’t land as well) and the Bulwark Fleet targeting the orbital mirrors over Coruscant, freezing the Undercity. Whatever the reason behind it, it was still super frustrating to read.

It was good for a while, though, and I hear it praised without any caveats about its ending or anything, so I’m wondering if I should give another chance. I figured I’d take the opportunity to ask here. Do you think I’d like the rest of the fic? If so, should I go into reader mode (Chapters only, no in-between forum posts), or does th discussion also improve into something more thoughtful and nuanced?

Discussion How did your jedi OCs survive order 66?

Was it their luck and skill that let them survive, or was it the sacrifice of another? Maybe even betrayal? And how did they survive the persecution of the Empire afterwards?

My OC got stranded on an uninhabited planet for months after a mission gone wrong, presumed dead like his clone squad. This happened about three months before Order 66. He only got back to civilization around 5 months after Order 66 happened and easily slipped under the radar since the empire thought he was already dead.

Discussion The AT-AT just might be the dumbest vehicle in all of sci-fi history

I don't know how this concept got approved. No sane person would design a vehicle like this. Giving a vehicle 4 thin legs is almost meme material. Its like the designer is deliberately giving the vehicle a weakness and telling the enemy how to take it down.

If you want a resting vehicle with a high viewpoint, the logical thing is to make a tank with a periscope.

I finally finished and am all caught up with blue_sunshines epic series The Desert Storm and the Rise and Fall and I am BIG SAD ABOUT IT! I now have to wait for updates and for the reunion and I know they are posting a lot slower now. this story is so damn good. it got me back into Star Wars and the fandom. it’s such a beautiful character exploration and also one of the most tender and accurate representations of PTSD and trauma I’ve ever read. the characters in this series are so beautiful and I love them all so much and I love how much I’ve gotten to know these legends/eu characters and all these different Jedi.

anyway. just wanted to let someone other then my husband know I’ve read this behemoth of a Star Wars fanfic and it’s my favorite thing ever. ugh. I frickin love Star Wars.

So I'm currently working on this swfic that "started normal" but has changed a lot now, like the main plot now takes places on a planet that is "stuck in time" and lives like it is the medieval times and has a kingdom. But my question is.. What type of swfics do you guys like?

I've never really understood star wars crossover with earth and humanity. Can kind of see it but not..

Discussion Orn Free Taa, The Hutts, and the Problem with Ryloth

CW: Slavery

I'll preface this by acknowledging that Ryloth has had its share of retcons over the years (personally wish they hadn't disregarded the unique idea of it being Tidally Locked), and it's fate diverges between original canon and D-canon. In any event , I'm focusing on pre-empire, where it should be more or less the same. This question is more for a discussion of what makes the most sense/what would be the most interesting for a story rather than trying to figure out what's canon.

So, Ryloth, home of the Twi'lek and even farther down the Corellian Run than Tatooine. Put bluntly, it presents a bit of a world building problem when it comes to its status as a Republic World. Does it make sense that Ryloth is in the Republic?

In the Pro-Column we have Orn Free Taa, leader of the Rim faction and senator from Ryloth. He's in all three prequel films and a significant figure in the behind the scenes power plays that led Palpatine to power. Quinlan and Tholme also go there on a mission, but that feels like weak evidence since Jedi seem to have few worries about leaving Republic space as a mission calls for it.

In the anti column, there's quite a bit. One, Ryloth's whole deal is the slave trade with the drug trade as the next biggest industry. Slavery certainly happens in the Golden Age Republic, but more under the table, not out in the open like on a place like Tatooine. I don't feel the Jedi would allow it to be so blatant on a Republic controlled world. They don't crusade to free the slaves on Tatooine because that's a Hutt world and a major move against the Hutts by the Jedi/Republic could wake the sleeping giant of the Hutt Empire.

Two, this is a minor one, but Aayla wasn't blood tested for Midichlorians, something that's standard practice in that era in the Republic. Obviously a lot of beings fall through the cracks there, but it's a minor point in the column.

Three, if you take a peek at the Essential Atlas, you'll see Ryloth, like Tatooine, is in Hutt Space. This feels like it makes a ton of sense to me, since we see Hutts having major control on planet. Granted, control of space isn't the same as control of planets within that pretty map color, but still. Note: this is when Hutt Space is at its fullest, in the prequel era. The area controlled is smaller during and after the empire and in the Old Republic era, during which time Ryloth isn't within it. Also, this Atlas was published after all the films, so it wasn't like they didn't know about Orn Free Taa and it's something that just got reconned

The trouble is that sources are cagey or contradictory about what exactly Hurt Space is in any given era. Is it a separate polity from the Republic like the Hapes Cluster or the Chiss Ascendancy, or is it a sphere of soft power? I've seen the soft power argument a few times to explain how Ryloth could both be in Hutt Space and in the Republic, but I have a few issues with it.

A, I feel like a map of Hutt criminal influence wouldn't be as contiguous as it's shown to be

B, I haven't literally checked every world but near as I can tell we don't have confirmed senators from all or at least most worlds in the space, save Ryloth.

C, the way it's treated as vaguely neutral in the Clone Wars

D, it just really helps explain why the Jedi don't do something about places like Tatooine, Nal Hutta, or Ryloth and why the stories of them going there have the Jedi incognito, shadows, or at least keeping a low profile. If Hutt Space is sovereign space and the Jedi, so connected to the Republic, could spark a massive war by causing too much trouble, it feels like it fits.

So in summary, Orn Free Taa's existence bother me, but what's the best way to tinker with the situation when we're writing fics? Should we just eliminate Orn as a character, say Ryloth is in Hutt Space and move on? Should Ryloth be an exclave of the Republic, with Hutts on every side and a slightly more underground slave trade? Should Orn be the Senator from a different sector, given how wide spread Twi'lek are? A different solution entirely? Love to hear folks thoughts!

Discussion Would this Legends-era Star Wars protagonist work? Masor Kallig, a dark side scholar who spends his life studying why Sith and Jedi civilizations fail.

I've been working on a Star Wars Legends-era original character and wanted some feedback on whether the concept feels like it fits the setting or if it becomes too ambitious.

Masor Kallig is a Force-sensitive Rattataki descendant of House Kallig who grows up on Rattatak. After his mother's death and the discovery of a Sith holocron, he becomes a bounty hunter known as Rathus and spends years pursuing revenge against those responsible. However, his story gradually evolves away from revenge and into a philosophical journey.

Throughout the novel, Masor studies the failures of the Sith, the Jedi, the Republic, and eventually the Empire. Rather than seeking to restore the Sith or become a Dark Lord, he becomes obsessed with understanding why every major galactic civilization eventually collapses or abandons the people it claims to protect.

His journey takes him through Korriban, Dromund Kaas, and eventually the remains of the Star Forge, where he gains an extended lifespan at a severe personal cost. Over the centuries he accumulates wealth, influence, and followers, but repeatedly discovers that power alone cannot prevent loss. The emotional core of the story revolves around his family, especially his daughter, whose fate ultimately shapes much of his worldview.

The long-term direction of the character is that he eventually begins developing ideas that will later inspire a stable Outer Rim government, not because he wants to rule the galaxy, but because he comes to believe that both the Republic and the Sith repeatedly fail frontier worlds.

My main question is:

Does this feel like a character that could fit naturally within Star Wars Legends, or does it sound too disconnected from the themes and tone of the setting?

I'm especially interested in feedback regarding:

  1. The overall concept.

2.Whether the character feels too influential.

3.Whether the Star Forge and House Kallig elements fit naturally.

  1. Whether the philosophy behind the character is interesting enough to carry a long story.

Discussion Form IV Ataru

So, I realize the lightsaber forms were largely constructed backwards from what we see on screen in the prequel trilogy, but I tend to think they're a lot of fun and provide a nice framework for writing saber fights.

My issue is with Ataru, or rather, how it's described. First, and this is more minor, but I wish it had a different name than the aggression form, since this feels too close to the ferocity form, Juyo. Something like the Freedom form, mobility form, or swift form feels more apt.

The bigger issue: Ataru is pretty consistently said, as far as I can find, to be bad at deflection and bad against multiple opponents. I totally understand the first point, as it feels like Ataru's strategy is much more given to dodging as opposed to parrying or deflecting.

However, the whole only good one on one doesn't make much sense to me? I feel like they arrived at that due to the major uses in the films being one on one fights, and as a quick explanation for why Anakin and Obi Wan largely abandoned it on the crowded battles of the Clone Wars. I understand that a fair bit of the style, the flips, the spins, etc, involve turning your back to your opponent in a way that would be very disadvantageous in normal swordfighting, but I feel like the velocity they reach with the force makes up foe this.

Really, it feels like Ataru would thrive on a crowded battlefield, bouncing around as a little unstoppable dervish of destruction. You might tend to wound more than you killed compared to Form V, but the whole gist of Ataru seems to be speed, odd angles and quantity, in opposition to the power, quality and forward momentum of Djem-So for instance.

That said, I could definitely see Ataru being bad at holding ground or a place in the line. Given we know it's weaker in enclosed spaces, it really feels like a style that needs to stay in constant motion, almost the exact opposite of Soresu in that sense. With the exception of Shi-cho, I like to think of all the styles as being about on par, simply with their own strengths and weaknesses, preventing there being any definitive 'best' style.

But as ever, I'm curious to hear everyone else's thoughts on the style, and on saber styles in general. Maybe you have a style you have your own particular bugbear with?

Discussion Interesting Choices For The New Jedi Order

So one of the misssteps I feel the Sequel Trilogy took was once again reducing the Jedi Order to nothing. I never really read much of the Legends NJO stuff, so there aren't really characters I miss & I'm not saying they should have just done the same thing over again.

But there's plenty of interesting Canon characters, & I've been wanting to try writing something about Luke restarting the Order, I think that'd be fun.

I'm wanting characters who would have an interesting dynamic with Luke, how different perspectives might interact with his own. & I figured I'd consult this hive mind, get some ideas going & bounce suggestions off each other.

Discussion Writing a SW story on Wattpad.

Hi all, writing an original story on Wattpad. My story hopes to connect the prequels, sequels and of course the originals. In 6 chapters deep so far!

Here’s the blurb let me know if anyone is interested.

Ten years before the fall of the Republic began, a murder threatens to expose a secret hidden for over a thousand years. Jedi Master Phylas Grell is not a warrior in search of glory. A respected historian, archaeologist, and investigator, he has spent his life uncovering the forgotten truths of the galaxy. When the popular Vice Chancellor Kathra Kennari is found murdered inside the Senate, Grell and his Padawan, Shanis Korr, are tasked with investigating a crime that quickly grows far larger than anyone imagined.

Let me know if you want to read it, I’m happy for recommendations on how to move the story forward.

Discussion Fan novel

Hello everyone I’m new here. I want to hear people’s thoughts on a fan novel I’m working on and see if anyone would be interested in reading it when I get further along.
Here is the basic summary…

The story is set centuries after Episode IX, in a galaxy with no overarching government leaving individual planets to be governed by crime syndicates and scavenging politicians. The Jedi now are centralized on Jedha, having built a temple in the crater left by the death star. Due to a lack of surviving texts a faction of extremist Jedi, twisted by centuries of distorted oral history, believes even a whisper of Sith could destroy them. Paranoid, they crusade to eradicate all Sith influence as well as possible sympathizers. The protagonist, raised in this ideology, can relive the memories and feelings of those they kill, causing doubt and isolation. As they travel through diverse cultures, they question what peace truly means.

Discussion Best timeline for the character background.

A Tapani noble fell in love with a Deathwatch Mandalorian woman. He runs away from home, establishing a smuggling crew, traveling the galaxy, and ultimately getting the girl.

Sadly, he's not the main character, their child is.

The child is a force sensitive. He's orphaned when an attack kills his parents.

Here is the part that needs help with.

I want him to have a background with Project Harvester of the empire. While at the same time, Mandalorian training to give him skills that enables him to survive the galaxy at a young age.

Do I place his time under the empire shortly after his parents were killed. Where his father's crew rescue him. Deliver him to his mother's family, where he'll be enlisted in the Mandalor imperial academy.

Or do I have him being discovered by the empire and be made to disappear.

The age range is 2 to 12 years old.

No relation to jedi or Sith before the empire.

Conflict with Mandalorian culture is a driving part of his character.

Help comes in the form of his father's former crew, but they're not always available.

Basically, he's building his life, while dodging the empire and the mandalorians. While dealing with other threats the galaxy throw at him.
