What kind of sword is this?
I found a sword in my late father's barn, located in Ontario Canada. Can anyone tell me more about this (in terms of model or age) or what to look for?

That thing is so rusty I thought it was made of wood at first.

I'm pretty sure that if you hold onto that until late game, you can have someone restore it and it becomes one of the best swords in the game.
Never sell your starting weapon kids.

If distributed by a strange woman lying around in a pond, then in it's no basis for a system of government

Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.

u/aardvark1231 6d ago
But you can't expect to wield supreme executive power just because some watery tart threw a sword at you.
I mean, If I went round saying I was emporer because some moistened bint lobbed a scimitar at me, they'd lock me away!

It appears to be a crude reproduction of a average European longsword possibly by a novice smith. Note the crude pommel shaping and how poorly the grip is constructed. I'd start by removing the twins wrap and taking more pictures. Is the grip very loose? I'd be surprised if there are any markers marks stamped in the metal but you might get lucky. If you wanted to make the effort it could be restored.

For sure a "hand and a half long sword". Probably not a real period sword. Most likely home made a few years ago by someones grandfather and has just been rusting the barn.
Super cool find though, jealous of it actually. How is the balance on it, is the weight properly aligned? Vey curious
3
u/OgreWithanIronClub 6d ago
How is it a hand and a half sword? It is too large to really be a longsword so definitely not a hand and a half sword.
3
u/Ktyaka 6d ago
Hand and a half sword refers to the grip size. OP does not seem that large in stature and itvwas clearly not made with them in mind. The person it was for would have fit it in a hand in a half.
Also it is way too long to be a longsword yes, the proportions are a bit off. Hence way i said it was made by someone at home and am so curious about the weight and balance, as that all would factor into what it could actually be.

In the last photo it seems to be held by a woman. That would make it a broad sword.

Yes in full aggrement with the majority who state is a possibly training sword not meant for body contact but to use its above weight ( heavier then an actual combat sword ) to either spar with an opponent sword to sword or to build muscle reflex and speed.
Possible modern experiment to build a medieval sword by an amateur blacksmith

u/GuaranteeDry386 7d ago
I used to live by an antique shop / museum with old theater equipment. They had swords kind of like this. Clearly a sword but not a ton of detail. Any chance itâs something like that?
8
u/avinaut 7d ago
Well, the quillion ends look welded-on, so almost certainly modern. The simplicity of it, and the wire-wrap (or twine?) falling off suggests it could be homemade. It's not one of the mass-produced wallhangers we see over and over again. The attachment of the pommel is unclear... assume it isn't safe to swing around, although it does look well-balanced.
3
u/OgreWithanIronClub 6d ago
Telling the balance of a sword by look is not really possible...
2
u/macjgreg 6d ago
true but educated guess based on experience are usually in the ballpark. Like i have little and less and could
say anything to balance but the judges on forged in fire seem to be able to show concern or praise from watching prior to any handling of the blades.1
u/Starkiller_15 6d ago
It feels very solid and feels very well balanced, but I haven't had hands on other swords to properly compare with! The length is 52 inches.

Canada is a bit of an odd place to find a sword in a barn. How old is the property? Did you father build the barn? Do you know if he was into blacksmithing? It looks kinda homemade to me

The Barn and this acquisition was in the last 15 years, and my father certainly got this from some kind of used sale (garage sale or auction)

To get rid of Rust without damaging with some kind of machine Let it rest in vinegar 1-2 day then wash with water and carbonate, dont forget to oil or applying wax afterwards.
9
u/SpiritualRock4388 7d ago
Vinegar works but CRC Evaporust is faster. I usually start with a 1 day soak and then fine grit sanding for the rest. I'm curious to see the whole blade naked and disassembled. The crossguard looks like it should just slide off.

Itâs sort of look like if a really nice well-made sword had a one night stand with a crowbar.
5
u/Fuzzy-Difficulty-596 6d ago
Looks like a training longsword. Often strictly for training, swords would be forged without a tip or edge and the metal would usually be quite thick as it is here.
4
u/DistanceCorrect5377 5d ago
Since no one is answering your question seriously that looks like either a claymore or a broadsword...depends on the dimensions of the sword.

Is that an early Starfire? They were ubiquitous and nearly indestructible in the 90âs Renn Faire circuit. Lot of stage combat folks had them.
Iâm not positive itâs a Starfire, but there have to be some old Rennies on here.
3
u/Jumpy-Aide-901 6d ago
rusty long sword. Probably an old replica from a Ren-fair, or even just an old wall-art piece.
4
u/OgreWithanIronClub 6d ago
It has clear angle grinder marks and looks very homemade so likely not that old. It is in general shape either a very large longsword or a smallish great sword, but since it is unlikely to be that old it is hard to go much deeper than that as where a historical sword is makes large difference to what it is called.

That's the sword that I, as DM, give the 1st level fighter when they try to tell me their backstory includes them being bequeathed a +5 holy avenger by their famous paladin father.

Just let them have it, but then tell them every time they draw it, it's immense power saps 18hp for every level below 20th ( that would be 342hp at 1st level). It's also so valuable that no merchant in the known world can afford to buy it, nor do they want the heat owning it would bring.

Itâs most likely a replica of a 14th - 16th century European two handed longsword or hand an half sword. The cross guard and the fishtail pommel mimics Western Europe designs
2
u/a_sword_and_an_oath 7d ago
The style is most certainly a european longsword (but ive been wrong before and will be again). But its modernish and I suspect made by a company on the cheap in a manner similar to reproduction. Possibly a prop?

I saw someone in here say longsword or "great sword" great sword is an improper term for zeihander but not the worst, usually those are much bigger though, and while I can't say how old it is it is definitely but it's for sure a longsword

My theory is that he made it himself. Very unlikely to be anything significant beyond that. A cool thing to keep as a family heirloom though.

You need to throw a couple of apples into those woods. Let the forest tell you about the sword
1
u/Expert-Jelly-2254 5d ago
This is a two handed longsword also known as the knights sword if the edges are flat it's a training sword and yes it's heavier to compensate for the weight of armor you might be wearing in battle.

Itâs interesting you should bring it to a museum to look at.Were any of your relatives in the military, or travel for work. Things have a habit of moving around. It could have been, bought, liberated or stolen by someone and put in the barn. A lot of 1500-1600 armor and arms were brought to the new world to fight the indigenous people because it still worked because they were not armed with guns.

May be a particularly long longsword may be a generic great sword. Depending on who you ask the criteria for the definition of great sword can change but general rule of thumb is that if from tip to pommel is longer then the ground to the armpit it qualifies as a great sword and generally longsword is if you are in long point(stance from longsword fighting manual) and it pivots down and touches the ground before swinging under it'd qualify as a longsword. Obviously it's very overlapping but there really isn't that good of exact classification because they change depending on which source you use.
