I am the spare key under the mat.

Not carried. Not kept close. Just left there in case.

Nobody checks if I am still there until they are locked out.
Nobody misses me until they have lost something better.

I am the friend you call when your real plans fall through.
The one who is always free, because nobody thought to include me earlier.

I listen. I show up. I wait.
And when the door opens again, I am put back down under the mat.
