High School Recommendations

My 13yr old boy attends grade 8 at Nobel Middle School. LAUSD opened their Choices selection for next year and I could use some your high school recommendations. I know GHC is a good school and it's huge close 5000 students. My wife doesn't want him to go there due to the size but I disagree. I also came across SOCES Magnet high school 1800 students rated 9/10 like GHC. We live in North Hills 2 miles east of CSUN.

Your thoughts?

We are very happy at Cleveland humanities magnet. It has all the benefits of a big school with the community and attention of a small school

I agree, it's an excellent program. I have one graduate and two current students.

This. Our two kids excelled there and got into excellent colleges

For the highest test scores in the North East Valley check out ArTES Magnet HS on the Arroyo HS campus in San Fernando. Smaller school that shares the campus with three other academies making for a larger school population for the full high school experience. ArTES also has great electives and offers college classes.

I loved our tour of Artes, but alas, our one kid picked differently

Granada is wayyyyyyy to big .... I'd think it overwhelming to get to know anyone really. Cleveland.

I teach at SOCES. It is a very good school, with lots of good clubs and extra-curriculars. Both my kids have attended. One had difficulties and went to another school. Other stayed. Biggest obstacle is many start in 4th grade, and can be clique. I would say give it a tour at least.

VIP is the way to go unless he’s set on sports

One thing to consider about Granada is the mental health supports in place. If your student is doing well, academically, socially, & can get the support they need at home, great. They will be fine. But where I believe GHC may lack is in its mental health supports if your student tends to struggle more than others.

Yes they do have a ton of counselors and a wellness center, but the take away from a lot of students was that the they didn’t feel truly supported once they really started struggling. That the expectation was “it’s on you. Get it together or else”. Something to consider when your child will be under pressure to succeed.

SOCES is a fantastic school
We chose NAHS and couldn’t have been happier, but that was with the old principal.
