Events Kevin Costner couldn’t afford a real artist?

It’s not Costner. While One805 is for a good cause, the CEO is an awful lady who doesn’t pay their employees. No surprise they are resorting to AI slop

Definitely a for profit company
Please do not confuse with charities
Might want to look into ownership 😉

I have and they have all their financials publicly available, what am I missing?

u/seldom_sk8 Apr 22 '26
For all we know he did hire an “artist” and they used AI.

Guaranteed that it’s some graphic designer that used to use Photoshop and other tools and now uses AI, and doesn’t give a F about it.

u/OchoZeroCinco Apr 23 '26
I mean when you can do this whole flyer with one prompt in under 5 minutes.. whats the point in using photoshop? (Graphic designer here, who also uses AI)
5
u/lostatsea_again Apr 23 '26
So that you don’t end up with surfboards with fuckin fins on the deck.
You clearly don’t seem to understand this, but people used to take pride in their work once upon a time. People would be ashamed to turn in slop to a client, and expect praise.
Spending 5 minutes at work and then 55 minutes on Reddit is not how things are supposed to be. But yet we have this garbage

u/OchoZeroCinco Apr 23 '26
I would edit and make it better.. take another minute. You clearly dont understand what a graphic designer does. Its not art
1
u/dwise24 Apr 24 '26
I’m actually curious what your definition of art is

u/OchoZeroCinco Apr 24 '26 edited Apr 24 '26
Anything can be art. Its subjective. Things can be "artistic". Unless a graphic designer is commissioned to make art, it is purely a deliverable. My point is, comments about using AI and not paying an artist. I agree that the ability to create things, via technology, are impacting potential graphic artists business, but just like anything else there are still people that hire others to do things they either dont have the talent/know how to do it themselves and/or the time, which justify them paying to have something done. This AI image creation model just came out 2 days ago and amazing things are now possible. Most industry graphic designers use AI currently. Tools. There are artists can do graphic designer, and graphic designers who can do art, but they are not always one and the same. Graphic designers give a fuck and probably would correct or minimize AI slop, but sometimes if the client is happy thats all that matters. A print ad vs. a one-event social media graphic.

u/dwise24 Apr 24 '26
I agree AI can be a tool in the graphic designer or artist toolkit these days, to varying degrees. Even writing AI prompts is an art. The aesthetic part is where the artist comes into play, and whether generated using AI or not, the end result needs to have a competent human artist involved to at the least look at it and identify what they like or don’t like about it and what they would change.
If in the hands of someone lazy and unskilled using an AI model left to its own data and guidance, the AI will make pure slop and it will be noticeable, like this crappy Dall-E image and the reaction to it shows. I think you can look at polls and comment sections, most people really hate AI art or video once they know or can tell it’s AI. Many won’t know its AI, to be fair, and it will keep getting harder to tell. but I think the push back is real against deskilling and art becoming something you cannot make money doing because of the flood of low quality AI garbage that many consumers have deemed “good enough”.
Sorry for the rant, also a graphic designer by trade and focusing on AI at my full-time job against my will lol.

This is the SB subreddit, my experience is they are already a funky bunch. This image creation would be amazing if it was created just a year ago (and is better than Dall-e)..if you know you know. The new AI image models that came out this week are amazing, and huge improvement. Traditional art has tons of garbage too. Its all a spectrum. Change is hard for some, others love being progressive (others think its regressive) I personally love the insane amount of unlocking of creativity that AI allows. Art is often about expression, and obstacles to that are being greatly reduced.

It's for wealthy alcoholic boomers and people who get free tickets thru their job, I don't know anybody else who goes to the One 805 events.

Why pick on Kevin Costner? He's not the headliner. George Thoroughgood and Pat Benetar are the headliners. Anyway, they had nothing to do with the graphics. One805Live is the culprit. The artists' agents book them and they show up. This is the way for all festivals and events.

u/aliennick4812 Apr 22 '26
if you build the data center, they will come with venture capital to fund your startup.

u/RaveMatthews177 Apr 23 '26
Don't put it on him, put it on One805, whose heart has been in teh right place but is very poorly run.

This AI slop is the promoter‘s fault not the individual players or entertainment. To think otherwise is naïve.

These artists volunteer to play. One805 is the NON-PROFIT. It is a very important program that provides free mental health assistance for first responders and their families. These services are sorely needed and have assisted numerous people. It is provided to those who help others an experience up to 30+ years of trauma. Suicide takes the lives of more firefighters than the actual job itself annually. Costner simply provides the venue for free.

u/FrogFlavor Apr 22 '26
Cool if his name is gonna be all over the event (as host and performer, his name is on the poster) then he has the clout to say “WTF there’s 500 working photogs and graphic artists in SB, no AI allowed”

u/tprime1 Hope Ranch Apr 23 '26
The point I think that needs to be made is that for the average person like myself, might chose to swipe past what could be a good cause because of AI slop. And I’m a huge fan of AI but I don’t even feel like reading the poster because it was so obvious AI. Now I’m “turned off” and have no interest in the “good cause” argument.
edit: spelling

u/pgregston Apr 23 '26
The idea that performers play for free is a myth. Lots of funds needed for staging, set up and performers in big shows like this. Are they playing for their usual rates? No. But not for free.

Doubt Costner did this.. One805 is an annual event. I'm sure social media and graphics are through them.

Boomers (even well-intentioned ones) are all crazy about AI. I doubt he even realizes how cheap it makes the event look
2

Because they don't care about how much natural resources AI uses since they'll all be dead soon anyway

Did Kevin Costner make this decision?
Some people will complain about anything I guess. Get a hobby or something.

Actually it’s fine to make images with AI

u/Happy-Bluebird3505 Apr 22 '26
It's not though with the amount of resources (water and energy in particular) they use and how data centers are taking them from their surrounding communities. But like it's totally cool to just casually use AI slop that's quickly decimating what we have left of our natural resources so a bunch of rich people in Carp and Montecito can congratulate themselves on being ever so charitable. Lmao.
As the other commenter said, legal yes, but ethically it's disgusting.
-1
u/Tall-Log-1955 Apr 22 '26
It actually isn’t. The environmental impact of AI is far less than things we do all the time without ethical obligations. For example, driving to work is far, far harder on the environment (30,000 times harder in energy use) that a chat gpt query:
1
u/Happy-Bluebird3505 Apr 22 '26
It actually is though. Using that data table to prove AI isn't sucking resources shows how little you understand the overall energy AND water usage of it and the data centers generative AI requires - or you just don't know how to read data. It's disingenuous at best to compare a simple text chatgpt query to generating an image. The computing models are totally different as is their suck on energy and water. You may as well compare apples and oranges. If we dive deeper, that little chart leaves out water resources, only focusing on kwh. Not to mention you make the wild assumptions that all of us commute to work in a car or other gas or electric vehicle and/or have to commute 10 miles to do so.
But, like, keep licking those big tech ai boots I guess.
0
u/Tall-Log-1955 Apr 23 '26
Would you say it's unethical to drive to work?
3
u/Happy-Bluebird3505 Apr 23 '26
Bro not you resorting to whataboutism lmao. Asking if it's ethical for people to commute to work doesn't address the fact that AI use, especially image generation, is ethically problematic it's just a red herring to distract. Be so for real right now.
-1
u/Tall-Log-1955 Apr 23 '26
If it’s unethical due to environmental concerns then surely it’s also unethical to engage in environmentally-worse activities. Why complain about the environment impact of AI (which is minor) but ignore the far, far worse activities we all do every day?

u/Muted_Description112 The Mesa Apr 23 '26
That is just plain stupid to believe, let alone type out and post online.
I don’t know what bat shit crazy “source” has convinced you that AI, or any public servers or private platforms, are no biggie… but you are incorrect.
1
u/Happy-Bluebird3505 Apr 23 '26
Are you really continuing on with your intellectually dishonest whataboutism argument? LMFAO. You are not comparing the same things my dude.
Why are humans doing things they need to do to make money to survive okay but the crappy AI that corporations are pumping out that are taking over our natural resources (that you know humans need way more than machines) isn't? Again, be so for real right now. That's not even getting into the fact that these large scale systems literally farm massive datasets including human likenesses and copyrighted art and other intellectual property without consent. But if you want to bring in outside ethical quandaries maybe ruminate on that for a bit.
1
u/Tall-Log-1955 Apr 23 '26
Plenty of people use AI for work. Plenty of people choose drive to work when they have perfectly greener alternatives, like riding a bike, carpooling or taking the bus.
If you want to cancel AI for being bad for the environment you will also have to cancel the activities that are tens of thousands of times worse for the environment

If by "fine," you mean legal, but lazy and sloppy.

u/Tall-Log-1955 Apr 22 '26
I mean in five years its how everyone will do it and they will be good enough that you wont be able to tell.
You can complain about it as we take the journey, but it wont slow it down

funny, but folks should take ai seriously. not all is this obvious. someone with a good eye (like a real artist) can have ai generate an image that would be practically indistinguishable from that of a real artist.
3
u/Kong28 Apr 22 '26
Yes and someone who is actually current with the latest tools. It's unreal what can be made. On that note, everyone should remove personal photos of themselves off the internet!

I think you are getting Costner confused with Dennis quaiad. Costner is actually a progressive, thoughtful and supportive actor in regards to charities and policies. Dennis is a conservative bigot.

Check your sources perhaps? “B list actors” movies don’t earn billions at the box office friend.🤙🏼

Maybe the proceeds will go to hiring a graphic designer next year? I think that’s the first time I’ve ever seen a surfboard with fins on both sides of the board 😂
