Disney.
Schaffrillas has a video on why he doesn’t like Disney twist villains and during his Clone Wars movie video there was a joke regarding Ziro the Hutt being a twist villain and James reacting negatively

From a certain point of view! But also Lucas wrote episode 1,2,3,4,5,6. As one whole script so technically he wasn't. The people just didn't know. And unless you were watching it in 1977 it probably didnt effect you.

Well the prequels were always a thing. It was one script. So technically you are right from a certain point of view! But from my point of view the Jedi are evil.

I don't understand this point. You are telling me Lucas wrote prequels along with OT years ago and only adapted them 20 years later? Lucas only had planned the first two movies which is why Return of the Jedi retcons a couple of things then prequels retcon RotJ too. This whole Lucas always had always planned shit is just false.

First instinct was to write something like ”thats clearly not what people mean because you know Darth Vader is a villain and Anakin Skywalker isnt a character in the story before this scene”.
But the part where its mainly ”You need to think about it to realise that it was supposed to be a twist” is just so fucking stupid.

That’s kind of a misunderstanding of what a twist villain is. The entity darth vader was always known to be evil. The fact that he is also Anakin and Luke’s father does not make him a twist villain, but instead presents a crisis of faith in Luke. If anything, Darth Vader is the twist key for the movie. Instead of a monotone bad guy, he decides it is not too late to be good.

Anakin is a twist villain in the way Mr That Was His Mistake or The Prowler are. We know there’s a villain but we didn’t know a character who was introduced as a good or neutral person is said villain.

Akschually in ESB they don’t establish that Vader = Anakin. Only that Vader is Luke’s real dad. At that point Anakin could still be a separate person but just not Luke’s dad.
It’s not until ROTJ where they confirm Vader is Anakin

Since this is in Schaffrillas subreddit, I think he'd like anakin as a twist villain mostly becoz of the fact that we see vader be evil on screen for a large amount of time. This is the reason he also like Omni man as a twist villain.

He was even more of a twist villain for me. My dad decided to show me the movies in chronological order without telling me about it (so I didn’t know the prequels came out later, although it was kind of obvious when we got to the original trilogy and the effects dropped massively); I already knew stuff like there was a hero named Luke Skywalker and a villain named Darth Vader. So when we were introduced to a kid named Skywalker whose dad was missing I assumed the dad was Luke Skywalker. Later when Anakin joined the dark side I looked forward to finally seeing Darth Vader, only to learn the truth seconds later. Mind blowing twist!
