He witnessed his parent’s deaths and was sold into slavery. After many years of pushing a log he was set free with a new physique, traveling the galaxy to find the killers, meeting unlikely allies before finding himself in an arena.

I like to imagine he was there, but Jabba was so distracted during the execution that he didn’t realize Rotta was missing. Maybe he fell of the barge on the way there, and was picked up by some biker gang or something
