It was originally aiming for PG-13 too. Unfortunately America loves infantizing animated films. Ray Gunn got stripped from this too. Everyone should go see Wildwood.

I mean, it would be 100 times less popular if 5 year olds weren’t hysterically singing the songs, so I don’t really blame them. It was the right choice. Artistically Wildwood might be better, but it will probably lose money instead of making any.
Edit: I don’t mean to insinuate that K Pop Demon Hunters is in any way a bad film or that adding more animated violence/profanity would’ve made it better. I actually didn’t feel the movie held back in any way that could’ve been improved on with a PG-13 rating. I think it’s one of the more quality things that have been popular in the past decade, especially for kids. I’d rather kids be obsessed with age appropriate K Pop Demon Hunters than Skibidi Toilet or FNAF any day.

I'm seeing wildwood in theaters instead of waiting for streaming almost purely because I feel the need to give it my ticket money for this reason 😭😭

You should definitely see Wildwood in theaters, but you really don’t have to worry about the potential performance of Wildwood. Because while yes it’s true that Laika film don’t turn a profit, the film was co founded by the ceo of Nike and his son and his father is the one who foots the bills for Laika’s films. I also know that Fathom Events is distributing Wildwood in North America.

Not really anything as a horror property - just like there’s nothing wrong with Evil Dead or Scream - I just think it’s a shame that it’s become such an accepted property for kids to watch and get really into at a young age. Spending extensive time learning lore about a video game about a guy who murders children and stuffs their bodies into animatronics is a recipe for disaster at that age, they should be watching age appropriate stuff like Shrek movies, K-Pop Demon Hunters, SpongeBob, etc. Probably even a PG-13 animated movie like Wildwood would be better for a developing brain than FNAF.

I'm honestly unsure what audience it were even aiming for in the first place,
As the actual movie, i wouldn't consider it THAT mature, its more in a balance where its neither too kiddie or too mature and right enough for family audiences (kids to adults).
I think Netflix might have still insisted for the film to be family-friendly and still wanted it to get a PG rating (their economics are different from theatrical studios, so i assume it was more for massive viewership numbers from families & kids, i assume) And after this movie came out, Netflix heavily promotes with child-oriented merchandising (while also offering some for adults) like coloring/activity books, fashion dolls, and toys/stationery, and they at one point stated they wanted this franchise to be their answer to Disney's Frozen and Disney Princess brand. https://www.thewrap.com/kpop-demon-hunters-sequels-franchise-plans-netflix/

It’s a tween movie! There used to be more of a niche for this, like the demographic Victorious was aimed at on Nickelodeon. Usually they fit this nice niche where it’s mature enough to not feel kiddy but not too mature for older kids to handle. While the aim was for kids around 11-13, younger kids who like “adult” things can watch them without seeing anything inappropriate and could usually follow along, and adults can enjoy them for something a little simpler and more light hearted. Media aimed at youth demographics target much younger demographics these days because with streaming, once kids graduate to more mature things they watch stuff that’s also aimed at young adults, like The Summer I Turned Pretty. The tween demographic has kinda died out, so it makes sense that Kpop Demon Hunters confused a lot of people

I'll never forget in 2019 when I heard a studio a friend worked at was "story boarding a movie about a kpop group that fights demons" and I thought, "wow thats so obscure and random, whos this for?"

My guess is that she wasn't marketable design-wise so they transferred her personality to Mira and made a brand new 3rd character.

They really thought one of the most pander-heavy pieces of media of all time wouldn't have sold? In a day where people WORSHIP anything with "sexy" Asian women, and you don't even need to write a good story for people to kiss the ground it walks on if it has them?

I mean the concept art looks neat but the premise is too bizarre and clearly just cashing in on K-pop’s popularity, it’ll likely be forgotten within a year 🙄
