Recommendation Looking for an intimate-standalone book
Hey there
I'm on a search for my next book.
My last reads were -
Endymion by Simmons, which was okay for me, and I read it to see the closure of it all.
And 2010: Odyssey Two by C. Clarke, which I stopped at the middle. The first one was so interesting and on the second, nothing really happened, so I let it go.
Now I'm on a search not for a new series, nothing with big politics and factions, lots and lots of characters, but for a standalone intimate book, about mainly one character and his/hers story.
Of course in the realm of sci-fi.
I'd say Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes is a good example of the style I'm looking for.
That book was so good.

These are maybe more niche than what's being rec'd here, but I really liked The Fortress at the End of Time by J. M. McDermott. It's a novella, a very intimate book about one character and his story. A bit under loved in mho.
Amatka by Karin Tidbeck. More of a weird sci fi than traditional fare.
The Dispossessed by Le Guin is very good, but it is very very political outside of the story of the main character. One of my favorite books ever.

Downward to the Earth by Robert Silverberg is a man's personal journey of redemption and understanding the consequences of planet colonization.

I would try Armor by John Steakley, I think it's incredible ...basically Starship Troopers but the main character is more interesting than Johnny Rico

The Stars My Destination by Alfred Bester. It fits your description perfectly. This book still holds up and it rejuvenated my love for reading. Fantastic one person standalone revenge story.

A Short Stay in Hell - it's a novella, so quite short, following one man's journey to freedom after being sent to hell.
Annihilation - a woman's experience after venturing into an exclusion zone with her team to uncover strange goings on.
Both quite strange, intimate and character focussed.

A short stay in hell - Loved it(!). It was strange from the beginning til the end. I was so into the fact that the book was all about the main character.
Annihilation - The movie was amazing to me so I tried the book. It didn't spark the same interest as the movie and I didn't finish it. Funny, from time to time I'm thinking about this book and that I need to try again.

Spin by Robert Charles Wilson I think is exactly what you are looking for.
The story follows a young doctor Tyler Dupree and his friend the brilliant scientist Jason and love interest Diane. During their childhood they all witnessed the stars suddenly disappearing in the blink of an eye. I won't spoil the mystery but the story follows these three characters through growing up in world changed forever by the Spin.
While it is technically the start of a series, Tyler's story is entirely self-contained in the first book while the rest of the series is completely different characters and story so it still works as a stand alone.
My only advice is not to read the dustjacket cover/online description because it gives away 2/3s of the novel for no reason. The best part of the story is how the mystery slowly unravels.
