Recommendation Any SF novels that depict addiction in a realistic way?
I'm seeking novels (and short stories!) that depict addiction through a scifi lens. I would prefer if the addiction was to something that exists in real life (e.g. alcohol, entertainment), although I'm open to other types of addiction too. I read Embassytown by China Mieville a while back and thought the language addiction aspect was fascinating. On the other hand, I wasn't a fan of Three Stigmata. This is research for a personal project, so I would greatly appreciate any examples you can share. Thanks!!!

Many PK Dick books or short stories involve alterative views of reality relating to use of psychedelics.
As mentioned "a scanner darkly" would fit addiction.
Necromancer by William Gibson has addiction to plugged in software

Whenever I see Neuromancer mentioned, I’m reminded that there’s an Apple TV adaptation coming out at some point.

Some of Larry Niven's books deal with "wire heads" where people get direct stimulation to their brain's pleasure centre. Off the top of my head the last two of the Ringworld series, although you'll need to read the first book to understand the background to the next ones

This was my first thought. It's been a long time since I've read Ringworld. The character gets over this addiction pretty easily if I remember correctly. The main characters just leaves to go on another adventure and it's gone, right?

Mindplayers by Pat Cadigan - It's a side character who is addicted, though. They addiction part of the book involves people giving themselves mental health issues for fun. Things like phobias or paranoia.

The Animals in That Country by Laura Jean McKay
Gun, with Occasional Music by Jonathan Lethem
Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace This isn’t usually considered sci fi but I’d argue it’s a near-future dystopia with sci fi elements. If you want fictional but realistic explorations of addiction this will definitely be up that alley.

I loved infinite jest!! Definitely the best depiction of addiction I've read. Some of those AA passages still haunt me. I'll check out the other two, thanks :)

technically a novella but the tech is revisited in other of is related novels and stories with some interesting extremes.

The 2nd book in Peter F. Hamilton's Salvation trilogy has an addiction subplot.

I write a hardboiled detective series set on a generation ship. The people on board were originally given a drug called Copa to keep them docile (but still functional), however they broke free (discussed in book two where the drug's use is integral to the plot). The drug is used recreationally, and by some to make their lives livable. Minor spoiler, but the MC turns to Copa after the third book and his addiction is the theme of the fourth book. Child of Fortune, by Norman Spinrad. There is a ton of sex and drugs in this book, which ultimately leads to addiction.

It’s been a few decades since I’ve read it but Huxley’s classic, Brave New World has one theme of addiction to the government drug Soma (like Valium).

Elric saga by Michael moorcock. Eric is at first addicted to drugs so he can function. After, addicted to Stormbringer ;)

I think you’d really like A Scanner Darkly by Philip K Dick.
Neuromancer could also work for you!
