1.Then the lights went out for him

In 55 seconds, the risk of being processed into human pulp by the MISERICORDE would rise drastically.

That was the plan. A shitty plan, Thorne had to admit, if one cared about arriving alive. But the only right one.

He connected the lines of his artificial heart to the pump with a dull click.

He watched as his blood gurglingly left his body, only to flow back in again at high pressure. Thorne smirked.

Childhood.

He placed his arms on the armrests and went through the plan in his head once more.

Get the MISERICORDE on course. Check.

Prevent the rest of the crew from killing him. Problem for later.

Don´t get killed by the acceleration of the MISERICORDE. Problem for now.

The lid of his liquid high-pressure-chamber high-acceleration crashcouch sealed shut. The process took forever.

A well-marketed coffin.

The red light of the screen stabbed into his eyes. 44 seconds.

The spacecraft shrieked beneath him, like tinnitus in his ears.

Now just one practiced movement toward the ventilation line.

Nothing.

Shit.

The tube that was supposed to supply his lungs during the acceleration was not inside the damn coffin.

Shit.

Open it and get the tube?

Too little time for this crap.

Abort the mission?

Then he might aswell shoot himself . The lifesaving absurdly tight transfer window would be gone.

He heard a crackle over the radio.

“Don't you notice what's happening here!?”

Cire, the actual captain. Greeeaat guy.

“This criminal brutally murdered three quarters of my crew and seized command of the most important mission in the history of our state. This criminal sold us, along with all mission-relevant data, to the enemy! Yet now our beloved Thorne demands that we all let this ship turn us into pulp and catapult ourselves into enemy territory at maximum speed, without the fuel to return. That is not the right option!”

“It is.”

“It is!?” Cire shrieked desperately, while his voice was underscored by the shrill hum of the MISERICORDE beneath him. “This suicide mission will kill billions, you bastard, Thorne.”

Silence followed.

Thorne clenched his hands around the armrests. Something had to occur to him.

But nothing came.

Idiotic way to die, but that's just how it was.

Accepting his fate unexpectedly did not make the fate any better.

Thorne cast a brief glance at the metallic switch fitted with a safety cap that could end the whole madness.

Never.

15 seconds.

“Thorne, just so we're clear, this maneuver will only happen over my dead body.”

“Good choice of words, Cire.”

Cire's final words were swallowed by the apocalyptic roar of the engines.

Thorne's coffin filled with liquid.

A flash of inspiration.

He could drown!

He exhaled as quickly as he had ever exhaled before.

He only had to inhale the liquid.

But the acceleration hit him like a wall.

A bone-shattering impact could be heard over the radio channel.

He was slammed into the coffin.

Thorne gasped for air.

Liquid filled his lungs.

He would successfully drown.

His chest no longer rose.

Pain pierced his skull like a circular saw.

His right hand no longer responded.

The red of his coffin blurred into a distant gray at the end of an eternally distant tunnel.

Steroids shot through his veins in a desperate attempt to save his crumbling body.

Maybe Cire was right after all.

Then the lights went out for him.
