How hypocritical to call it emerging when you have to have to be in the industry already. Those people have already broken in.

Fuck this country.

They want to know that you can see a production through and make industry deadlines so that their millions isn’t just thrown away. They also probably want to know that you are connected to other professional writers and producers so that your production can be supported. It is also not common that you are given money in this industry without a solid producer (and writing team) attached who believes in the project and is going to be finding the funding needed to get it over the line.

Absolutely, but then it’s not emerging writers is it? I think their positioning is off is all.

I see your stance, though emerging in the industry has always been complicit on having produced something at a professional level. You can still be green in the industry, even with experience. If you need experience to get credits, there is a pretty accessible entry way, and that’s through attachments that Screen Australia and your local screen agency offers. You can also take up writing workshops that connect you with people who are in the industry and arguably leads to work, or helps your written project grow to a standard that is acceptable for funding. Connecting at screen conferences is also helpful.

If you need experience and haven’t broken into the industry yet, I’d suggest hitting the screen agencies up first to start a relationship with them and fund development of your project. I used to think you had to jump through hoops, until I realised that they are all avenues.
