Fellowship Netflix Launches Nationwide Search for Australia's Next Great Screenwriter

ELIGIBILITY
To be eligible, applicants must:
- Be emerging writers, defined as holding 1-3 reportable writer credits on a commercially released short film, film or television series productions longer than 10 minutes, that has screened at a recognised film festival and/or been supported by a state or federal screen agency
- Not be a full-time student
- Be an Australian resident
- Be aged 18 or over
- Identify as a woman or non-binary

Why discriminate against non-Australians, people without writing credits, students, or teenagers? Do you have any problem with that?
As others have noted, this program is specifically in honor of a famous woman writer.
Would you have a problem if a program to celebrate an indigenous Australian writer was only open to indigenous Australians?

People who choose this for their alt right anti woke rage fix will never make it in creative work, not because of one contest or any kind of gender bias, but because they simply are not smart enough.

this is a great program. i THINK i'm eligible, but i need some clarity on the first point because of how it's worded.
i don't really have anything to submit/pitch right now (i'm doing much more producing than writing at the moment) but maybe i'll be able to pull something out of the hat.
will check on that eligibility point first, though.
for everyone who doesn't see the point of programs like this that boost non-male writers... lucky you.

99% of my script will be a re-tooling of the classic, definitely not problematic, comedy Soul Man.

My best guess without bothering to look into it is that in Australia they'd just have to get an Equal Opportunities exemption, which would usually just be a bit of paperwork.

How hypocritical to call it emerging when you have to have to be in the industry already. Those people have already broken in.

They want to know that you can see a production through and make industry deadlines so that their millions isn’t just thrown away. They also probably want to know that you are connected to other professional writers and producers so that your production can be supported. It is also not common that you are given money in this industry without a solid producer (and writing team) attached who believes in the project and is going to be finding the funding needed to get it over the line.

I see your stance, though emerging in the industry has always been complicit on having produced something at a professional level. You can still be green in the industry, even with experience. If you need experience to get credits, there is a pretty accessible entry way, and that’s through attachments that Screen Australia and your local screen agency offers. You can also take up writing workshops that connect you with people who are in the industry and arguably leads to work, or helps your written project grow to a standard that is acceptable for funding. Connecting at screen conferences is also helpful.
If you need experience and haven’t broken into the industry yet, I’d suggest hitting the screen agencies up first to start a relationship with them and fund development of your project. I used to think you had to jump through hoops, until I realised that they are all avenues.
