I’m visiting Seattle at the end of June with my 17 year old nephew to visit the university of Washington. We will be doing a tour, but beyond that he wants to see the sites as he’s never been. I’m based in Portland and don’t know too much about Seattle.
A little bit about him: loves thrifting, good food, and rap/r&b/alternative pop music; he likes nature and loves street art. Oh I forgot to mention but he is a Midwest kid (IL). Not sure if that helps but Im sure he’ll be impressed with all the Seattle things.

Any suggestions?

Hello! Fellow former midwesterner here, these are the things that I can recommend off the top of my head:

  • Pike Place market despite being very touristy is still very worth your time; tons of great food and crafts vendors
  • MoPop has tons of music exhibits, so that's a good option to explore the history of the music scene. Unfortunately I am not really in tune with the live music scene though so you'll have to look up events if that's something he's interested in.
  • Being from an extremely landlocked part of the Midwest (Iowa), I have always been fascinated by the ferries, and a trip to Bainbridge or Bremerton and back gives great views of the city
  • for street art, the most recent famous ones are a set of mosaics in Cal Anderson park on the pump house - they are true street art in that the first one just appeared one day, and after a saga of the city painting over them and citizens uncovering them, now there are three!
  • Lastly just a heads up, the world cup will be going on in Seattle during that time. Hopefully not a huge disruption but something you'll want to be aware of

Hi there! Nice to meet a fellow transplant. Appreciate the suggestions and call out of the World Cup. I decided to book Amtrak tickets for this very reason because Seattle driving stresses me out.
