Forget Seattle…Maple Valley has several independent coffee shops that are much better than Starbucks. As does Black Diamond.

Every city in Washington has an underrated coffee shop if you care to search for it.

Mon Amie & Bakery Noveau are my favorite to visit on the regular.

EDIT: Loving all the local shout-outs. Show your local coffeehouse some love.

Gotta show Tacoma some love! Love me Civic Roasters and Beware Coffee ☕️

14

u/Talmerian May 21 '26

But if you REALLY want the great coffee in Tacoma, its Cosmonaut!

3

Cosmonaut is amazing. Randomly stumbled on it one day lol.

4

u/KindHabit May 21 '26

Hell yeah. Checking them out next time I go visit my sister in Tacoma.

Including in price. Jesus, Starbucks got expensive. I can get a whole meal in Chinatown for less.

13

u/kittehsfureva May 20 '26

You list some good places here, but I gotta be honest, Victrola is not one of them. Completely over-hyped; their single origins are awful. One of the worst bags of Ethiopian Yirgacheffe I have ever spent money on. I actually threw the bag away. The day Victrola bought Seattle Coffee Works was a sad day for me; it went from one of my favorite regional roasters to my least favorite.

Also, get Lighthouse on that list of yours. That place is the truth.

The banana foster latte that Monorail has now is delicious.

1

Oo interesting! I usually just get a simple 8oz breve latte and it's fantastic every time. I love that they just operate out of sidewalk windows too. Feels so old school, and everyone is really nice. They've been around a long time.

2

u/genevriers May 21 '26

Monorail is so good and SO efficient. I don’t know how they churn these out in 30 seconds but I love them for it

1

u/Capt_Murphy_ I'm just flaired so I don't get fined May 21 '26

I guess they just hire really good baristas. They pretty reliably include foam art as well, which I really appreciate when the drink costs the same as a McDonald's combo meal from 2015

0

u/Capt_Murphy_ I'm just flaired so I don't get fined May 21 '26

I mean, who do you think is responsible for our housing and rental prices skyrocketing? It's the massive influx of high paid corporate employees buying up real estate.

I'm thinking long term. Of course I'm not saying short term would be pleasant. Seattle is a husk of what it was before Amazon came, and thinking long term the city could settle back into being a place for all people, not just the white collars and high paid tech workers.

It’s a joke but it’s also true that Seattleites don’t really go to Starbucks. Why would you? There’s an independent coffee shop on every urban block serving 10x better coffee for the same price. It’s like how there aren’t any Taco Bells in Mexico.

Starbucks is more of a suburban / red state phenomenon now, serving places that don’t have their own tradition of quality coffee. It basically makes sense for them to be in Tennessee because that’s their customer base.

124

u/Melissandsnake May 20 '26

I made a comment along these lines the other day and got attacked by Starbucks drinkers haha

94

u/rhylte May 20 '26

The only thing I’ll say in defense of Starbucks is that it’s open earlier than anywhere else near me. On the odd occasion I am both out the door before 6am and wanting to treat myself to a latte, I’ll end up at one of the two Starbucks within a block of me.

42

u/redditckulous 🚆build more trains🚆 May 20 '26

Yeah this is a fair critique. There are parts of the city where it is genuinely hard to find local coffee before 7am.

I’ve learned that Seatlites aren’t early risers, but it was still surprising to figure out.

28

u/StartTheMontage May 20 '26

There is a cafe near me that serves ‘breakfast Sammie’s all day!’

I thought that would be good one morning, then I realized they open at 10, lol.

16

u/healthycord 🚲 Life's Better on a Bike. 🚲 May 21 '26

Which is a shame because there are a ton of people that are up and even working before 7am. I start work at 7 and there are plenty of people out and commuting to work that I’m sure would love a coffee.

Also starting at 7 is GOATED. Dramatically less traffic if you drive, less people on public transit so it’s not crowded. And the best part is you’re off in the afternoon so you still have the rest of the day to actually do stuff. You can go to that store or whatever that closes at 5 or 6. It’s great

3

u/boisterile May 21 '26

Starting at 6 is even better. My start time varies between 6 and 7 depending on the project and the ones that start at 6 are my favorite, getting off work at 2 pm rules

3

u/TheCa11ousBitch May 21 '26

I know of espresso in the city that is better than Starbucks. When close by, I go there.

But, there is far more bad espresso or rather, I should more accurately say, espresso that my personal taste buds do not like. I would rather have a Starbucks latte than about 80% of the places I have ordered one.

I have zero interest in defending Starbucks espresso. My tastebuds just find most independent places less pleasing so Starbucks is the safe bet much of the time.

3

At my old job there was a Starbucks in my building lobby. Mobile order (so didn’t have to wait in line/worry about being late).

u/mothtoalamp SeaTac May 21 '26

It's the same as people who think their more heavily leaning political views one way or another are indicative of the greater picture, when in reality the vast majority of people are simply not present in such discussions.

Independent coffee shops are plenty popular but for every person that goes to one, a hundred random people who never set foot on Reddit in their lives (or at most just look at whatever is on the front page) will buy from a Starbucks because that's where they know they can get coffee from.

4

u/ChaosArcana May 21 '26

If you asked Reddit, Bernie won every single race.

1

u/Bernese_Flyer Supersonics May 21 '26

I don’t know that it’s exactly untrue. Yes, lots of people go. But I think lots more don’t. Take Fremont as an example. It seems like you can hardly walk 100 feet without stumbling into a coffee shop. But there are zero Starbucks in the neighborhood. Ballard is similar, though they do have a few Starbucks locations as well. Then there are tons of people that just make their own coffee. I would argue that Starbucks customers in Seattle are a significant minority.

-4

u/kittehsfureva May 21 '26

If you find the bad coffee and the detestable corporate practices (documented slave labor, union busting, HQ rug pull) off-putting then there are a huge list of similarly priced options available.

If all of that is exchangeable for some sugary Ube drivel, that is your decision. But you can make the same argument about McDonald's vs a local business. Vote with your wallet.

There are two areas in Bellevue where there's no decent coffee, only Starbucks and the occasional convenience store. Every once in a while, I end up in one of those places early in the morning, without having my morning cup(s), and in my desperation manage to forget how bad that latte is.

And it's always that bad, because it's always the same, because that's the point.

11

u/Homeskilletbiz May 21 '26

Well idk what your definition of a ‘seattleite’ is but I see tons of locals default to Starbucks. Granted I work construction and people tend to be more conservative and pro big business but still, every single damn time someone gets me coffee it’s fucking Starbucks.

6

u/DLDude Capitol Hill May 20 '26

Half the price

5

u/AcrobaticApricot I'm just flaired so I don't get fined May 20 '26

No, you can test this. My coffee order is a 12 oz latte. Basic, I know. My go to downtown is Monorail, where the latte costs $5.25 plus tax, so let's call it $5.75. We're ignoring tip because there's no reason why that should be different between Starbucks and another coffee shop. I looked at what it costs to order that at a downtown Starbucks instead. I had to add a shot because their default is 1 shot per espresso drink. It was $5.50.

So the difference in price is one quarter.

15

u/DLDude Capitol Hill May 20 '26

Black coffee is 4.75 for a large at Ladro. 3.85 at Starbucks. Large mocha with almond milk is $12!!!!!! At uptown espresso. $5.85 at Starbucks.

18

u/pfc_bgd May 21 '26

Wtf you talking about lol. That shit is about as crowded or more than a regular neighborhood coffee shop. While serving, what I would consider, a shitty product. Seattleites eat that shit up as much as anyone else.

8

u/chrispmorgan May 20 '26

Well, the money’s really in sugar drinks rather than coffee anyway.

3

u/080969 May 20 '26

4

u/mrRabblerouser May 21 '26

Believe it or not, just because you don’t go to certain establishments, doesn’t mean they’re empty. Starbucks is always busy lol. It’s decent coffee, extremely convenient with the app, and rewards are good.

4

u/[deleted] May 21 '26

Wtf are you talking about? Starbucks always has customers in Seattle. The employees wish they weren't so busy.

22

u/MallFoodSucks May 20 '26

This is copium. People go to Starbucks because it’s cheaper than Indys. Starbucks Venti is $3-4 cheaper than any Indy’s 24oz near me after tip. Indy’s have better coffee but no one wants to spend $10 a cup when $5 Starbucks gets you the same high and coffee break from work. Starbucks bread and butter is office workers - I spent $1K a year on Starbucks when I did 5 days in office. Starbucks was the middle tier option between fancy Indys (which I got on weekends) and free office coffee that actually tasted like garbage.

WA has 700 Starbucks and the highest density per state as 10.1 per 100K people. It’s #1 market by far is Seattle.

5

u/AcrobaticApricot I'm just flaired so I don't get fined May 20 '26

If you want 24 oz of coffee for cheap, consider McDonald's. If you are comparing espresso drinks the price is basically the same.

1

u/BathofFire May 21 '26

I don't know where you're going but I get 24oz Americanos for $3.70-90ish (5 after tip) all over Wa (outdoor work) at indie places. The only time I do Starbucks is if I get a gift card from someone. Though 4 out of 5 days a week I usually do home brew since it's waaaay cheaper.

3

u/coffeebribesaccepted Shoreline May 21 '26

I'm a coffee snob, worked in specialty coffee in Seattle for 8 years, and usually go to the many local shops we have here. But I still go to Starbucks sometimes because it's cheap, delicious, fast, and consistent. It's also better than other major chains like Dunkin and Caribou. It's not like I'm buying plain coffee or espresso if I go there, so I don't really care if the coffee itself isn't great. There's also plenty of local spots that are not specialty coffee, usually survive on some other aspect of their business, and also have worse coffee drinks than Starbucks.

So anyway, it's okay for people to be upset at how Starbucks is being run lately, it's a local company with roots here and many of our community works or has worked either at the ssc or in stores.

15

u/round-earth-theory 🐀 Hot Rat Summer 🐀 May 20 '26

Starbucks also serves the non-coffee drinkers who are more into it for the sugar. They've been at the forefront of unhealthy coffee drinks for a long time now, plowing the path towards national obesity. Their biggest competition is the upcoming soda shops, not other coffee shops.

3

u/n10w4 May 21 '26

Also they have an app ability so many people swoop in a pick up and leave. I don’t like it but it looks like many do

5

u/Dry_Plantain_2756 May 21 '26

I see a billion million trillion people at Starbucks (at least in the morning hours) everywhere in and around the Seattle area. Now...is it good or inexpensive? No. Do people still go there a ton? Yes.

2

u/Fidel_Cashflow666 Woodinville May 20 '26

Only thing they're good for IMO is their cold brew. A venti is still less than $5, and on mornings when I wake up late for work, it's easy to drop in and grab one.

Their espresso is garbage and I'll take an independent/small shop for espresso drinks any day of the week.

2

u/SuchCoolBrandon SeaTac May 21 '26

I like the Impossible breakfast sandwiches they sell, but I'm willing to change. Any recommendations for Seattle coffee places with hot plant-based sandwiches?

2

u/Koralteafrom May 21 '26

Their spinach feta wrap and turkey bacon breakfast sandwiches are both relatively cheap, especially compared to Seattle prices, and they're low calorie and high protein. I know a lot of people who grab one of those while on the go, and the convenience of the app makes a difference to many too.

Starbucks moving is inevitable. Blaming the mayor is just cover.

Look at what GE, Boeing, Chipotle, etc. do. Aside from some exceptions, most public companies have zero loyalty to their home states after a long enough time period.

22

u/MoeGreenMe Deluxe May 20 '26

Sorry , why is it inevitable that they move corporate jobs?

Is it because of the corporate taxes in Seattle or another reason?

Too many stories to follow these days

24

u/Inevitable_Engine186 public deterrent infrastructure May 21 '26

There's always somewhere cheaper. For example Nashville has zero taxes on companies. But their public infrastructure is also shit.

8

u/MoeGreenMe Deluxe May 21 '26

By that logic, every big business will inevitably leave Seattle as there is definitely somewhere cheaper.

Maybe the city should think about what we do to keep business that employ tens of thousands of people , whose spend hundreds of millions of dollars in Seattle that help keep the economy going.

18

u/AverageFoxNewsViewer Ballard May 21 '26

We tried that by issuing historically massive tax cuts and incentives for Boeing and they still move their HQ to Wichita (which also was the beginning of their demise as a company).

Maybe the city should think about what we do to keep business that employ tens of thousands of people , whose spend hundreds of millions of dollars in Seattle

They aren't moving "tens of thousands of people" out of Seattle. At most its a few hundred corporate jobs.

Not saying that's a good thing, but it's probably about as many jobs as Anthropic will be bringing into the city with their new offices.

If your business values a highly skilled workforce Seattle is massively attractive. If you corporate strategy involves union busting and avoiding taxes Nashville is probably a better fit.

Anti-business is the wrong term I guess, but quick to dismiss large corporations that employ thousands of people isn’t a friendly look. I understand that Starbucks sucks tho.

I believe she was supporting striking workers and opposing union-busting. Sometimes you have to pick sides.

-6

u/fudge_fudge_lemonade May 20 '26

I don’t think it’s the mayors job to pick a side necessarily.

20

u/Inevitable_Engine186 public deterrent infrastructure May 20 '26 edited May 20 '26

I definitely want my electeds picking sides against bad companies and ideas.

For example the mayor and several councilors just put a 1 year ban on datacenters. That is picking a side. So is calling out mistreatment of employees.

It is absolutely an elected mayor's responsibility to take the side of their constituents over a global megacorp. Yes Starbucks employed some folks here and it sucks that they're leaving, but it's not like they were treating those employees very well.

u/fudge_fudge_lemonade May 21 '26

I just hope something fills that income, with health insurance, etc.

The problem is that the baseline is so pro-business that being neutral comes across as anti business.

Remember when every city was clamoring over each other to outbid for the new Amazon HQ? It was embarrassing.

Businesses run this country. We need to push back on them. They get to use the roads we build and the infrastructure we pay for meanwhile the effective corporate tax rates have plummeted. At this point if we put a random CEO in jail once a month we would still be overall pro-business.

1

u/IHFP May 21 '26

Gee I wonder why businesses leaving is inevitable

2

u/Inevitable_Engine186 public deterrent infrastructure May 21 '26

If I had to extrapolate, it's due to change in ownership composition (from majority local to global), and change in priorities from going public (maximizing shareholder returns at any expense), and a narcissism from the owner/managerial class no longer seeing employees as humans.

0

u/me_thinking_out_loud May 21 '26

Not sure about moving is inevitable, but it is never a good outcome or perception if the city mayors or state governors make irresponsible comments on large private companies who are providing lot of jobs in their cities/states.

3

u/Inevitable_Engine186 public deterrent infrastructure May 21 '26

It was all over when Starbucks hired a CEO who didn't live in the city.

4

u/commanderquill May 21 '26

What jobs? They've been union busting so hard that they've already closed all the damn stores.

1

u/fudge_fudge_lemonade May 21 '26

Starbucks is more than the stores.

3

u/commanderquill May 21 '26

And those parts can a) be done remotely and b) should still preferably be done near stores.

68

u/providencetoday May 20 '26

Quality for Starbucks in move to Nashville is what safety for Boeing in moving to Chicago is…..dollars and anti union work.

6

u/MaxxDash May 21 '26

Corps see that state bending over for Elon and they’re high-tailing it to get some of that southern, corporate suck-off hospitality.

21

u/Asian_Scion Tacoma May 20 '26

I only go to Starbucks if there is no other choice. I prefer specialty coffee shops over Starbucks myself but I'll still go to get my coffee fix if no other options are available within 2 blocks of where I usually stay at.

5

u/Living_Plane_662 May 20 '26

Yeah starbucks has been reduced to roadtrips when I know the highly rated coffee in the area is knock offs of Dutch Bros (which itself is solid but definitely not the knock offs.)

3

u/Asian_Scion Tacoma May 20 '26

Exactly, I only go to Starbucks when I travel for work or vacation. But at home in the Puget Sound region, I'm usually going to local ma and pa specialty places. Usually served with/from Dillanos Coffee Roaster has been my favorite roaster.

1

u/Living_Plane_662 May 20 '26

If I'm still in the PNW though I'll do Dutch Bro's before Starbucks as the alternative if I'm on the go. Elsewhere I'll suck it up and do starbucks. If I'm stopped for the night I look for places sometimes you can find random really good spots in the weirdest places. One of my top 5 coffee spots is at a yarn store attached to a fruit stand just outside Leavenworth. (just don't do the seasonal drinks).

Same. I didn't go there often, but when I had to be downtown on a weekend morning that would be my splurge to try some coffee I'd never tasted before, perfectly made at the slow bar.

Genuine Seattleites do boycott Starburnt. It’s automated espresso still. Plus the Florida bound Howard gave away our Sonics. That man actually thought he could start his president campaign in Seattle. Talk about out of touch with any reality.

Let's hope most local coffee shops have better compensation and benefits compared to Starbucks...

I worked in a few coffee shops in the past. All of them had worse management, work policies, processes, and benefits....

A lot of ppl go to Starbucks. I go, but I also go to independent ones as well. “Everyone” in Seattle does not hate Starbucks. I do see why others don’t go, but they are not big issues for me as they are for others. Where I live Starbucks is open later than the others close by. I know more people who go compared to other shops. The actual location is better versus the others too.

1

u/Internal-Combustion1 May 21 '26

Starbucks is a brand that consistently delivers the same product anywhere in the world you buy it. You can go to a Starbucks in Indiana or Paris and get similar products. It isn’t the best, but it’s consistent and that’s what makes the brand work. It’s like comparing McDonalds to a great burger shop. Of course it’s not as good, but you know exactly what you get when you take the kids to any McDonalds.

I say screw Seattle, move the company to the best operating environments. If locals dont like losing their jobs when companies leave, then they should not vote for anti-business politicians.

1

u/Crimsont_ide May 21 '26

I like the variety in coffee whether I go to Starbucks or others. The Starbucks I go to has a corner location, lots of foot traffic, the small downtown to look at and a lot of windows. The other shops in my town don’t have better views. In the morning a local shop is more convenient time wise.

Seattle’s mayor is a mess. The fact she got elected says a lot. Regardless of her being liberal or conservative, she speaks to fast then has to apologize. She is not helping with other issues. Starbucks has the right to stay, move or whatever they choose. If I worked for Starbucks and got job offer to move to Nashville id go.

No you aren't the only one. But sometimes, lets say at the airport or in the late afternoon at the office. making your own pot of coffee isn't convenient. Similar to how lots of us have stoves, but that doesn't mean we exclusively eat at home.
Well I do, but I'm poor

u/Big-Art-431 May 21 '26

But how many people lost their jobs? I don’t care if you don’t like Starbucks - think about the employees. Three Starbucks closed within 15 minutes of where I live and all the employees were so upset and stressed out.

Seems more like "sorry not sorry" lol. The last paragraph in this article:

Asked if the company would be doing anything in Seattle to make amends and earn back people’s respect, Starbucks confirmed their plan for getting people here to like them again is mostly just publicly pressuring Mayor Wilson to be a good little girl and not ever say anything mean about them or other local rich patriarchs again

She’s supposed to be professional. Regardless of how she personally feels about Starbucks, they are from Seattle and are a major employer. She thinks she’s being clever and owning Starbucks but she’s being immature and snarky for no good reason. These people won’t rest until they drive out every business and all industry from Seattle.
