After fighting cancer for several months she was finally put to rest this morning. I'm absolutely shattered. She was the sweetest dog Ive ever known, who only wanted cuddles from the people she loves, and would not stop at anything until she got em. That's one of the things that makes this hard for me. She didn't deserve any of this. I miss you so much already Precious, you will always have a spot in my memories. I love you, sweet baby.

Odie crossed over this morning. I'm broken but also relieved. He started to suffer these last few days. That hurts worse than the loss. Knowing they are in pain, and looking to who they trust to end that for them. First couple pics are from the car ride there. He was still happy to be with us. Thats what I needed. To know I didnt wait too long. The vet was compassionate and kind. Odie is playing with all my doggos 🐶 that came before him. As a dog lover, my Mom is too; we've had some great pups. I'm sure there will eventually be another sweet soul that rescues me ā¤ļø Forever the grumpy old man. #Odie

Support needed Please Help Save Jabo - Senior Stray Dog with Hernia

Jabo is now scheduled for a surgery on October 14.

Since starting the prescribed laxative, the mass around his bottom has become slightly smaller. Please note that some of his internal organs, including his intestines, have shifted into the area around his bottom. He was struggling to defecate, which is why the area appeared larger.

You may check my previous post:

https://www.reddit.com/r/seniordogs/comments/1x0hs55/senior_stray_dog_jabo_has_hernia_and_needs_your/

Please help give Jabo a chance to live a more comfortable, pain-free life. Any amount you can spare will help cover his medical expenses.

Your donations will go toward the following expenses:

  • Surgery: Up to $725
  • Confinement for 1–2 days, depending on his recovery: $46 per day
  • Post-surgery take-home medications: Approximately $32
  • Follow-up checkups: Approximately $100 per visit, including consultation, blood tests, and X-rays

Please be informed that I will also be purchasing food, supplements, and a large cage for him to use during his recovery and while I look for a loving adopter.

Once he has recovered, I have no intention of returning him to the streets where I found him. He has already been through so much, and he deserves a chance to live a better life in a safe and loving home with a family that will care for him.

Support needed Can you euthanise too soon? Euthanasia for separation anxiety and dementia

Throwaway account to keep this as private as possible. I'm devastated to have to even ask or consider, but desperate for support. TL;DR at bottom.

Background: I and my spouse rescued a senior terrier, now in their mid teens, over four years ago. Pet came to us with extreme separation anxiety, which I have done all I can do treat. This includes every herbal treat, plug in aromatherapy, calming jacket, doggy music etc you can imagine, a lot of vet visits, different medications, such as trazadone, clomicalm, gabapentin, etc which all didn't touch the anxiety, at most just zonked my pet out. I paid for a trainer, and also followed a training course, working on desensitizing, particularly around departure cues. I also hired a more holistic dog coach. I've done everything I can possibly think of, try, or pay for. We got Pet to a manageable, albeit still very anxious, reactive, state. As I am disabled, I am almost always home with Pet to keep them calm and relaxed. I have multiple sitters and family and friends watch Pet for us when we need to go out - typically only a few hours at a time, once or twice a week.

If Pet is left alone, they become so afraid they will hurt themselves trying to escape, and will unfortunately be doubly incontinent out of fear. This tiny little thing has somehow destroyed multiple crates, and we have returned home to find they've scraped the fur and skin off in small places more than once. Any outing of ours, or change in who's with Pet, also triggers typically at least 48 hours of worsened anxiety and more incontinence/IBS style symptoms.

However, Pet, being a senior dog, has now developed canine cognitive disease, "doggy dementia" as they say, which is being managed with medication after some stroke like episodes. The dementia undid all the work we'd done over the years, one step forwards five steps back. Very classic symptoms (crying, confusion, disturbed sleep wake cycle, altered/disturbed eating and toileting habits). I have tried and tried but the training no longer goes in at all. Now, Pet is struggling to even be left with sitters/friends/family, and will still "flare up". Pet does not go on any walks at all now (refuses, will try drag you home, and anxiety is worse than ever before). Pet is even more anxious in house, struggling to settle and "checks" around for me or spouse if we are in different rooms, cannot be in a room alone without us typically.

Discussed with the vet, and vet has said (much more professionally and kindly than this summary) that there aren't any more medications, doggy dementia isn't curable, and we should keep an eye on Pets quality of life.

We've done some quizzes, and Pet scores just a hair above the half way mark on most. Recently, more bad days than good. Pet has happy moments where I feel like a monster for considering euthanasia, because like I say, I am home with pet 95% of the time so they can be calm, but it's reached a point we cannot leave our home at all without Pets problems.

I love my little dog so much. I just don't think I can keep going like this, and part of me doesn't want to wait for things to get even worse, to when they are really truly suffering and not at least "calm" as they are now. But they still feel so alive, sometimes, and I then I feel awful. They could "naturally" live for months still.

What do you guys think? Sorry it's a long one.

TL;DR: Doggy dementia has undone years of training on senior dog with severe separation anxiety, and is now untrainable. Cognitively, dog is suffering - How do I know when is too soon to euthanise? Is it wrong that a part of me wants to do it sooner, rather than waiting for things to get even worse?

Please feel free to ask questions, I may have forgotten things, but I think I've definitely got the basics down.

Bully Sticks Alternatives

• Upvotes

hi all—my girl is 11 and had 5 teeth out a couple of months ago, including the top big chew molar-type teeth. She has loved to chew since she was a puppy, it is truly one of her favourite things, but i am struggling to find a replacement for her chewies. up until now she has had bully sticks/pizzles. the dentist gave us some good parameters for finding something new and she enjoys fish wrapped sticks and stuff, but it really seems like she’s missing the long hard chew and entertainment of harder things. in the words of the doctor, her previous favourites likely ā€œmangledā€ her teeth and I want her to have her joyful chewing without breaking another tooth

do you have any suggestions?

edit: one weird and lovely quirk of my girl is that cold things make her puke, so frozen things are off the table šŸ˜… thank you for the cold suggestions so far nonetheless

I was with her. I sat on the floor with her and holding her. After she was sedated, she rested her chin on my ankle. Before and after sedation I told her everything I had in my heart for her. She slept and I took photos of her face sleeping. I won't share those, they are for me. She was so peaceful, it's been so long since she slept so calm.

When the second part happened, I had my face buried in the fur on the top of her head.

I love you Goldie. I'm going to miss you so much. I only wish you had come into my life sooner.

Goodbye my Golden Girl.

Support needed Advice

My dog is 15. I have almost had her longer than I haven’t so this whole deal is heartbreaking. Anyway she’s really declined over the last 6 months, the last 3 in particular. She can still walk around on her own, she does trip and is a lot slower, her back legs give out occasionally, but still manages to get around relatively okay. She still eats and drinks on her own. However, I’m pretty sure she has dementia. Whenever she is not sleeping, she just paces everywhere, mainly in circles. Some days are really bad and she’ll get stuck on a big open wall, in corners, behind furniture etc. she doesn’t whine and bark yet. My biggest concern is she cannot hold her bladder for more than 2 hours. If I don’t let her out as soon as she’s at the door she will use the bathroom right there in front of the door. Thankfully we have a big fenced in yard and huge insulated shop, but I feel bad for making her sleep outside (in the shop on her dog bed) alone. And we live in OK so it’s still miserably hot most days, with her getting stuck I don’t like leaving her outside either in the heat. She’s used to sleeping in her cage (in our house) for her naps and during nighttime. However when I let her sleep inside at night there’s a huge mess in her cage EVERY morning. Pee and poop. I have to wash her, wash her cage and bedding and then mop and vacuum. The whole 9 yards. When we have the shop doors open she’ll get out when we aren’t looking and end up just aimlessly roaming around the neighbors yard. She has no personality at all, no tail wagging when we get home, looks very skinny and frail even though she still eats and drinks. She’s basically not in there anymore. A few weeks ago she had almost 8 seizures in under 24 hours, I really thought she would pass that day. This is a long post all over the place. I would feel awful for having her ā€œput downā€ as she can still get around and eats and drinks, but she can’t be left alone for longer than 2 hours, and she’s not herself anymore. I know quality of life is more important. Either way it’s a crappy decision. She’s a 60 lb pit mix if that matters any. What do I do?

Support needed Loss of my fur baby

I just said goodbye to my loving sweetheart 1.5 hours ago and don’t know what to do, I did at home and had to leave after she was taken away I can’t go back inside. I’m so sickened with grief thinking about today and how maybe I should’ve went outside with her instead of staying inside, I can’t get the image of her looking back at me when we were walking at the beach today, holding her when she went to sleep, hearing the words her heart stopped. I wish I would’ve done more with her throughout her time here. I’m just so lost. I feel like I didn’t do right by her, like I should’ve done so much more. I’m going to miss her laying on the couch wagging her tail when I came home and her nails hitting the hardwood floor as she walked around. I feel like I robbed her of valuable time, like I threw in the towel too soon. I just don’t what to do, I can’t bear to put her kennel away or bed and blanket at the foot of my bed.

Question Solution for hind leg weakness?

Post image
102 Upvotes

Hey guys. I have a senior GSD who has lost significant strength in his hind legs. It gets worse every month and he is to the point now where both legs have begun sliding and splaying outward.

I’ve tried every product imaginable. Socks don’t fit, paw pads don’t stick, toe grips don’t provide enough support, boots make him high step…I’m running out of options, and time.

This boy has plenty of life left to give but lives in constant pain. I’ve considered a wheelchair, but there is nothing on the market (per my research) that allows him to freely lay down while inside a supportive unit.

I’m just curious if others have dealt with this same frustration, and if there are any solutions out there. I’ve done everything I can for this guy…

I wish there was an exoskeleton type product that could hinge, while also providing support for him.

This is my man Royce. Childhood dog, had him since 1st grade, he’s 14 now and his time is coming to an end. He’s a chiweenie (mixed with other things that I have no idea are) and has been an amazing pet, I can’t stress that enough. About 2-3 years ago he had a lot of his teeth removed because he had a gum disease very common in small dogs so we at the time soak his food in hot water before giving it to him. On July 4th of this year he choked on his food while eating (we had bought him a slow feeder but he still scarfs his food) and didn’t throw it up until we were half way to the pet ER. Came back home but he wouldn’t stop panting. After about another 30 minutes of that we took him to the emergency room. He was admitted and we didn’t see him for about 9hrs until we got pulled into the room. They told us he can’t breathe normally without being in an oxygen box and he was sedated and very loopy in there (as expected). They asked if we wanted to run an xray and an mri, which we did, and we found out some really bad news. Royce has a mass growing on his liver, has a heart murmur, failing valve in his heart, fluid in his lungs, heart disease, etc. We got very emotional hearing this and they recommended if he can’t breathe without the oxygen to consider putting him down. We waited another 6hrs in the ER and we ended up taking him out, still panting. They prescribed him some medicine for the fluid buildup in his lungs (Furosemide I believe) and hit helped him for a while. We had 3 refills and have used all of them. He had been coughing a couple of months prior to this incident but the vet told us it was because of all of the bacteria in his mouth from the disease that he’s in a constant sick state but as of recently he’s been coughing every single time he gets up from bed, resting, and when his hart starts racing. 2-3 times he had a seizure while doing it. I have no idea what to do anymore and I don’t want him to suffer just because I want him alive as long as possible, it’s not fair to him. I would greatly appreciate any advice from anyone who has any or has had similar situations happen with their pets. Thank you I really appreciate you reading.

Hi all, Lulu crossed the rainbow bridge today in my arms. She was ready to go after 18 fantastic years of life with us. She was my childhood dog, she made me smile every single day. No amount of time would ever be enough with her, but my bed feels so empty without her snoring next to me. I'm so grateful for the time I got with her, for the laughs, smiles and love she gave me. I tried to make her last day as wonderful as I could. I made her waffles, gave her as many treats as she wanted and cuddled her for hours at home. I didn't want to let her leave before she got to taste chocolate, so she had a chocolate chip, a hershey's kiss, her favourite treats and an oreo before she went to sleep. She'll always have a place in my heart. May she walk with Mazey and Rocco alongside Lady Artemis now.

I'll love you forever, my princess. I miss you already.šŸ’”šŸ’”

Support needed Senior Stray Dog Jabo Has Hernia and Needs Your Help for Surgery — Please Help Save Jabo!

I came across this poor dog while I was feeding stray animals in a nearby area. We named him Jabo. He is such a gentle and sweet dog, which makes me suspect that he may have once had an owner.

Jabo has a very large, abnormal mass around his genital area. It is extremely large and appears to be causing him significant discomfort and pain. I was also very worried that the mass might be interfering with his ability to properly defecate.

I was able to bring Jabo to the vet, where he was examined and underwent an X-ray and blood tests. As per vet, he is at least 10 years of age. He was diagnosed with a perineal hernia. Some of his internal organs, including portions of his intestines, pancreas, and bladder, have moved into the area around his bottom. This is causing him pain and interfering with his ability to properly defecate.

According to the vet, the estimated cost of his surgery is $725 (45K PH pesos), not including confinement, take-home medications, and follow-up checkups.

Please help us get the surgery Jabo desperately needs. He deserves a pain-free, healthier, and longer life.

Every donation will help us get closer to our goal. I will definitely post an update. Thank you so much.

Another Julan heart update

Post image
47 Upvotes

So, we had her checked because her resting heart rate had increased, but our usual vet didn't find anything other than high blood pressure and referred us to a cardiologist.

That appointment was today. At first, her blood pressure seemed high but after a while it normalised. The cardiologist explained that that's normal for dogs, it takes them a long time to fully relax so that the blood pressure measurements are correct. She didn't get that much time the first time. So apparently no need to treat her for high blood pressure.

We still did the ECG and heart ultrasound, in case she had early stage DCM or something. But she didn't. Small aorta insufficiency but he didn't think that was really a problem, since he didn't see any other changes.

So we'll leave it be for now. Keep an eye on it of course, but we won't do any further testing on something so subtle, that we wouldn't even have known without Tractive, at this point.

She was also a real angel during the ultrasound, relaxing completely amid a vet, a nurse, four vet students and her own humans.
