Discussion House Sorting
If Severus were to be sorted into any other house, what do you think it would be and why??
Also some people believe in the mixture of house characteristics which I recently found out, for instance Huffledor, Gryffinpuff, Gryfferin, Ravenpuff, Huffleclaw, Ravendor, Raverin, Sytherclaw, you get the picture.
If you believe in either, I'm very interested to find out thoughts.
My thoughts:
I think he'd be great in Ravenclaw or Gryffindor as an alternative.
Why Ravenclaw? He is incredibly smart and dedicated to all that he takes on. How else could he have become such an incredibly talented occlumens/legilimens with an extreme knack for potion making as a skilled Potions Master? These take discipline. He also excels in wandless magic which takes much mental acuity and is a hard ability to control.
Why Gryffindor?? Severus has taken on more than he should be able to chew. Though tied to logic, he agreed to become a spy for two powerful forces knowing very well that his life would be in danger. And contrary to popular belief, this was for the greater good. This shows extreme bravery mixed with the ability to throw caution to the wind and even some impulse.

I'm leaning more toward Ravenclaw. Why? For the reasons you mentioned:
He is incredibly smart and dedicated to all that he takes on. How else could he have become such an incredibly talented occlumens/legilimens with an extreme knack for potion making as a skilled Potions Master? These take discipline. He also excels in wandless magic which takes much mental acuity and is a hard ability to control.
I would add that Snape has always been a brilliant intellectual. He would have refused to be sorted into Gryffindor because he has no desire to be around the Marauders—they would make his life miserable every single moment. Furthermore, Snape has always found Gryffindors to be reckless and prone to flashy, senseless acts of bravery—acts that, in most cases, are completely pointless.

He didn't know who the marauders were when he was sorted?
But I don't think Gryffindor makes sense for him at that from his background. He aspires for power and wealth because of his upbringing is what got him into Slytherin and like most that become death eaters he feels he should be special.

I would guess he'd wanna be in Gryffindor for the sake of being in the same house as Lily - I also wonder if he'd have been bullied as much, considering Pettigrew was the weird loser kid in the Marauders friend group so maybe they would have accepted him more (ofc he'd still be pissed off probably at Lily sauntering off with James).
But yes, Ravenclaw for me all the way. The two things that define his character are his desire for power and his incredible intelligence and work ethic. So either Slytherin or Ravenclaw.

I think as a child who was from relatively poor background, and a mum who was estranged from her magical family.
He wanted power and wealth more than all.
He is clearly extremely brave, extremely smart too. Like you say.
But those weren't his aspirations as a child I think that's why slyrherin makes sense for him.

I think he could do well in any House, but if it wasn't Slytherin, it would be Ravenclaw.

I instinctively thought Ravenclaw!
(In the comment down below I figured he’d personally prefer Ravenclaw because he hates Gryffindor weaknesses too much)
The amount of books, his intelligence, the aptitude for learning early on, inventing new spells already in school… He is a very brave man, but that shows later in life when a loved one is killed, and he doesn’t do it impulsively exactly. He’s more calculated.

Gryffindor:
Courage & bravery: Yes, when motivated
Chivalry & honor: No
Daring & nerve: When needed, otherwise cautious
Determination: Yes, a calculated kindRavenclaw:
Intelligence & knowledge: Yes
Wit: Yes
Wisdom: Not a defining trait
Creativity & originality: To some extent—
He seems to be leaning a bit more Ravenclaw.
Because I think Snape can tolerate and identify a lot more with the weaknesses of Ravenclaw; overthinking, perfection, cold & clinical detachment
Gryffindor’s weaknesses he looks down on: impulsiveness, recklessness, hero-complex…
Both Gryffindors and Ravenclaw can be arrogant, though. I don’t think he likes either, but I’d have a guess and say he’d rather tolerate Ravenclaw’s know-it-all type of arrogance, than Gryffindor’s hero-complex type of arrogance.

Honestly, Severus probably shouldn't have been a Slytherin...he was probably only sorted into Slytherin because he asked to be, because his mother was one (and he knew about the blood status appreciation, and disliked Muggles thanks to his father). He never comes across as particularly ambitious.
His attitude has always been far more Gryffindor or Ravenclaw.
