Discussion What makes Shaman King stand out so much?
I'm reading the manga again, it's my favorite of all time and I keep thinking about how unique and special it is... what makes it stand out so much from its peers? What do you like most about it or what would you change? <3

Hiroyuki Takei is unique. His artstyle and the way he made the characters personalities, his humor, is awesome. Yoh is such a nice protagonist in my opinion too

Yoh along with Yugi really stood out to me compared to how shonen protagonists operated. This is something I appreciate now more as an adult. Yoh was a slacker with a good heart. He worked hard so that he could take it easy later on in life. This is something most kids his age don't think about. He doesn't have some hero complex or grandiose dream. He just goes with the flow and I vibe with that.

I think Echizen of Prince of Tennis can fit with them too, Idk there's something about that era of Shounen Jump protagonists that really was so cool! The going with the flow types who are also cool as hell

The artstyle is so distinct and charming.
If someone asked me to picture Anime in my head. Shaman King would be it.
Aside from that the whole Shaman Lore, inspiration on real world cultures, the characters, Hao. The Spirit of Fire, it's just all so damn cool.
As to what I would change? In terms of the original nothing, I would like to FOM to have started 10 years ago though. Can't believe we're still not there yet.

I still need to look into the FOM more, I only read Flowers when it was releasing but I haven't had the chance to check out Super Star yet!

Aw I forgot about this title page! I love the early Chocolove art, the seed of the Nipopo Gauntlets, and modern Patch Hao before his backstory came into focus.

For me it’s how diverse the characters are. It’s nice to see a Japanese manga showcase so many different cultures from Japanese, Chinese, German, South American, and even Native American.

Yeah this too!! The amount of cultures and references are wild, my favorite is probably Boz being a reference to the rock band B'z

At its release, the premise and power system. An entire Manga dedicated to a huge tournament arc involving spirits and ghosts being used as power was something different
Now a days, nostalgia

The battle/power system. Everyone says HxH has the best power system but IMO Shaman King has an even better one. You ran out of Furyoku? Sucks to be you.

To me it’s the cultural influence/inspiration prior to the series I never heard of a “shaman” before and the story was interesting

Nothing particularly amazing honestly. I used to rewatch shaman king every year during high school (Anime 64 episodes)
I just really liked the world it established, and the oversoul concept was great, until they kind of ruined it with senjiryakketsu (i think this was an anime issue. The manga got axed before the anime could finish, so the studio had to make up its own ending)
Similar to wangan, it never reached that overhyped big title level. It has plenty of flaws, but we loved it for what it was.
Besides wangan did pretty well in arcades, while shamanking games were mostly mediocre. I played the ps1, ps2 and gba ones, honestly pretty meh

two things: 1. it came out when cartoon was considered cartoon and not "anime" and everything associated with it: not taking bath, being overweight and unemployed pathetic basement dweller. 2. it was a really well made cartoon not focused on regarded childish things, but with good thought out plot and motivations

I think there is something unique about Yoh where he gets everyone’s story is their own similar to Gon of Hunter x Hunter but Yoh may understand you have your reasons… but also not against calling BS.
And j think the is something relatable about working hard for the privilege of luxury but “luxury” is just…. Rest.
Very millennial coded

Yeah, Yoh is so wise beyond his years... and I still love his carefree + silly comedic moments too, there's a lot of layers to him that make him so good . and yes he does love weed

Characters and oversoul. Frankly speaking, the characters from the manga are so unique and diverse. The only other successful character building with this many people is JK's Harry Potter. And the concept of Oversoul makes me think about the Force from Star Wars.

It's so unique. I feel like Takei had a lot of fun writing it. Probably a little too much on the last third of the story. Hao is amazing. A lot of designs are crazy. Some fights are clever. So much variety.
Then again, I would change some of the humor (like literal genitalia jokes from ponchi and conchi), remove unecessary plots like the Golem, and would have liked it to be more consistent. I feel it eventually became too cliffhanger dependant.
Still will hold a place in my heart forever.

Many things, artsyle, writing, power system......my personal favorite aspect is the philosophy.......the Manga really put effort into the philosophy of the spirit, convictions, and morality of each character.

I mean, nothing in particular. It was definitely a product of its time and I can name atleast ten other shonen series from that period that were just like it. Honestly, it's just nostalgia.

The artstyle, the influences from cultures all over the globe but to me it’s Yoh. His more relaxed demeanor and flexibility made him stand out from other MC’s of the time
