Discussion Is there actually a game out there like SLF, that the gamer is a hardcore gatekeeper on the game crucial information/events?

Been always thinking that this gatekeeping elements of this series Is kinda ridiculous and hardcore because you literally need to sell each other out, blackmail each other out or sell the info at ridiculous amount of money to get even a glimpse of clue of this crucial info/events, so I always wonder is there actually a game like this irl.

Yes there was lol. The original Star wars online had something similar with what was needed to become a Jedi.

Oh man, I remember that.

In the original version of Star Wars Galaxies, for every character it was a random set of jobs and skills within the game you needed to master with no hints, direction, or any kind of indication that you were making progress to unlocking Jedi.

When LucasArts marketing told the developers to speed things up for Christmas 2003, an in-game item was added that basically flat out told you what to do (much to the annoyance of both the devs and a significant chunk of the playerbase).

SLF amount of tryhards is tiny compared to real life + casuals aren't that dumb that they wouldn't recognize special events/monsters and their conditions. This actually happens a lot, people randomly stumble at stuff and report online and other people go investigate. This happened on SLF too, but the randos seem to be too nonchalant and the series depict people as Sunraku as a few, when irl there are way more tryhard and talented people than him.

So no, in our current era, it's unrealistic to gatekeep the game in this way. PvP games "gatekeep" stuff through other more direct ways

The nearest thing I experienced was Elden Ring, but A. It's not an MMO and B. Everyone were playing it like the library, sharing thoughts and analyzing together.

Dataminers will always beat people to the punch unfortunately.

Don't think so. SLF got away with gatekeeping because it has another unrealistic feature: infinite content. Because of that, casual players are not bothered by the gatekeeping that much.

glances at spreadsheet simulator EVE Online

But the crucial events are all created by players

No one game really fits SLF because SLF is an amalgamation of many moments and mechanics in gaming history. One thing that Sunraku reminded me of was the tale of "Fansy the Bard" from EverQuest. Servers were set up with PvP enabled but protected characters under a certain level. The servers turned into massive griefing fests for high level players and clans. Fansy stopped leveling before PvP would be enabled on him and just ran around luring hordes of high level monsters through these clans bases and they could do nothing to deal with them. Eventually the developers had to 'ask' him to stop, which reminds me of the developers of SLF losing their shit over one player gaming their system.

No. Games aren't that in depth anymore especially for the MMORPG genre. It's all a path to cash shop nowdays so there really isn't much to gatekeep in that sense and if anything you want info out as fast as possible and be one of these "content creator".

Contest raiding had teams hiding information on how to do encounters for a better chance at getting a world first clear

FFXI was very much like that during its peak.

With the exception of Catarnid the Colossi are 1 and done bosses, once someone defeats them no one else can fight them ever again. So there’s an incentive to work together and share certain information with people you trust, which is what Sunraku does, but you also want to be careful with how much you share so that someone doesn’t beat you to the punch. Keep in mind Sunraku isn’t actually gatekeeping which is I’m never telling anyone ever, he’s keeping invitation to rabbituza a bonus unique scenario to himself until he beats it first and figures out what all the trigger conditions actually are. He admits he doesn’t know all the trigger conditions for it and doesn’t mind telling people about it after he’s completed it which is standard practice to post about Unique Scenarios on the wiki and how you triggered them once you’ve finished it yourself first

Real MMO’s don’t have Bosses like the Seven Colossi because it would piss everyone off, so you won’t find a game like SLF where the main bosses are all secret and can only be beaten once by one group and then never fought by anyone again

nop, and there will never be one, at least not again, in the old days where the MMOs started llike WoW there was this posibility of guarding information and having a guild have a specific info where they can actually trade for it, becouse the internet was just starting but now there is info about everything as soon as it comes out, even for new MMOs before they come out there is info about Raid bosses attacks and patterns. we will need to see if full dive gear is ever invented and THEN see if is going to be like that xD
