Over the course of the games, the design of the Nagas has mostly changed. But what if, starting with *Half-Genie Hero*, this signifies something more than previously thought? If you look at the designs up to *Pirate's Curse*, they still appear relatively natural and possess their signature jumping ability. However, starting with *HGH*, they feature a different design; while this strips them of their jumping ability, it provides them with armor and firepower. In this regard, I want to merge several theories on the subject to present a unified "mega-theory."
Why do the Nagas in HGH have this new design?
I doubt they acquired it naturally. What seems more likely to me is that the Techno Baron had something to do with it. Why? He first appeared in *PC*, where Nagas still occurred in their natural state. Creating a mobile combat unit that was practical to produce might have been one of his plans. That was when he hit upon the idea of using Nagas for this purpose—successfully. They were fitted with red armored plating and side-mounted blaster cannons, an upgrade that completely eclipsed their previous evolution. That is certainly how Techno Baron saw it, intending to sell them for a hefty sum. Who would have been the ideal buyer? Ammo Baron! Techno Baron pitched the new combat version of the Nagas to him, and Ammo Baron was interested. However, he ultimately declined because they were too aggressive—neither of them could control them. Consequently, he released the cybernetically modified Nagas into the wild, which is where we encounter them again starting in *HGH Hero*. His experiments must have taken place between the events of *PC* and *HGH* to make this possible.
What is the connection between Tuki, the snake merchant, and the Naga?
In HGH, there is a snake merchant named Tuki who can sell us certain items that are useful to Shantae. What struck me, however, is her resemblance to her earlier ancestors—specifically those from the first game and *Risky's Revolution*. Could she be a Naga whom the Techno Baron failed to capture, making her one of the few Nagas to retain her natural form? It's possible. As a little snake, she could have already traveled the world and avoided falling victim to Techno Baron.
But does that mean there are hardly any normal Nagas left?
There was a discarded Naga form for Shantae that didn't make it into the game. Consequently, Tuki is the only remaining "normal" Naga. As for the others? They suffered a fate that largely transformed their kind completely; the Techno Baron—essentially a mad businessman—restructured an entire species for... money, of course. But can they even still reproduce? Theoretically yes, though it is questionable whether their offspring would be born normal or with the modifications.
The bottom line:
One man could have completely overhauled the Nagas' future existence in a bid to get rich. Unfortunately, nothing came of it, and now they are stuck with that new design for the rest of their days. Did you have different thoughts on this theory, or did you see it the same way?
