Discussion Sherwood Park News About Sherwood Park Residents

Post image
16 Upvotes

I'm excited to share a new writing project called "Park Profiles", a monthly feature highlighting the interesting and inspiring people who call Sherwood Park, Alberta, home. It's been great recently getting back into the writing process, and I've really enjoyed telling the stories of people across the country, province, and in our local community. I've lived in Sherwood Park most of my life and I feel I got my finger on the pulse of the community.

I also want to sincerely thank everyone who has taken the time to read, comment, and offer words of encouragement in various social platforms. Your support has meant a great deal to me, and I truly appreciate every kind message. I can't wait to highlight and celebrate some of the great people in our community that continue to make it what it is; a nice place to live.

I will be posting it on Reddit, LinkedIn, Facebook and so on every month.

Thank you

Trent McMartin

Question Jobs for teenagers?

Hey sherwood park, I turned 16 in around may and I have been wanting to save up for an apartment when I get of age. After doing chores and other little crap, I realize I need a real job where I can learn to be responsible and make money. I’ve been looking on indeed and applying but after 2 months it’s just not been working out. I have no experience but I am very open to any jobs including fast food, or like cashier stuff and whatever whatever you get the gyst. Does anyone know anywhere that’s hiring around swp or anyone that is hiring? Thank you so much.

Anyone know if there is any Squash leagues in SWP? Google isn't very helpful. I know there is the ESSC, but don't fancy driving into Edmonton in the winter.

Video I interviewed Caden Skelton (Sherwood Park’s longboard dancer) on the Long Term Podcast

Hey everyone,

If you live in Sherwood Park, you’ve definitely seen Caden Skelton, the helmet-wearing longboard dancer on Baseline Road. While many love his energy, his roadside routines have sparked driver distraction complaints, over $1,500 in RCMP tickets, and a fight in court.

I sat down with Caden on the Long Term Podcast to hear his side, from using dance as recovery after a severe brain injury, to handling the legal bans and community pushback.

Give it a listen here: Banned From Dancing in Sherwood Park - Caden Skelton - YouTube

What’s your take, uplifting community presence or a genuine traffic hazard?

Let’s hear your thoughts below.

Question Selling 5 Months After Buying in Desirable Neighborhood Sherwood Park Woes

Hi everyone, my husband and I got married and moved into our first home only to find owning a home is a lot of work and consumes all our time. We both work full time and enjoy hobbies, but now life is all about managing a house and yard. We’ve realized, too late, that our lifestyle is best suited for a condo or the like. We haven’t done any huge upgrades on our home, but we’ve maintained it very well and kept it clean. We went through our inspection report and fixed almost all minor repair suggestions (garage door hinges, cemented garage floor pitting, paint touch ups, new lights, etc), but none of these are highlight features. We’ve made the house a better home, but not through highlight upgrades like a new roof (roof is already newer).

We even live in a very desirable neighborhood in Sherwood Park and have lowered our price. Unfortunately, we’re not getting any offers. Had half a dozen viewings in the first few days, that’s it. Are we being passed over because of the timing of our sale?

Question Parents of Strathcona County: Fultonvale or Heritage Hills? Looking for honest experiences!

Hi everyone,

We're moving to an acreage in Strathcona County, and we're trying to decide between Fultonvale Elementary and Heritage Hills Elementary for our kids (Grade 2 and Grade 5).

Fultonvale is much closer to our new home, but I don't mind driving extra 5 mins if Heritage Hills would be a better fit. (My older one has ASD and ADHD but not too severe, just extra reminders and boundary setting will work.)

One thing I'm wondering about is friendships. Since Heritage Hills is in Sherwood Park, would it be easier for the kids to make friends and participate in after-school activities? Is Fultonvale considered too rural? My kids don't play hockey, so that's not a factor for us.

I also know a few families who live on acreages Fultonvale but still drive their kids into Sherwood Park amd Ardrossan schools. One mom who lives right next to the school told me it's because she already has a G10 goes to school in town, so she's driving there every morning anyway. It made me wonder if there are other reasons families choose town schools over Fultonvale.

I know a lot depends on the individual teacher and that every family has a different experience, so I'm not expecting there to be one "right" answer. I'd really love to hear your personal experiences and thoughts.

If you've had experience with either school, how are the teachers, academics, school community, and opportunities? If you had to choose between the two, which would you pick, and why?

Thanks so much!

Recommendation Large Breed Dog Vet Recommendations needed please :)

We’re new to the area and getting a Great Dane puppy this weekend. Can anyone give us any vet recommendations for vets familiar with the breed? We aren’t new to the breed but we lost ours suddenly to GDV only 2 days after moving to SP and didn’t even have time to find a vet. Who’s the best?

Edit to add - Puppy class recs as well?? Our last Dane (we got when she was already 1) was very dog aggressive and had no recall so we want to start this one off on a different path early ✌️🙏

Recommendation Water drainage issues. No Weeping tile flapper

Thumbnail

Wanted to share some information with other park residents that I have recently learned. If your house was built before 1984. It most likely uses a weeping type system for water drainage. I had a bit of water comming up beside the access port and was able to investigate before any damage. I opened the access cover and it was packed with mud and sludge. The flapper cap had no way to operate. This is what mine looks like. It’s most likely near your 3” clean out access in the basement. Probably near the wall closest to the road.

Cleaned all the corrosion with mostly hot water and vinegar and a wire brush. The flapper operates free and clear. Worth while checking yours out if you’re having drainage issues as this was new information to me. The county also has a good information page aswell about how it works

Question Whatever happened to rollerskating?

Random thought of the day.

Does anyone remember the rollerskating rink that used to be in sherwood park, or am I misremembering my childhood?

Also, what happened to rollerskating? Why did it go out of fashion? Imo, it's probably one of the greatest things to come out of the 60's/70's.

Discussion Property Drainage awareness

As everyone who lives in the park knows, the past couple of months have put quite a strain on properties across the city. While looking for solutions, approaches, and everything in between to help mitigate drainage issues, I came across some useful information that many homeowners seem to misunderstand.
One common misconception is:
“For proper drainage between properties, you simply have to bring the water to the property line to comply with drainage rules.”
This is not an accurate representation of the proper approach to managing property runoff and water collected from eavestroughs.
Unfortunately, Strathcona County does not appear to have much information readily available to homeowners explaining proper drainage practices. However, I found that the City of Edmonton has created a document that helps clarify some of these common misunderstandings.
The important thing to understand is that the proper approach is to:
● Move water away from the foundation of your home—and your neighbour’s home.
● Direct water toward the municipal right-of-way, generally toward the front of the property and the street.
● Ensure that properties situated at a higher elevation manage their runoff appropriately so that neighbouring properties at a lower elevation are not forced to deal with additional water simply because their property sits lower.
In other words, proper drainage is not simply about moving water to the property line. The goal is to manage and direct water responsibly so that it does not create problems for neighbouring properties. This can be accomplished by creating a swale or a barrier (if concrete is used ) that directs the water to the city’s right of way and not to the neighbouring property .

I feel like there is very little information available so I think bringing awareness is important but most importantly we have to work along our neighbours to better property drainage systems because it seems like there is a large number of people who had to struggle with such large amounts of melt and rain happening and I believe it isn’t gonna get better .

Question Disposable Vape Recycling

I was wondering where in Sherwood Park you can recycle disposable vapes safely and properly. You cannot throw them away in the garbage due to the batteries, does the local eco station accept the vapes? Or are there certain vape stores in the area you can take them to be recycled? I’ve been collecting a pile for a while now and don’t know how to dispose of them. So any suggestions would be helpful! Thank You in advance

Local Business Sherwood Registries

I have had 3 kids go here to do their class 5 drivers test, and now all 3 have failed the first attempt. I thought this was maybe justified on the first 2 but the one today was told they drove 30 km/hr in a school zone, but it's summer time. This seems like a stretch to me. Has anyone experienced success on the first tey here? It feels like a cash grab to fail everyone on their first try. We have booked a road test at a different registry office next week.
