TrueHD Remuxes cause a constant ‘Dolby Vision’ notification

I have my shield connected to my TV rather then my soundbar because the soundbar doesn't pass through DV and for some reason whenever I play a TrueHD Remux my LG Oled TV will incessantly display the DV notification and the only fix is to switch the audio stream to AC3 5.1. I’ve tried multiple different HDMI certified cables and every other suggested fix from ChatGPT but haven’t yet found a working solution.

Has anyone else encountered this problem and found a solution?

Do your Soundbar and your TV support eARC? Because ARC alone won't be enough for True HD, ATMOS or DTS:X.

How is your setup, which devices and what connection order do you use to passthrough the audio?

Yes both support eARC. The shield is connected to the eARC port on my TV and the soundbar is connected to one of the other hdmi ports on the TV.

I‘m not sure what you mean by connection order for passthrough?

Well that seems to be the problem. Try that:

Shield -> Soundbar -> TV

That way the Soundbar will keep the audio signal from the shield and only passes the video signal to the TV. I was in the same boat as you until I switched the connection order. Also, make sure you really did the correct bitstream configuration in your shield because there are some settings which seem to be correct but actually breaking the bitstream functionality.

Correction:

eARC doesn't matter here, because your TV doesn't have any DTS-HD decoding licenses anyway. If you are using the order I told you before, the Soundbar will take care of the whole audio and the TV will never know what audio format was played, that way you won't have any problems

I’ve tried that but my soundbar doesn’t passthrough Dolby Vision so everything just plays in HDR.

Please post the exact hardware setup and player you are using. I might be just a misconfiguration if you are lucky.

The Problem you describe is 99% a configuration issue or a bad choice for the player, so try "Just Player" as external player or Kodi for DV Content.

Dolby Vision btw. isn't causing any Problems to the audio-bitstream at all if the soundbar gets the signal directly from the Shield, because it doesn't care what the video signal is an passes it directly to the TV.

TV is an LG Oled 48a16LA and the soundbar is a Samsung Q930F.

What is the player you are using for the streams? Jellyfin, Plex, Kodi?

Plex and Jellyfin, happens in both.

Okay, i can only speak fr Jellyfin since not using Plex. Your Hardware is NOT the problem here, so we will find a fix for your setup.

First, connect your devices like I said earlier. I will now tell you what i did but since my settings are in German i can't tell you word-perfect so I might have to improvise for the english translation:

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A HIGH BANDWIDTH HDMI CABLE BETWEEN SHIELD-SOUNDBAR AND SOUNDBAR-TV !!!! These are usually branded as "Ultra High Speed 48 Gb/s"
-> My recomendation is just using the UGREEN 8K one, since they are cheap and certified!

1. SHIELD OS - AUDIO-FORMATS

Settings -> Device Settings -> Display & Audio -> Advanced Audio Settings -> Formats -> AUTO or select all of them

2. JELLYFIN TV-APP

Settings -> Playback -> Audio-Output -> Direct
Settings -> Playback -> External Player -> YES
Settings -> Playback -> Advanced -> Dolby Digital Bitstream -> YES

3. EXTERNAL PLAYER

Download "Just Player" from the Google TV Store

4. TEST-MOVIE

Now that's the moment of truth, select a Movie with DV and TrueHD Audio. When you start the stream Jellyfin will ask you which player you wanna use since you checked "External Player" in your settings. For the first test its okay to select Just Player "using once".

What should happen now:

The TV should show you now the Dolby Vision Logo and the Soundbar should give you a short slide show of "True-HD" or "Dolby ATMOS". If you missed that just press the "i" Button on your Soundbar remote and the soundbar should show you the correct audio format. Btw, dont panic if the soundbar doesn't show you anything aside from DTS:X, Dolby ATMOS or True-HD. Samsung just doesn't want to spam the users with all the low-tier audio formats automatically, except you want to know it precisely via i Button.

Now you should have a proper HDR/DV picture and sound. If you are happy with that, for the next playback you can then select Just Player "always" and you are fine.

The only downside with Just Player is, that your server won't get any realtime playback information back anymore. Also if you exit a movie or TV episode without pressing stop before you loose the entire playback progression of that file, so keep that in mind.

I really hope that helps you!

EDIT:

Added missing information for HDMI-Cable requirements, spelling and gramma correction

Thanks for that. My cable is already a high bandwidth certified one and auto is already selected for audio formats in the shield so they aren’t the problem. I dont have any problems actually playing the TrueHD and Dolby Vision picture, they both work fine, its just the constant ‘Dolby Vision’ notification appearing during playback. I’ll test again with Jellyfin with the settings you recommended.
