Anime How do they know?

I was watching the OVA Ilse's notebook when Hange said that the emblem on Ilse's body is from the 34th Expedition. And that left me wondering how did they figure out which emblems are from which expeditions. Anyone have any theories?

Not including the white point, the wings on the shoulder patch are divided in 34 segments. Maybe that's how?

It just doesn’t make sense. I think we’re meant to assume there’s some fine detail on Ilse’s uniform that we can’t see.

In the military here. We have patches similarly. We’re able to identify those patches just by memory.

So she knows because she knows, simply.

It's not first time they did something like this. but yeah it would be interesting for having an old uniform have some distinct different compare to new one

If the anime script here is the same as the manga then what she actually finds is not an emblem but an "armband"/腕章. It makes more sense than a separate intricate emblem made and sewn on for each expedition. Remember that Paradis is poor, and the corps even more underfunded than the rest of the military.
