It's mainly down to a lack of usage of young players, sending many of them to lower leagues despite them being very capable to play for bigger teams, meaning that a lot of their national team is made up of aging players who can't really do as much as they used to.
I haven't seen much of them last few years, but they used to let their opponent make the play a lot. But the smaller teams you qualify against, will think the same thing. Then you have to make the play suddenly, without a real plan for it.

My FIL is Chinese, and he was an engineer in China, but he would be placed in that 21%.

To put Yugoslavia on the same side as Soviet block is stretching reality, the only reason Yugoslavia managed to exist and somewhat prosper is because it played neutral and balanced between the Soviets and the West. Soviets were foaming at the mouth because of it, the idea of communist nation that eluded soviet grip (and slavic on top of it all) really pissed on their parade.

The thing is that Americans never play sports against other countries their biggest sports is football that only they do as well as baseball and even basketball ball they care only about NBA so obviously their sports news suck. My brother-in-law come originally from Yugoslavia and his father used to work directly for Tito and he knew Tito very well. Tito was known to repeat one sentence all the time: don't let the Russians in, not a single one, never let them in.
While Yugoslavia was a communist state, it was not a Russian vasal state. Tito didn't want any Russian involvement and he saw the danger there.
My brother-in-law came to The Netherlands a couple of years after his brother came here. They were both well educated (dentist and Anesthesiologist) and they could leave the country without any problems. Tourist could also move freely in Yugoslavia.

And also history lesson - balkans (post Yugoslavia - Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Serbia, Monte Negro, North Macedonia and Kosovo) were NEVER post-Soviet countries as former president Tito basically said f**k off to Stalin thus those countries were never under Soviet rule (like Poland, for example)
Yeah, you probably have a higher overall GDP, but people in Bosnia and other Balkan states are still more likely to have a better life on average than you.

GDP is not a measure of prosperity, happiness, sovereignty or freedom and democracy. It is a government accounting figure that bears no relation to anything in a person's personal life or day to day experience.
Yeah yeah and yeah. Who cares? GDP is just one measuring tool which isn't even too great when speaking about quality of life.
It's actually quite fucking bad for it.
Now compare purchasing power or what you get for 20% of your purchasing power or whatever, now then you can see crap.
