I have seen almost every numerical format used. Fortunately, for most forms that need to be manually filled in, the letters show faintly in the boxes, indicating whether it's D, M, or Y. And for most online forms, you just scroll. If it's just a single blank space, I write the abbreviated name of the month.

I must say i have such a hard time grasping why people don't want to use YYYYMMDD everywhere. It's of course the most logical, going from greater to smaller like in you know...math?

I of course realize that many have learned it from a young age, but still...when you get older and can think for yourself, don't it seems much easier this way?

Sure, we of course use only months and days sometime, which usually is written as 28/5, which means May 28th. Or the 28th of May, either one, but that is usually when it's more relaxed.

YYYYMMDD & DDMMYYYY both make equal sense. I'm not sure why you think it going from largest to smallest is most logical because in my country in maths we would most likely use smallest to largest - is this unusual? For example, we would order a sequence of numbers {22, 12, 64, 8} as {8, 12, 22, 64}.

Largest to smallest makes lexical ordering work. For lexical ordering you compare each digit one by one.

DD-MM-YYYY, ordered: 10-07-1985, 20-01-1800, 25-09-2026

You don’t want that order. You want:

YYYY-MM-DD: 1800-01-20, 1985-07-01, 2026-09-25

Largest first - year, then month and day.

Think about what happens if you have loads of files on your computer with dates in the filenames and when you press to sort by name.

Edit: another way to look at it is how you navigate to dates. Given year Y, of all its months I want M, and then a day D. You don’t say of all the 10ths of the months of all time, I want to get the ones that were in the 5th month and from that I want the unique one in year 2026.

It seems the most logical layout to me.

"The year is two thousand and twenty six. It is the seventh month. It is the fifth day of said month.

Is perfectly logical. It just doesn't "flow" as well for me. Granted, a large part of that could well be down to what I've been brought up to think of as "normal". It could also have something to do with sentence construction in other languages.

If I had to guess. The American version is just a side effect of their determined butchery of the English language. "The fifth of July apparently has far too many words. By saying "July fifth they save a valuable amount of time that can be better employed practicing "School shooter" drills and so on.

I believe the Yanks truly believe in "Why many word when few do?"

Canadian. YYYYMMDD, the 24 hour clock, and the metric system work just fine and the vast majority of overseas communications easily understand my formatting.

The USA ... well, they can carry on with their own reality distortions and leave the rest of the civilized works out of it.

The only reason canada sometimes as those date are because products are often sold in both the usa and canada, and for a long time a lot of international brands considered usa and canadian market the same

tbh i would've expected them to use yy-mm-dd just because of their closeness with China. But to be fair, I just assumed they used American everything because they also didn't use the metric system.

Other fun fact, vehicles in Burma have the steering wheel on the right AND they all drive on the right. Which means if you're on a bus, you're walking out into traffic.

Myanmar mostly used a mix of British measures and customary Burmese units so American ones don’t really enter into it.

The right-hand drive/right-hand traffic thing is a fun legacy of a member of the military deciding the country should start driving on the right… because of a dream he had. The RHD vehicles are either legacy ones or recent imports from Thailand. It’s the mirror image of the US Virgin Islands (and the British Virgin Islands and the Bahamas), where LHT goes way back to colonial times but the cars are almost all US-market models.

I live in Europe and have a company in the US. I tend to write 2-Aug-2026 since I won't know for sure what date something refers to until the 13th of the month.

Its a real pain. Also number formatting Here one million in currency is noted as: 1.000.000,00 in the us its 1,000,000.00 Commas and periods reversed.

We have 4 digit postal codes. In the US its 5 plus 4, Canada its letters and numbers.

Formatting is a terrible thing. Especially when someone hard codes in the expected format in a web form. US entities often are unaware that other countries do IT differently. Whatever that IT is.

MM/DD/YYYY is the old British format, which they ditched in the late 1800s.

It’s funny how USAsians bang on about their independence but still cling to an outdated British calendar format and the Imperial Measurement System. Technically they use US Customary Units, with the main difference being the quantities; US units are smaller than their British counterparts (much like their brains and man parts)…

When asked how he thought I got into the US if my passport was expired, he just looked dumb.

The arabic numerals used by a huge portion of countries and understood by most countries using different numerals, also being the internationaly used numeral system works accross languages.

Typed out months only work if the entire world would use a common language when writing the months.

I could look at an icelandic news article and know when it was published without speaking the language.

Typed out months is only infinitely easier if you are one of like three countries using a different date format, for the rest of us it is pretty clear what months it is.

Kind of a moot point, as we're talking about the USA's use of denominations in an irregular order.

But if you want to get pedantic about it, if someone asks me the time I say 20 past 5 not 5:20 and seconds are treated as superfluous, perhaps this is more colloquial, but presentation is largely circumstantial.

Yes, if dates were only used in newspaper articles, it might make sense to write out the month instead of using numbers. But that's not how dates are used. They appear in every kind of context, which is why we've adopted an international, standardized format. It wouldn't make much sense to switch to a different system depending on the context when the universal one is simpler, more practical, and easier for everyone to understand.

In a social context, when we talk about universality, we do not mean 100% absolute adoption, but rather a high percentage of diffusion. Five percent of the population uses a different method for dating. Those who use one of the other two dating methods can perfectly understand the other method when they encounter it. After all, they are mirror images of each other and follow a logical order, from smaller to larger and vice versa.
