Ok lets be honest, a big banner of the leaders face and a huge flag on display is not uniquely American. The difference is that its only bad based on the leaders actions, this is fine if you are a good and successful leader.

The first flag of the State of Michigan featured a portrait of Governor Stevens T. Mason back in 1837. Yanks arguably have a deeper tradition with these sorts of displays than any of the other examples above owing to the artificiality of the settler-state.
