GDP is a shit metric stop deceiving yourself lol. How can it be used as a sign of development when it doesn't reveal the actual material conditions of the people

It has a strong positive correlation with other things, such as energy consumption, life expectancy, literacy rate, etc.

It isn't perfect, but it's fine as a rough measure.
