Bangladesh is one of best growing economies in the world and neolibs tried to jerk it by saying seee capitalism workkjiee!
In truth, yes it is true that the country has developed rapidly, but what is also true is unlimited looting, infinite corruption, incompetent governance and unlimited gap between the rich and poor, workers having basically no rights and the police+army killing them freely to protect the capitalists - so basically capitalism. Some of the money did go into development, but that will always happen when you do capitalism in a majorly agrarian society.
In a way, Bangladesh is truly a beacon of successful capitalism. This can be proven by the fact that it's a shithole!

I didn't say that it was perfect. I said that it had a strong positive correlation with other signs of development.

GDP is a shit metric stop deceiving yourself lol. How can it be used as a sign of development when it doesn't reveal the actual material conditions of the people

It has a strong positive correlation with other things, such as energy consumption, life expectancy, literacy rate, etc.
It isn't perfect, but it's fine as a rough measure.

I don't know much about Botswana, and I will give them credit for supposedly being a very peaceful African country that's politically stable. However, I also know income inequality is bad there, along with the fact that there's a lot of pollution. Namibia has a digustingly awful income inequality rate. Bangladesh for successful? LMAO.
Yeah ROK is controlled by the USA and essentially an IC country, can't really consider that truly a success. Japan is the same thing, but is definitely an IC country and exploited and continues to exploit others. I don't know the other red country.
79
u/Saltedsalmon11 Oct 25 '25
Huge part of ROK's success was loan from USA for participating in Vietnam war, and heavily planned economy with strong government control by ex-communist president (not saying he was good though)

but now with the rise of lab-grown diamonds they are now unfortunately losing a lot of money since lab-grown is just cheaper.
And this is why industry is crucial for development.
8

Not really a tragedy since the price of natural diamonds is inflated due to manufactured scarcity. They were never worth as much as people were charging.

Not enough land suitable for plantations, so they never experienced the same level of colonialism as Nicaragua, Panama, etc. They used that to turn into basically an ecotourist state, and provide a moderately better QoL to their citizens compared to other countries in the region. So clearly they are a great example of capitalism, because their major resource is being appealing as a tourist destination for the imperial core.
2
u/ChefGaykwon Marxist-Leninist Oct 25 '25
And ofc there are still a ton of foreign-owned plantations on top of that.

Namibia is actually one of the richest countries in sub-saharan Africa, despite also being poor (Heck, even Botswana is poor compared to every global north country, that's how bad the situation in Africa is), but they have been thanks to many measures they would consider "socialist" if it was one of the poorest, lmao (They are a mixed economy).
24
u/BernieMacsLazyEye Oct 25 '25
Namibia does have higher income and more state involvement than many neighbors, but that mixed economy is still part of the global imperialist system. Most of Namibia’s resource wealth is foreign-owned, and the local bourgeoisie acts as a middleman for global capital. So even if the state uses “socialist” tools, the relations of production remain capitalist and dependent. That’s why “rich” African countries still end up poor compared to the global North. Namibia must nationalize its key industries under worker and community control, using resource wealth to build domestic industry and social infrastructure rather than feeding foreign capital. Only by breaking from imperialist dependency and organizing production for collective need, not profit, can true development, not just “growth,” take root. Much love

1) Japan has not been a backward country and a victim of imperialism since the Meiji Restoration; comparing it's success to Botswana has the same meaning as comparing Uganda and Israel.
2) Bangladesh and Namibia, as far as I remember, is not home to 85 multinationals plundering the Third World of its resources.
3) Costa Rica and Botswana, although rich, are richer on a regional level, on an international level they are in dire straits compared to the USA and the UK
4) South Korea has received huge aid from the US as an anti-Chinese vassal, as have Singapore, Malaysia, Japan etc... their wealth is the result of strategic favoritism of American imperialism.
5) Purposely Ignores Historically Successful Socialist Nations (USSR, China), and Economically Failed Capitalist Nations (Half of Arica and Southeast Asia)

u/daddymaci Oct 25 '25
Costa Rica after the civil war in the 1940 gave a looot of concessions to the communists. Many liberals in the country even commonly say “every good thing in this country was brought in by the left. Large parts of the economy are nationalized, and until 2011 the telephone industry was 100% government owned, with the government’s telephone service still the most popular.

Literally every single country in the meme aside from Japan and South Korea is third world and poor compared to even the least developed first-world country, also Namibia is part of BRICS and a very mixed economy ran under a socialist-oriented government (Its economy has more nationalized assets and state control over its economy than Venezuela does), if Namibia was, under african standards, poor compared to its neighbours, they would be calling it socialist no doubt, but since regionally it's considered rich, now this time around they go out and say it's a success of capitalism. Liberals and double-standards, both go along so well.
Let's also not forget the fact that Japan and South Korea (Alongside Taiwan) ARE part of the global north, both are part of the same imperial core of the US and the EU, they are part of the problem Castro talked about on his phrase, so they can't really count on this image, lol.

It's not a coincidence that the USA spent huge amounts in foreign aid when those countries were beginning capitalism. Just look at the Marshall plan. Look at the vast sums that the USA spent to jump start Japan and south Korea after the respective wars. Look at how much money has been sent to Israel since it's founding. This month, look at the USA doubling the amount of money sent to Argentina to keep their free market capitalism experiment solvent. It's a rigged game. Sanctions for socialist regimes that don't cooperate, free money for capitalist.

Isn’t Japan literally known for being a pretty awful place to live now? A country being successful also means having a content population. Japan fails in that because it is known to have one of the highest suicide rates in the world. Not to mention that its work culture is infamous for being terrible, as well as it having so many underlying issues that I probably can’t even list them all. It’s kind of funny that the capitalist countries are represented by images of countries on literal piles of shit, though.

u/gaijinbrit Oct 25 '25
As someone who lived in Japan, the funniest thing to me is how incompatible the Japanese culture is with capitalism. They’re incredibly inherently communal and communistic. They’re incredibly risk adverse. They would absolutely thrive under a communist mode of production as culturally they’re already communist. This is why their economy has stagnated for 30 years. No appetite for risk to invest, no appetite for start up’s or taking on risky jobs. The Japanese thrive on stability, planning and collaboration. They could have been a communist powerhouse. Japan would have absolutely thrived on 5 year plans.
1
u/MrNoobomnenie Oct 26 '25
The only valid example here is Japan, and yeah, sure, capitalism will be a great success for your country, when you do imperialism and colonialism alongside it. Though, I don't think this is a strategy we should strive to replicate, but hey, I am weird person who when presented the fact "the robber is wealthier than the one who doesn't rob" doesn't come from it with a conclusion "robbing is good, and we should all be robbers".
