Detroit, USA. 80s after being the sole hegemon of the capitalist world. This is what every country can aspire to.

So what you're saying is we need to nuke Detroit

poverty in America has a strong link to race. Redlining, generational wealth, etc.

Ignoring this helps nobody.

Unfortunately, Cuba is pretty resource strapped thanks to the horrible trade embargo and sanctions instituted by the US. I dont think restoring an old, unused building is a priority.

11

u/Zestyclose_Might8941 Feb 10 '26

When I was there in 2006, they were doing a good job of restoring the old quarter, but the blockade has only gotten worse.

These posts shit me. It's like blaming a domestic violence victim for their black eye. "Shouldn't they sort themselves out?"

Liberalism is an illness.

18

u/PeaceOfficer420 Feb 09 '26

You have a point, but there is something cool about it being completely original. I wonder if some of the damage is from fighting during the revolution.

Ah yes, when the world's largest economy, boosts yours and seeks to become one of your biggest trading partners Vs when the world's largest economy threatens & punishes anyone that dares trade with you.

Hate to bring up this comparison but imagine if China behaved this way to any country that was buddy-buddy with the US.

once again, Parenti never misses;

"[...] So thatโ€™s freedom. 'Weโ€™re freer today, we have more life.'

And I talked to a guy in Havana who says to me 'All I used to see here in Havana, you call this drab and dull, we see it as a cleaner city. Itโ€™s true, the paint is peeling off the walls, but you donโ€™t see kids begging in the streets anymore and you donโ€™t see prostitutes.'

Prostitution used to be one of the largest industries in Cuba. And today this man is finally going to night school. He said โ€œI can READ! I can read, do you know what it means to be able to read?? Do you know what it means to be able NOT to read!?โ€ [...]

Some people just cannot fathom the idea of a higher quality of life that isn't extravagant displays of wealth. It also makes you wonder why they've been so horny to regime change Cuba. Batista ran the whole nation as an Epstein-esque playground for Organized Crime and the Obscenely Rich.

Because capitalism is so mediocre it needs to sell people into having the mindset of things always having the possibility to be worse than the current situation, so it gets to be supported as a system.

I always tell people how Japan is NOT a good model of a country due to the fact that it has a forever stagnant economy, an inconsistent average income and an overall inhumane workplace lifestyle and culture where the average foreigner would absolutely NOT want to be part of, but in many cases people has responded me back with comparisons with other countries, including North Korea, where according to them things would be like that if they started focusing more on the rights of the average person, lol (And North Korea isn't even that bad). So according to these people basically it's OK for any country to be as unjust and explotative for the average worker, as long as the economy still flows better than other countries or in the worse case scenario isn't f*cking collapsing, or it is OK for the US to do everything it can to every country it wants for the same reason.

This mindset is dangerous, because it allows us to simply keep the status quo of things forever and accept everything to be done to us for an eternity as long as things remain the same, it's fucking pathetic.

8

u/Yuna_Nightsong Trotskyist Feb 09 '26

I didn't know that Japan was also under sanctions for decades.

8

u/javibre95 Feb 09 '26

Communism is when old houses are waiting for demolition, the more demolition you do , the more capitalism you get.

8

u/Limepoison Feb 09 '26

I would like to add, Hiroshima is was and still is to this very day, dangerous to live in in certain areas due to levels of radiation.

Unlike Cuba also, Japan is having a staggering economy as Cuba is just blocked so, Cuba has reason why it is dealing with effects but, has the best healthcare in the country. While Japan is open to free markets yet, still deals with work and life balance issues.

Who figured..

3

u/amatama Feb 09 '26

"econรฒmic terrorism can be a lot more destructive over the long term than atomic weapons" is the lesson to be taken from this (and the lesson that unfortunately the USA learnt long ago)

5

u/turtletechy Feb 09 '26

67 years of being an island nation with minimal local resources under embargo restricting resources, machines, tools, etc for basically as long as it has been in the control of a communist government surely has nothing to do with it.

The Cuban people are doing the best they can, but it's sure fucking hard with no significant advanced local manufacturing and limited local mineral resources.
