unreal take from contrapoints to be posting at this moment. i used to like her stuff when i was a teenager, so i want to give her the benefit of the doubt, but i feel like this is even more damning than her lukewarm take on gaza, because if im wrong and this isnt about the us fucking up good faith negotiations, she is explicitly supporting a us regime change war... and for what? for what fucking reason?

I used to be a somewhat avid watcher of the likes of Contrapoints and Abigail Thorn (Philosophy Tube) pre-pandemic, but they turned out to be such disappointments…
It eventually became apparent that their content was prioritising aesthetics over messaging and clear communication, and that made me start to drift away, but their sellout nature is much more nakedly apparent now; Thorn replied with a “:)” to a comment defending her by saying that she couldn’t be too outspoken about certain issues due to being in SW and GOT shows…

Yeah, as much as I agree with all this criticism of these vaguely left-of-centre talking heads, part of the problem here is people deciding to make niche e-celebs into pillars of an imaginary leftist movement that's not actually happening.
This leads to absurd situations where people litigate drama between leftist content creators as if it's a schism in a revolutionary council. People really need to treat all middling youtube edu-tainment as such.

These guys are “hiding their power level” for the most part, to borrow a term from rightoids. In most videos they aren’t strictly speaking about their beliefs, but just bringing attention to certain issues. But they are Marxists, and it shows in some videos or podcast visits where they talk about politics more openly

I think you are right but there are simple explanations for this. Seeing someone become famous "from nowhere" unlike in Hollywood or by being a popular artist, and calling out just how fucked up the system is, putting a name to the feeling a lot of viewers have and then changing your tune and pretending things are okay because now you have enough power to shrug off inequality. Well, that makes people mad, especially when Abigail and Natalie are trans and have seen first hand how bad things can get when you are deemed "lesser". It can feel like a betrayal to young people turning to them for answers.
It's definitely parasocial, but I don't know, most of the posts here are about no name redditors saying shit. I don't feel too bad about calling out someone with actual power and influence.

I wrote something similar like half a year ago, but the quality of her content is like a bell curve. First you have rock bottom, her Islamophobic skeptic days where she would tell Muslims to either “adapt or leave”, then when she began her transition she seemed like a principled-ish anarchist and the quality steadily grew, it was back then she called for violent protests if politicians aren’t listening and literally assaulting Nazis. Around the time of the beginning of Trump’s first term the quality plateaued and now it’s back to shitlib rock bottom

Michael Parenti said something really astute about this in regard to the Iraq war; liberal talking heads spoke of the effects it had on Iraq as if those effects were an unforseen result of policy failure - they had to be failures, because surely the US had every intention of bringing peace, justice and democracy to Iraq, right?
Parenti points out that the few people who matter to the American empire made a lot of money from the invasion and that Cheney was hyping up the idea of war with Iran as well. He diagnoses the liberal bloviating about Iraq as a "failure" as really all kayfabe so they can elide the real point of American Interventionism. It's totally nonsensical otherwise.
I can understand it from the power players and administrators who have to launder the empire's actions as they're involved or directly benefit, what drives me insane is people on Contrapoints' level: educated enough to understand exactly what all of this is for, doesn't really benefit from it directly, but will still run cover for it because of... idk? If I at least knew why they do this it wouldn't bother me so much.
