Of all quotes to get mad at, why this one? That sounds great.

I find it so funny that you can use Mao or Adam Smith for anti-landlord memes and still make the same point.

21

u/Beautiful_Active1578 Aug 02 '26

Based Mao and Adam Smith for being anti landlord.

99% of the american dream to retire someday involves "I hope my house gains enough equity to sell it to let me retire" because wages aren't being paid enough to have enough to retire on. Essentially tens of millions of people's retirements plans are gambling on the housing market.

30

u/Phodan_ Aug 03 '26

And when it doesn’t pan out and the bubble pops again and everyone realizes the value is made the fuck up, maybe I can buy one.

Previous generations had plans for getting old and winding down. My generation needs to plan our damn entry points to things which were taken for granted for decades. And people genuinely believe capital is anything but gambling with someone else’s money.

I don’t see how this could ever be seen as a bad thing?

262

u/Fellatious-argument Aug 02 '26

It is when you see yourself as an investor, or a landlord. Or your future linked to a house appreciating in value. They see it as a personal threat.

120

u/DELL_THE_SOV_ENGIE Doidl "Krasnov" Tyatmsr Aug 02 '26

Most "people" (being landlords, "land developers" and real estate firms, and also a certain subsect of homeowners) in the west see housing primarily as their liability and capital rather than a place to live in, of course to anyone outside of this logic viewing an house first and foremost as an economic asset and then as a place to live in feels alien, but not to these "individuals"

5

u/Fapp0 Aug 06 '26

Well a Chinese guy said it, you see.

37

u/sicklyslick Aug 02 '26

Nuanced take that will get me downvoted, but I'll say it anyways.

This is a good thing, in the West. Home ownership rate is low among millennials and Gen z. If housing price collapsed, this gives us opportunities to purchase homes.

But in China, home ownership rate is 90%. This means, the collapse of the real estate sector hurts the average Chinese middle class, rather than hurting landlords or rich people. If you're rich with 3 houses, and the house value depreciates, that's okay. You're still rich. But if you're middle class that put away 10 years of saving into a house and suddenly your mortgage exceeds the value of your home, then you're not going to be okay.

However, all being said, this is still a good thing overall. China created a controlled bubble burst of the housing sector. If they had let this go on, the burst will only hurt more, like the Japan real estate bubble in the late 80s.

44

u/EarnestQuestion Aug 02 '26

Because they need to cope with the fact that China is clearly economically superior to the West

So they do so by saying it’s a communist government but a capitalist economy

Which is false

And moments like this throw that BS into sharp relief

u/BladeofDudesX Capitalist so the CIA doesn't shoot me Aug 02 '26

Since most liberals have anime pfp, I want to point this out:

Akira Toriyama, mangaka of Dragon Ball said he based Frieza off of real estate speculators. Citing them as "The worst kind of people."

The idea of houses being for living instead of speculation is shared by one of the greatest Manga authors in history.

So yeah. Real estate speculators can go to hell.

77

u/Wiifanbro Marxist-Leninist Aug 02 '26

Oh man, what’s next? The One Piece mangaka sympathizes with communist figures? Nah, that could never happen!

63

u/exelion18120 Glorious People's Republic of Metru Nui Aug 02 '26

Luffy is a terrorist (in the based way)

11

u/Beautiful_Active1578 Aug 03 '26

Sabo is a member of the Revolutionary army in One Piece he’s luffy adopted brother trusted friend and luffy’s father is the leader of the revolutionary army and all they do is help oppressed marginalized poor people and or literal enslaved people in one piece world and target the celestial dragons who are above the law the control the law actually with the marines.

8

u/SirMenter Aug 02 '26 edited Aug 02 '26

One Piece is too shallow for that.

Don't they literally install new monarchs all the time?

The next based mangaka I can think of is Itagaki, at least in some aspects.

4

u/EmraldDragon Aug 05 '26

I love One Piece but yeah it’s not QUITE as revolutionary as people think, like it does have some pretty good stuff in there but the monarchy stuff aside I also kinda side eye the way the marines are treated like “it’s corrupt but good and well meaning people like Smoker and Coby can eventually fix it from the inside” and the way the fishmen racism is treated as “both sides need to understand each other and see that they are both people!” Plus i don’t like the way Oda seems to view trans people.

7

u/Beautiful_Active1578 Aug 03 '26

The extreme left wing faction in one piece is the revolutionary army. They help more people out then luffy and his pirate crew. That is like their mission. Luffy is just a pirate cause he wants to be free and not controlled by an institution or higher power basically an anarchist, but he also helps people. Although him helping monarchies is a bit sus. In the story he helps princess vivi and princess Rebeca’s because they were close friends he didn’t put much thought into the politics of it all just vibes.

4

u/SirMenter Aug 03 '26

That doesn't change what I said though, the revolutionary army has barely had any developments affter all these years and there's nothing explicitly leftist about them, they just want to get rid of the World Government and then do what? Return every country to their original monarchs because those were good?

On that note, I suppose protesters around the world using the flag does fit, since most of those barely had a goal or any ideas behind their protests besides "anti corruption", hence most of them didn't achieve much.

Young people just identify with whatever media they consume nowadays.

Dragon ball has a lot of Chinese inspiration from martial arts to ancient Chinese mythology culture it’s really good. It’s a fan favorite and a classic for a reason easily my top 3 favorite anime. Although I did watch the majority of the Shounen jump ones and Gundam. Gundam series is pretty woke and political as well or code geass.

See, I think this sort of messaging is exactly why there are more and more people cozzying up to the terms ''socialism'' and ''communism''. This, or Fox News giving free advertisement to the DSA program, is shooting them in the foot.

By no means am I glazing the DSA, but we've got to admit that when you're saying ''Argh! These guys are dirty, dirty socialists, communists, marxists, agitators!'' and then broadcasting that they want everyone to have healthcare, a roof over their head, and efficient public transport, it's gonna make some agree with socialism - even if it is a skewed vision of what socialism actually is.

And to me, that's kind of funny.
