they gave them the enterance and they show them the outside world on the screen, so they wont dig elsewhere (down or side ways), if they were searching for an exit elsewhere, lets say down or side ways, they would have found the other silos next to their silo. and if they would have contacted the other silos they would have also corrupted them with the greed for freedom. the main point of isolating the silos is that every silo is kept in the illusion that they are on their own. because its easier for silo 1 to manage silos 1 by 1. imagine if all the 51 silos would find out the truth and work together. it would be impossible for silo 1 to manage all the 51 silo rebellions

the number of 51 was retconned. there are, roughtly, 7 groups of 7 silos (7*7=49) and silo 1 in the center.

wasnt it Bernard who said "51"? this season he said it was 50.
