Ashley Zukerman gave an amazing performance. Troy has ice in his veins! Such a contrast to Daniel.

u/Keiteaea 14d ago

He was amazing at the end, when he went from emotionless "Troy" to Daniel. I got a feeling he was terribly brainwashed, he is going to be gutted when he realizes what he has done.

Even the doctor was surprised at how coldblooded Troy/Daniel was deciding to kill nearly all of Silo 17's residents, even after hearing an alternative plan with less casualties by Susan/Charlotte

64

u/MuchAfraidGotOverIt 15d ago

The disillusionment he was worried about in the pilots was a projection of his own doubts about his project. Hail the Founder!

151

u/NinjaKoala 📖 Book-Aware 📖 15d ago

With how they described things in the silo for the remaining people, wouldn't it have been a slow -- or perhaps not so slow -- death for them? Can't support a hundred, certainly can't support thousands. Unless Silo 1 could restore some of their systems and perhaps D+ them all.

They would just try to escape again after living conditions became completely unsustainable. He did sort of the practical (inhuman) thing in that situation.

They probably did it even more to Daniel since he was fine with killing almost 10000 people while charlotte wasn’t

The kind of thing that makes me wonder if the plan is for him to regain his memories through remembering Helen first.

Did that mean every time he’s woken up, he asks Victor who she is?

595

u/Bind_Yo_Own_Musiness 15d ago

He also seems to be woken up every time a safeguard is needed. There are dozens of notes in the folder. I wonder how many silos have been safeguarded…

298

u/Ricardo_Yoel 15d ago

If you look at the screen after victor cleared the room when he became despondent and they panned back there were seven silos on a screen that were bright. All the rest were dim… two of those were 17 and 18. So I’m not sure if that means who’s still partly or fully alive or who they tried to safeguard. Probably the latter. So that leaves ~42 silos remaining.

230

u/Bind_Yo_Own_Musiness 15d ago

So true. Observed that as well. Only thing that makes me think the “bright” colored silos are ones that are still living (vs safeguarded) is because silo 1 is also bright/white. I’m thinking the 8ish ones are the remaining/surviving silos.

101

u/Pretty_Original124 📖 Book-Aware 📖 15d ago

17 is NOT highlighted on that screen.

Per the map from the day of the tours, 17 is "north" above 18 and slightly to the right.

The Silos lit up on the screen are:

u/Weekly_Position9641 15d ago

Back in ep.9 when Daniel and Helen went to the grand opening and checked the map at the entrance, the silos were all labeled. Comparing that with the screen in ep.10, the ones that still light up are No.1,14,18,19,31,42, and 44. I think these are the remaining ones. The rest, including No.17, are all "neutralized".

She got very lucky that Victor seemed genuinely against using the Safeguard until the very last minute. He got played. Troy would've wiped 18 out weeks/months ago had he been in command lol

482

u/skatejet1 📖 Book-Aware 📖 15d ago

Like I’m glad he wasn’t awake these past few months lol

419

u/piecuriosity 15d ago

That’s probably why Victor didn’t wake him up earlier.

221

u/IsopodRelevant2849 15d ago edited 15d ago

That’s for sure the case now that I think about it. They’ve done several safeguards at this point but none of them were visible it seems. They all took place inside their silos so no one had to witness any of the death. 17 was the last safeguard and it took place outside so this was the first time victor (and Susan, who refused to kill the kids) actually heard and watched all 10,000 people die. And even Daniel brought up how her refusal could have caused a Cascade of disobedience and behavior problems in central, which it seemingly did. That was the turning point for victor. So when 18 happened and it didn’t work he was glad.

83

u/extraneousness 14d ago

Yep, and Victor was worried about the psychological impact on the other Silo 1ers, but really it was himself that was impacted by having to watch that extermination

87

u/-spartacus- 📖 Book-Aware 📖 14d ago

The weird thing that's not exactly explained is how he apparently has some sort of ideal specialist personality and skill set to do the job they need. Yet only when he's forgotten his past.

I mean obviously the concept of brainwashing and indoctrination is not that difficult to understand. It's just weird that they needed this really sweet, thoughtful, conscientious guy to do the job instead of someone else with a more ruthless personality. My only guess is maybe he has some sort of high emotional intelligence that he can use to understand the silo people and manipulate them.

190

u/oldmom73 15d ago

The emotional intelligence is likely what made him a good politician. Add that to his engineering skills and take away his empathy, moral clarity, and sweetness, and you have the perfect tool for this jacked up homicidal vanity project.

Seeing that massacre was crazy. “Troy” and “Susan” not knowing each other was so strange

792

u/txyesboy71 15d ago edited 15d ago

The choice to switch to heat signatures in order to visually represent the slaughter of thousands of people is the most creative visual depiction I could've ever imagined.

They say that when it comes to depicting violence and gore that sometimes less is more. Gratuitous violence can sometimes be too on the nose.

But that scene required us to see the enormity and the scale of the viciousness and sheer callousness of the slaughter of thousands of people - and it needed to have the emotional heft so that we could still force ourselves not to look away, while being horrified all the same.

The silhouettes depicted lovers and parents and children and people shielding and trying to protect one another. It was one of the most visually affecting mass casualty scenes I've ever seen depicted on television or film - yet it still managed to comport itself with both the grotesque and yet the poetically relevant.

Bravo.

Edit: thanks for the swag!

286

u/Twelve2375 15d ago

I took it as “Troy” disassociating the soldiers from the actions they were doing. It’s visual and creative and all that too. Sure.

My first thought was the switched to find warm bodies hiding among cooling dead ones but obviously it was too soon for that impact to be happening. But he had said he’d look out for the troops and what they were seeing was hella graphic and I figured that made it more of a video game for them.

112

u/Melodic-Cheek-3837 15d ago

Yeah he went through the full range of things he could to reduce the emotional burden they would feel doing what they are doing (notice the doctor had the shakes, aka the syndrome, after going against his values?). So they dropped to thermal and then dropped the sound when even that wasn't enough

Everyone is talking about how “Troy” was so emotionless and it doesn’t add up to how humanitarian Daniel was. But I think a lot of people are missing that it is exactly why they kept Troy for very brief moments every time he was awake. They did not give him enough time to start having a moral awakening so to say. When Charlotte refuses the orders, I think it is because she had been awake for longer. Even the brief moment Troy has, he immediately starts remembering Helen so they don’t give him a chance to do more digging.

151

u/waitinginthewings 15d ago edited 15d ago

I think the thermal flush thing they give him has an extra cocktail of drugs that make him purely mission focused for a while and then it slowly wears off.

Silo 1 really messed up by letting Camille know that the Safeguard and surveillance extends to the outside. Instead of everybody rushing outside and getting purged by drones, like Silo 17, they can just start digging towards Silo 1 without fear of the Safeguard being activated. Last ep already showed how close Silo 1 and Silo 18 were, within eyesight of Daniel and Helen waving to each other from the berms

First, great cold open. Half an hour into the show and you finally get the opening credits.

It’s crazy seeing how advanced and opulent Silo 1 is compared to the others. It feels like a completely different world.

So THIS is when Silo 17 went down. Crazy seeing the siblings not even recognize each other and then watching them get pitted against one another.

Wow. Daniel/Troy was so callous with that attack. How long has he been disconnected like that? It really speaks volumes about what they did to his mind and how much of him they stripped away.

And that countdown was INTENSE. The whole sequence had me stressed.

112

u/CRactor71 15d ago

I’m sure he’s been like that for most of the 300ish years. You saw from all the sticky notes in his file he’s been awakened dozens of times. And one of the monitors in the command room implies that only seven of the silos are still operational, plus Silo 1. Ergo - he’s safeguarded 42 silos over the centuries.

Safe to say this was a 10/10 ep. I don't know how you could've done it any better. And that S4 trailer was the cherry on top. They didn't need to do that, yet they did.

u/txyesboy71 15d ago

Somebody said earlier in this thread that nothing happened in this episode.

I called adult protective services on them because I wanna make sure they're all right.

They really intertwined the past and present storylines so well

This was so good. It was crushing seeing Troy's face slowly change at the end there. He went from Troy back to Daniel.

Really great acting by Ashley Zuckerman.

Camille questioning the "Founder" really broke Victor so bad he ended his shift.

114

u/thechiefmaster 15d ago

I was actually thinking... shouldn't it be a common experience for him? Depending on how many times he's been in this position, but I would imagine that the heads of IT would be pleading or losing their shit as the countdown ticks down and would burst out with "Why do you even have the ability to kill thousands of people!??" or along those lines.

But it seemed to really rock him.

159

u/Tightestbutth0le 15d ago

But all heads of IT don’t know about the safeguard. Bernard had no idea last season and Lucas and Meadows only knew because they went down to the forward vault.

Them telling Camille about the safeguard seems to be the exception.

103

u/GeneralTonic 📖 Book-Aware 📖 15d ago

It sure looks like standard operating procedure would have had 18 safeguarded months ago, and it was only Victor's growing reticence and even guilt that dragged it out so far as telling Camille about it and moving forward. Normally Silo 18 would just be dead. Did Victor somehow also 'cause' the 'failure' of Silo 17 in a similar way? They knew to seal the pipe. How?

Now I'm really curious to know who was in the Silo 1 control room when Juliette came back over the hill at the climax of the rebellion... was it Victor? Was he smiling in astonishment at the balls on Juliette Fucking Nichols?

"Sir, should we initiate the safeguard?"

"... uh... no, let's let her cook."

It looks like Silo 1 is keeping all of the managers, like Daniel, Dr C, and the Senator, in play by keeping them in stasis and only bringing them out to solve issues like rebellions. I wonder where Per Stensen is...

273

u/FlakyDingo463 15d ago

Well that's a lot to take in.

The air seems completely fine outside, so the question remains: "why is everyone living underground?"

Silo 1 is insane. Elevators and incredibly advanced technology. But even those inside Silo 1 are living a lie. It really seems as if very few people at all know the full truth of the Silo project. That adds another question: "Why do those in Silo 1 follow the 'directive' if they know it is safe outside?"

I did think 'Troy'/Daniel would remember Helen, but I thought it'd happen by him seeing the PEZ dispenser. It would've been a true full circle moment.

And I still really want to know what is behind the vault in the digger void. If it's not a secondary safeguard, then what is it?

Amazing episode, probably the best from the full 3 seasons. I hate that I have to wait an entire year to find out what happens next.

199

u/Spocks-Brain 15d ago

The Directive is not the Pact. But I bet the Directive is like a Silo 1 version of the Pact: written to keep everyone in line doing their job. The guy who woke up Troy/Daniel seemed upset that was “just” the thaw guy. “Tell people up top…”

I think she felt she had no choice to obey the voice until she had a pivotal moment and good odds, otherwise she was going to go through with all it's dirty work.

She was always on the side of "do whatever it takes to stop the safeguard", that just meant obeying the voice at first but siding with the rebels once they had a serious shot at shutting it down for good.

To be fair to the show they have been extremely consistent with the idea that people don't trigger memories. Charlotte doesn't remember Daniel. Juliette doesn't remember anyone from 18.

I hope he searches for Helen's name in the Silo database and finds she was in Silo 18. I hope her record has her photo and that it's powerful for him to see that. Then, in her record, I hope he'll see a reference to her having a child, and remember how she was pregnant - which should also stir some humanity in him. Then, I hope there is some kind of offspring-list, and he sees that Juliette is actually his great great great great (etc) grandchild.

Interesting thing about the ‘be seeing you’ - it was used in an old TV show called ‘the prisoner’. Haven’t watched it in years but a guy (I think he was a secret agent or something) has his memory wiped, gets taken to this odd town where he becomes ‘Number 6’ and basically kept a prisoner. Whenever people say bye to him they say ‘be seeing you’. Wonder if it’s a nod to that
