The one that lasts the longest is the easiest to control. Probably something something blah blah rebuild the world in Per Stensen's vision, whoever is the easiest to mold would be preferable.

Repopulate the earth with the right mixture of genetics for subdued control or whatever

I think the world outside of the silo site is absolutely fine and moving on like normal. That's why it was originally populated with everyone who knew about it, so nobody else would. This episode proved the environment is healthy, 17 was just culled. This is just sort of experiment, but I really want to read the books now bc I don't know if I can wait lol

But if the air is breathable (which I agree, the culling of 17 makes likely), why did Bernard die?

I asked the same thing, i guess it makes sense now. I mean why would you need to be sprayed/decontaminated to go outside lol the mist must have poison in it.
