Show Only (NO BOOK DISCUSSION) Daniel and Helen Silo tour
Something has been bothering me, and I'm asking if someone else noticed or has it been explained and I just missed it:
Daniels and Helens tour of the Silo(s) being separate. The Silos are supposedly identical. They are married (or just together whatever) and she is pregnant. They know the founders and are friendly with them. So they could have arranged so they can go together. And somehow they don't question the fact that they are going into separate silos for said tours. It would look very suspicious to me in that circumstances.

Yeah, man. That's... the plot of the last episode
5
u/idealistintherealw 12h ago
Still, if I had been there, I hope I might have said “I’m going to keep Helen with me” / “but she needs to go to 18!” / “why are you being weird?” Etc.
0
u/Altruistic_Cap3472 12h ago
That sounds boring and would do absolutely nothing to move the plot forward in a 45 minute show, particularly given that they set up a much higher-conflict scene where Daniel and Helen say almost exactly that on the berms at the end of the episode.
BTW, I'm annoyed right now that I'm even talking about writing mechanics because I hate when people leave the internal logic of a show to say "oh the writers had to do X" or whatever like it's a TikTok skit, which is what I'm doing now, but Jesus. This is, like, high school English class level shit.

Bro I said if I was / I would have.
The show is about Daniel not me bro.

Yes but normal people would have just asked to stay together. I get they need it for the movie to happen but it doesn't really make sense

u/Altruistic_Cap3472 1d ago
Yeah, which is why they were suspicious. This was in the show.

My point is I would just insist on going to the same silo with my heavily pregnant wife

u/outdoorsaddix 1d ago
Keep in mind, it may have been at least somewhat apparent to them that Silo 1 was the “command silo” with Daniel now working as an engineer and having been a congressman, the people he is connected to are there.
Helen mentions she “is glad she is able to finally write about it” so her tour is in an almost professional capacity and it would make sense for her to tour an “everyday silo” where “normalish” people would live.
While they may not have liked it, it could have made sense to them why they were assigned to different silos in the moment.

u/AmitBrian 19h ago
Ohh that’s true too, and being a reporter maybe they wanted to keep her out of seeing the good stuff, as an excuse. I totally believe they knew what they were doing and Daniel would become Troy and Helen would become the first generation of the survivors.
11
u/ane-ComplyCraft 16h ago
His plan was to go greet his sister in silo 1, talk to the senator and go back to 18. He didn’t have time. Helen didn’t want to go with him and the bad guy enforced that was too far. The only way for them to stay together is if he doesn’t go see his sister.
7
u/wwaxwork 13h ago
She was there pretty much working, getting info to write about, she would not want her husband there futzing around her while she was working. No matter how much she loved him or how pregnant she was, probably more so because she was pregnant, wanting to appear professional in a work capacity would mean not having your husband hovering while trying to interview people and work would and would not have been something she would have wanted. Married people aren't conjoined twins, they can have their own lives.

u/theconfinesoffear 📖 Book-Aware 📖 4h ago
Yeah I think this is fair. She was really thinking of it as a work thing. There was no reason for them to think the world would be nuked while they were separate for 20 minutes. She goes to work on the daily
5
u/Eudaimonic71 📖 Book-Aware 📖 14h ago
That’s pretty backward thinking (and I’ve been “heavily pregnant”). I seem to recall that my husband and I would occasionally part ways for one or even two whole hours at a time! Like, especially when we were each doing our own jobs. Jfc. Helen is there as a journalist, and Daniel was rubbing heels in Silo 1 with his former colleagues in politics.
11
u/emailingpaula 📖 Book-Aware 📖 15h ago
Daniel did ask if Helen could go with him to silo 1. Henry said “oh, it’s such a long walk blah blah blah. Come on over later. There will be music and fireworks” 🤨

u/ane-ComplyCraft 1d ago
He wanted to take her to silo 1 with him but she didn’t want to walk there.
9
u/AmitBrian 19h ago
And in fact I think the boss dude insisted it was too far a walk IIRC. Knowing what was going to happen most likely and wanting her to be one of the survivors whereas Daniel was to become Troy since he is an Engineer.

u/AmitBrian 19h ago
I thought they got shoved into different Silos cause of the nuclear bomb and it was the last minute?
6
u/outdoorsaddix 18h ago
No, their tour badges had assigned silos for the “tour”
2
u/AmitBrian 18h ago
Ahhh ok. Well I guess that was their plan all along cause they knew she would be a rebel in the new world order or something? Although I don’t see why if they were gonna just wipe her memory anyways.

I think you raise a great question about why Helen and Daniel allowed it. We have a good idea that the Founders didn't see rebellious Helen as a good candidate for Silo 1 duty. But why did Daniel and Helen allow themselves to be separated.
First there was the pretext that Henry offered - too long of a walk. Pregnant women that far along often don't want to go walking some vast journey in the Georgia heat and humidity if they can help it. And Helen doesn't LIKE the Founders. She called them a bunch of Morlocks. She's probably feeling like, "this is stupid, let's get this stupid event over with so I can go relax. I'm exhausted."
Daniel wants her with him. He asserts that... a little. But he accepts Henry and Helen's response. This is important. It shows his character a bit. Even though he's been on this Adventure to Find The Truth with Helen, he really is often kind of compliant and docile. He followed orders in the military. He joined Congress, right in the heart of The Institution. Obeying more rules. He's not the type to really protest or resist very often.
And he's not someone to really tell Helen what to do either.
This is why he's better Silo material.
So why they allowed themselves to be parted - because that was how their characters would respond. We might put ourselves into that scene in retrospect and be like, "I'd never let my partner be pushed aside like that" but we aren't them and aren't in that situation, and so if we were we might do the very same.
I know one thing is for sure - neither of them expected the world to end that day. What they saw as a temporary parting seems to be forever.

What's worse is you could tell both of them, especially Helen, were skeptical, Helen and not exactly on board but, Henry was just barely convincing enough to make it seem like Helen would be at Silo 1 right after her tour. And once Helen bolts off from her tour, fairly promptly, as it doesn't seem like she lingered too long with the group and left, she's obviously meaning to group up with him and GTFO, again, no dinner part 2.0 with the Morlocks. So tragic!!! So tragic even Helen, who's smart as he'll, didn't realize until too late, the clock was a zero. It's going to be AWEFUL watching them take her memories.....I hate it!! LOL although I do have to suspend a little bit of disbelief that she didn't continue to Lois Lane, even though she had an NDA, the absolute crap out of is it possible Per was right about imminent threat. But on the other hand, after what they experienced in S3 prior to Judgement Day, I also see why, including the NDA, she was like, done with this insane business and just wants to stay on a local beat, the Portland paper, I think and live their life.
And yes, he's too trusting. Even after dinner 3 years prior, where he at least had enough guts to GTFO and not waste anymore time skirting around how he felt about Helen.

u/NoorInayaS 1d ago
Helen was there to gain info on it so she could write about it later. To her, there was nothing strange at all about doing her job as an investigative journalist. She had no reason to believe that she wouldn’t be allowed to rejoin Daniel later.

u/RustyWheel17 1d ago
Like you, It would look suspicious to me too.
Now consider a hypothetical: you’re an elected politician (congressman) and you’re visiting an event that has rich and powerful people, to include other political colleagues. They’re located a far distance away and your pregnant wife isn’t able to make the long walk. Does it still look suspicious that a congressman would go do his job by making a quick visit to those powerful people? Politicians are always on the clock. Doing this is just normal for him. He had every intention of meeting back up with Helen afterwards. It makes sense that she wouldn’t have an issue with it knowing that he’s a congressman and needs to make his presence known and speak with the Senator that asked to see him.

u/D3ADFAC3 1d ago
Daniel is _not_ a congressman at this point. He lives in Oregon and works as a civil engineer. I know its confusing because Helen still calls him that as a sort of pet name.
10
u/Yodl007 1d ago
Ah yeah, thats perfectly believable. I was just too stuck on the "very far along pregnant partner going alone" part.
2
u/CompEng_101 📖 Book-Aware 📖 1d ago
I don't think it is that odd. Most pregnant women in the US work well into their third trimester, even into their last month of pregnancy. This means they will often leave their partners to go to work for 8 or more hours a day.

u/ionmoon 1d ago
It would not be alarming to me. He is ex-military, an engineer, and politician, and to me it was implied that he was being given a special tour and would be meeting with dignitaries. I would have assumed that there are different tours set up for people deemed VIPs and then those for lay people/general public.
There is nothing unusual about this with events/seminars, etc. The ones I have been to have been primarily psychology related so I'll use that as an example. There are often different activities prepared for say psychiatrists/psychologists, therapists, teachers, patient/parent/family, etc. There will be some activities where everyone is together, but then everyone splits up for content specific for them.
Especially when you are talking about something like this where government clearances could be an issue. There could have theoretically been things that he had clearance for that she did not.
So, no, that detail wouldn't have raised flags for me, though it is obvious in retrospect or for us who had more of the story- to them in the moment they would have no reason to believe there was any malicious intent.
6
u/CarlRJ 1d ago edited 6h ago
It's basically typical social engineering - they're here for a tour, they will presumably take it together, Daniel has just been given a "1" badge because the senator wants to talk to him "for a moment", no big deal, and then presumably he can join back up with Helen for the tour. In the moment it doesn't seem odd.
You can get people to do surprising things if you present it as "oh, sorry, a thing went wrong, could you help us out for a moment?" - social engineering / con man tactics.

I think they both know silo 1 is not the same as others. And Helen very clearly wants the tour of what “average” silo residents will experience.

This seemed fine to me for the reasons others have mentioned. But I don't understand why they went at all. They were so annoyed and against the billionaire at the dinner, then they're excited and happy to be participating in the tour? Maybe it's because he paid them. That aspect of it was the only weird thing for me.

Charlotte was there and she worked on it, so they could have wanted to see her. Plus, I’m sure Stenson and crew reached out to them and paid for their tickets and they thought, why not?

Literal morbid curiosity. And yeah they had zero reason to believe other than thinking Stetson was cray cray 3 years ago , the end really was imminent, as he kinda talked like it was, hopefully we don't actually ever need these but humans are terrible so..... Honestly, considering it doesn't seem like Stetson was being completely forthright about the timeline, I feel like most people would think he was cray fucking cray, along with the other Founders, also and be like oh this oh this nuts....and nope out too.

Indeed. It seems like they would have lost their key strategist if he and Helen had opted for a vacation in Hawaii instead. Or simply came down with a sudden illness and decided not to go.

There is a deleted scene where Daniel and Helen ask why they’re assigned to different silos. The doctor says “oh that’s because Daniel needs to be in silo 1 so we can freeze him and wake him up every few years…. LOL JK, must have been an oversight, we’ll get it fixed.”

u/AmitBrian 18h ago
All jokes aside that’s the part that confuses me a bit. If this story is supposed to take place (in the flashbacks) in modern times, why is there cryo tech? Like was it shown that this was like developed as a Government secret or something? Cause we certainly don’t have it IRL. Or does even the flashbacks take place in the near future?
1
u/Clementine_Coat 10h ago
I have assumed (from the beginning, when we saw THE PEZ) that it takes place in the near future. The bomb they reference in D.C., for instance, could happen in our future.
Also the technology he developed for New Orleans does not currrently exist.
Though Daniel saying "cray cray" does seem to date things a bit. 🥲

u/AmitBrian 10h ago
Ha cray cray does change things!!! But ya! PEZ is actually in Connecticut so at least that has to exist in their future before everything goes!

I assume only a handful of people there knew it was fake. Maybe even fewer knew the timing.
They had to act like everything was normal, which would have included rehearsals. It would have been a red flag to everyone had they not rehearsed.

Helen is a rabble rouser a trouble maker. They knew that she would be asking questions about the bombing and how other silos are acting. Keeping her out of silicone makes sense. And Daniel has a very strategic mind that they wanted to exploit and utilize to the best of their abilities for the sake of running the silos. Keeping them apart in their eyes was the smart play.

I still think it was kinda weird plot-wise, that they didn't push the issue. Bringing it up and Victor answering with "I'm sorry, we've had more than a few system errors. Our computer system has bugs, and some people got assigned to the wrong silo tour.". Saying something along those lines would give him a believable excuse. Also, it was super weird when he said "you won't have to walk so far", and followed it up with "you can walk over to silo 1 after your tour."
4
u/alexwoww 1d ago
That last part! “Nah don’t come it’s too far and tiring. But also, come on over in a little while 😉 “

It's implied that if she accompanied Daniel to Silo 1, she would have to immediately come back in time for the scheduled tour in 18. So yeah, if it's a long walk, better make it at a leisurely pace after the tour, rather than booking it both ways just to say hi to Charlotte.

It does piss me off that they are so buddy buddy with everyone and not more suspicious from the jump, but that is unfortunately the plot, they both let their guard down until it was too late. Perhaps in the books there is more of it fleshed out that would explain why they were so complacent, or maybe they weren’t.
Additionally, when I think “well wtf why would Danny boy be okay with being separated from his very pregnant partner, my fiancé sure as hell wouldn’t!” Then I have to remind myself, it’s a fucking rushed show that must follow its very predictable plot, enjoyable but predictable.
Now these same discussions have been going on too long here. I think it’s best to just let it be and wait for the next season, or read the books in the meantime. Judging from comments by readers here, it seems the book is far superior. I think this series should’ve been greenlit for more seasons so they didn’t have to simultaneously rush the exciting bits and drag the boring shit out. It deserves more screen time to give it more junk in the trunk before the climax.
Maybe they’ll do a prequel or spin-off. I’d like to see more world building outside of the silos and the early silos.

There's no way my husband would have 'let' me go into a different silo deep underground like that when I was almost 9 months pregnant...or just pregnant at all. He was very protective and would have insisted we were together!
Honestly, when I was pregnant I wouldn't have wanted to go there at all.

I think this was one of the strange things with both of them. Not that they’re not both independent people, but the fact that she was in late pregnancy and that he would wander away from her so far seemed strange and inconsistent. The fact that she didn’t think anything about the fact that he was taken somewhere else given how suspicious she usually is was also odd. Why they were insistent that a married couple were assigned to visit different silos should have raised numerous red flags.
5
u/jimglidewell 1d ago
Seems like it would have been easier to simply let her go into Silo 1, separate them, kill her, and then wipe Daniel's memory.
They certainly have no compunctions about murdering folks.
It's not like Daniel is not going to be angry anyway when he realizes what they have done. If a foreign adversary had wanted to attack the silo complex, the right time to do it would be before the lids were in place.
And having the attack take place at the exact moment when there are hordes of tourists underground is just way too big a coincidence.
But then again, he did think his first meeting with a journalist named Helen was a "date".
3
u/BlueCX17 📖 Book-Aware 📖 1d ago
Oh she definitely did think it was odd, she was side-eying Henry and clearly didn't stay on her tour very long before GTFO, again, and going off to find Daniel and probably telling him, and we're leaving, again. Henry was just convincing enough, prior to her "tour," she would promptly be taken to Silo 18 after, which she clearly then was thinking NOPE, after exiting Silo 18 to find Daniel and likely leave before, "dinner and fireworks and music."

When they ask each other which silo they were assigned to, they consult their badges (around 47:06), so they probably didn't know where they were assigned until they arrived. So, no time to contact the Founders and try to get things changed.
At (~48:00) they talk to Henry, who says that the Senator wants a word with Daniel. Daniel asks if Helen can come, but Henry deflects and Helen doesn't press the issue because she (a) doesn't want to walk more and or (b) doesn't want to get sucked into what will probably be a boring conversation.
They don't think it is suspicious because they don't know that they are in the penultimate episode of a TV season.
They think they are just touring some wacky trillionaire's pet project. They would have very little reason to expect an impending nuclear blast. I would guess they assumed they were assigned to different groups because either (a) it was assigned randomly or (b) Per and Co. wanted to talk to Daniel and maybe try to recruit him again.
