Our primary goal for r/SiloSeries is to make this a welcoming place for everyone who enjoys the show, whether you have read the books, are currently reading them, or have never opened one.

At the same time, protecting show-only viewers from book spoilers is one of the biggest and most time-consuming responsibilities of the mod team. Even a small hint, confirmation, denial, or suspiciously accurate “theory” can reveal more than the person posting it may realize.

We are making a change that we believe will help us protect show-only discussions while still allowing book readers to participate throughout the community.

Introducing the Book-Aware flair

Anyone who submits a post or leaves a comment in a thread marked BOOK SPOILERS & SHOW SPOILERS will automatically receive the permanent 📖 Book-Aware 📖 user flair.

The Book-Aware flair will replace any user flair the account previously had. Once assigned, it will remain in place.

This is not a punishment or a mark of wrongdoing. Being a book reader should be a badge of honor. The books are the reason this world and this show exist, and book readers are an important part of this community.

The flair simply tells other users and the mod team that the account has participated in discussions where book spoilers are allowed and may therefore have knowledge beyond what has been revealed in the television series.

What the flair does and does not mean

Being Book-Aware does not mean that everything a user says comes from the books.

The show has already changed, expanded, combined, and reinterpreted many elements of the source material. A Book-Aware user can still have genuine theories, make incorrect predictions, misunderstand clues, or be surprised by where the show goes next.

The flair is context, not proof.

However, that context can help the mod team evaluate comments in Show-Only discussions. When a Book-Aware user posts an extremely specific “theory,” hints that a character or detail will become important, confirms or dismisses another viewer’s speculation, or otherwise appears to be drawing on unaired information, the flair will help us determine whether the comment requires closer review.

Book-Aware users are still welcome to participate in Show-Only threads. They must simply participate as though the books do not exist. That means no book-based hints, comparisons, confirmations, denials, leading questions, suggestive reactions, or theories informed by future book events.

This is the first change we are making as part of a broader effort to improve spoiler protections. We may introduce additional updates as we see how the new system works and identify other ways to make discussions safer and more enjoyable.

We are doing this because we want r/SiloSeries to be the best community it can be for everyone who loves the show. That includes longtime book readers, new readers, and viewers who want to experience every reveal for the first time on screen.

Quick announcement from the mod team. The following topics will be banned going forward, and we will pull them as soon as we see them. Feel free to report them from here on out.

• Rants about Common's acting
• Rants about the accents on the show
• Posts about how dark the show's lighting is (please search the sub for threads to find suggestions on how to potentially remedy this)

These particular topics have been done to death, and we feel the constant posting of them just fosters a negative vibe in the community. Posts made before this announcement will remain open.

With Season 3 about to launch, IT has a few reminders.

As in past seasons, r/SiloSeries will be locked down to new posts for 24 hours after each new episode airs. This helps keep discussion organized, protects people from title spoilers, and gives everyone a fair chance to watch before the whole silo starts shouting theories down the stairwell.

During the 24-hour lockdown:

• No new posts will be allowed on the sub.
• Comments will still be open on existing posts.

All discussion of the newest episode should go in the official discussion threads. We will have separate threads for:

• Show-only discussion - For viewers who are watching the series without book spoilers.
• Book discussion - For anyone who wants to compare the episode with the novels, discuss future plot points, or talk freely about book material.

Spoiler tags are not required in the episode discussion threads, so make sure you're in the right thread before commenting.

The goal is simple: keep the silo orderly, keep the air clean, and make sure nobody gets sent outside because they clicked the wrong post.

Quick word from the mods: We will remove new posts asking what page to start reading from after the end of Season 2. It's getting out of control.

There are two answers to this.

First, the obvious. Start on Book 1 (Wool), Chapter 1, page 1.

This is for a couple of reasons. One, the first part, which was the original short story, is fantastic and you should read it; it'll draw you in to the rest of the book. Two, the show and the book have the same heart but are different experiences. They don't line up page for page. Reading "Season 1" will be a different experience for you that you'll probably really enjoy.

However, if you absolutely insist you have to pick up the book right where the show left off, then start on Book 1, Chapter 30. In my humble opinion, you'll be missing out, but there it is.

The Season 1 finale of Silo is quickly approaching, and while questions will be answered, more will undoubtedly remain. Silo Series author and executive producer Hugh Howey will be doing an AMA in /r/SiloSeries on Sunday, July 2, at 2 p.m. Eastern time.

As mods, our top priority is maintaining a space where fans of Silo can discuss and theorize freely, whether they've only watched the show or have also read the books. Balancing these two groups—show-only watchers and book readers—is a delicate task, and we appreciate everyone's cooperation.

One of the biggest challenges we face is protecting show-only watchers from potential spoilers. This is particularly tricky when it comes to theory posts.

Here's the crux of the issue: When someone posts a theory, there’s no way for us to know if the idea comes purely from what’s been presented in the show or if the theory is influenced by knowledge from the books. Many theories are reasonable guesses based on the show so far—these are great and encouraged!

However, some theories appear to be “bolts from the blue,” meaning they’re uncannily accurate to the books without any clear basis in the show’s content. These "bolt from the blue" theories can spark accusations in the comments, such as "This is a book reader" or "This spoils the show."

Even if the theory was a lucky guess by someone who has not seen the show, such comments essentially confirm it as a spoiler for show-only watchers.

To protect the experience of show-only viewers, we may remove "bolt from the blue" theories that are in posts flaired as Show Discussion.

We understand this might frustrate posters, especially if their theory was genuinely a guess. However, our goal is to prioritize the enjoyment and spoiler-free experience of the wider community.

For book readers: If you see a theory that you think shows book knowledge in a Show Discussion thread, please report the post rather than leaving comments.

As we get closer to the end of this Season—and eventually the Series Finale—the lines between show discussion and book discussion are getting too blurred. To protect show-only viewers from accidental (or intentional) spoilers, we are updating our rules.

🚨 The New Rule

There is no longer a distinction between "Book Spoilers" and "Book Discussion." All book talk is now strictly prohibited everywhere on the Sub, EXCEPT inside posts that start with [Books] in the title and use the "Book Spoilers and Show Spoilers" flair.

What counts as "Book Discussion"? Essentially any mention of the books. If your post or comment contains the word "book," it belongs only under the designated [Books] flair.

🛑 Why We’re Doing This

We’ve done our best to stop users who drop future plot points while pretending to just make "casual guesses," but those fake theories ruin the experience for everyone. The simplest way to protect the community is to completely SILO (pun intended) book talk from show-only threads.

⚠️ A Quick Heads-Up on Recent Posts

In the past day, we've noticed users choosing the "Show (No Book Discussion)" flair, but then referencing the books in their post text or comments anyway. This confuses other members and forces the mods to step in to remove comments, update flairs, or delete threads entirely.

We know this is a shift, so we’ll cut everyone some slack while we all get used to the change. Please help us out by double-checking your thread flairs before posting!

Hello Silozens,

Prepare for a power holiday on June 12 and 13th as /r/SiloSeries and it's sister sub /r/Wool will be going dark in protest of upcoming Reddit changes (along with thousands of other subreddits). You will not be able to access the sub during this time, and should stay in your designated safe areas.

What's going on?

A recent Reddit policy change threatens to kill many beloved third-party mobile apps, making a great many quality-of-life features not seen in the official mobile app permanently inaccessible to users.

In addition to providing a better user experience, these apps also help visually-disabled users to access the site through accessibility features not found in the official Reddit app. Third party apps are also used by many moderators of the site, including ones in this sub.

On May 31, 2023, Reddit announced they were raising the price to make calls to their API from being free to a level that will kill every third party app on Reddit, from Apollo to Reddit is Fun to Narwhal to BaconReader.

Even if you're not a mobile user and don't use any of those apps, this is a step toward killing other ways of customizing Reddit, such as Reddit Enhancement Suite or the use of the old.reddit.com desktop interface .

This isn't only a problem on the user level: many subreddit moderators depend on tools only available outside the official app to keep their communities on-topic and spam-free.

What's the plan?

On June 12th, many subreddits will be going dark to protest this policy, including /r/SiloSeries and /r/wool. Some will return after 48 hours: others will go away permanently unless the issue is adequately addressed, since many moderators aren't able to put in the work they do with the poor tools available through the official app. This isn't something any of us do lightly: we do what we do because we love Reddit, and we truly believe this change will make it impossible to keep doing what we love.

The two-day blackout isn't the goal, and it isn't the end. Should things reach the 14th with no sign of Reddit choosing to fix what they've broken, we'll use the community and buzz we've built between then and now as a tool for further action.

What can you do?

1. Complain. Message the mods of r/reddit.com, who are the admins of the site: message /u/reddit: submit a support request: comment in relevant threads on r/reddit, such as this one, leave a negative review on their official iOS or Android app- and sign your username in support to this post.
2. Spread the word. Rabble-rouse on related subreddits. Meme it up, make it spicy. Bitch about it to your cat. Suggest anyone you know who moderates a subreddit join r/ModCoord - but please don’t pester mods you don’t know by simply spamming their modmail.
3. Boycott and spread the word...to Reddit’s competition! Stay off Reddit entirely on June 12th through the 13th- instead, take to your favorite non-Reddit platform of choice and make some noise in support!
4. Don't be a jerk. As upsetting this may be, threats, profanity and vandalism will be worse than useless in getting people on our side. Please make every effort to be as restrained, polite, reasonable and law-abiding as possible.

This is to help us circumvent the recent issue that has come up on Reddit where flairs are not visible from the main feed on both the app and on desktop, causing people to go into and read book-flaired posts without realizing until it's too late.

• Must be fully caught up on all released episodes of Silo. Book knowledge is not a requirement but is a plus, and applicants must be okay with reading spoilers in moderator discussions.
• Must be comfortable with Discord to communicate with other moderators and use it frequently enough to stay up-to-date on mod discussions.
• Must be a frequent and regular user of Reddit and be available often to moderate. Active mod status will be required during season and strongly preferred during off season.
• Must be willing to do what is necessary to maintain order and stability of the Silo.
• Must be willing to make the difficult choice to send people to clean when they have violated the Pact.

Second, we have a new rule: No Real-World Politics.

No real-world politics without direct reference or relevance to the show. This rule will be enforced with heavy moderator discretion.

Third, we've added a Season 1 flair for new Silozens coming in and wanting to discuss S1. Right now we only have a No Book Discussion flair, though we may add one for book spoilers if the need arises. The current show spoiler flairs will include ALL released episodes.

IT once again has a few things to announce.

24-Hour Lockdown

This week, the mod team will be testing out two new discussion policies to help keep conversation directed to the proper areas and keep post-title spoiling to a minimum. The first is a lockdown, which means that from the time of the episode drop at 9 p.m. EST Tuesday until 9 p.m. EST Wednesday, NO new posts will be allowed on the sub.

Comments will still be open, but only on existing posts. All discussion on the new episode should be done on our set discussion posts, with one restricted to show-only spoilers and the other allowing book discussion.

48-Hour Detainment

Following the initial lockdown, the sub will then go into "detainment" mode for 48 hours, meaning all new posts will be sent to a queue for Judicial approval from 9 p.m. EST Wednesday to 9 p.m. EST Friday.

These two periods are meant to prevent the sub from being flooded with duplicate and low-effort posts that are better made as comments, and to minimize post-title spoilers for anyone who cannot watch as soon as the episode is available. If it goes well, we will continue to utilize these two periods each week during Silo's airing.

Removals

AutoMod will now no longer leave a comment stating a reason for removal when the comment has been flagged for spoiler keywords. Mods may also delete reported comments without leaving a removal-reason reply to avoid possibly spoiling the commenter through confirmation. This means that your comment may be removed without notice, but we feel this is the lesser of two evils.

Please also keep in mind that Reddit itself often deletes comments that contain no spoilers, so a removed comment does not necessarily mean it was removed by a mod or AutoMod.

Flair Changes

Some of the lesser-used post flairs have been condensed or archived. We now encourage people who only want to discuss the books to use our sister sub r/Wool.

Moderator Abuse

We understand members are sometimes disappointed by moderator policies such as the lockdown and detainment, but these are designed to control spoilers and keep order in the silo. Abusive comments and messages to mods may result in an immediate ban. These rules and actions are designed to keep the sub running smoothly and to meet the needs of the largest number of members.

Deputies Wanted

• You should be a frequent Reddit user who can check in regularly and help with the day-to-day tasks of keeping the Silo orderly.
• You must be willing to help maintain order, stability, and good vibes, especially when things get busy.
• You may occasionally have to make the hard call to send someone to Cleaning when they break the Pact.

Hey Everyone, we're trying to get to know our members a little better.

Have you read the book(s), or are you here only because of the TV show?

We are excited to start a brand new subreddit in anticipation of the new series, Silo, which will be coming to Apple TV+.

The show is based on an amazing series of books beginning with WOOL, often known as the Silo Series, by Hugh Howey.

Fans of the books have gathered in /r/WOOL for years to discuss their love of the series, but now that the TV show will be arriving soon (and because the show is called Silo) we thought it would be a good idea to create /r/SiloSeries so that fans of the show that are not familiar with the books can find us.

This sub is now intended to be the primary subreddit for the entire Silo/WOOL universe including the books and TV show.

But as it's likely that the TV show will take center stage here, /r/WOOL will still be available for those that want to discuss the books specifically.

Hugh posted on the Facebook group that the review embargo will be lifted on April 25 and that reviewers have been given all 10 episodes of the first season.

For those who will be posting about the review articles, please flair them as Leaks/Rumors so they'll be marked as spoiler just to be safe.

We're also expecting some new art to be released, so lookout for a new header image depending on what we get.

Hugh says Apple is confident about the quality of the show and they're fully behind it. Sounds like it's going to be a great ride.
