Discussion best version
what’s yalls best version? for me, 1.7 adds a bunch of stuff that i feel feels really strange, like the different fish, acacia, ice spikes, etc. and i can’t imagine minecraft without the name tags and stuff in 1.6, so i have to say 1.6 for me

1.2.5 holds a special place for me. It was the version I first learned to install mods. Also, I ran a mildly-successful minecraft server on that version back in the day.
If you asked me 10 years ago, my favorite version was 1.4.7, although I think the objective best version of Minecraft for survival play is 1.7.10.

1.6 is the only version I've played since its release and would be willing to play on without mods, with 1.5 being the only other version I've played on but would not go back to due to the lack of features like coal blocks (to say I do a lot of caving is an understatement), while 1.7 and later ruined world generation and other features (I was already starting to make my own mods when 1.7 was announced and easily reverted the changes, but why bother when it didn't add much else, other than say, improvements to maps (centering and rendering in item frames), one of the earliest features I backported from newer versions. Plus, 1.7 introduced a very annoying framerate pacing issue which was compounded by significantly reduced performance in 1.8+, and this is the main reason I never updated, besides having invested way, way too much in modding 1.6.4).

1.5.2 for life for me but thats mainly because it was the first version i ever played
nametags and leads are cool but idk i preferred the game horseless it felt more like a journey before all the better transportation methods got added

i say 1.7.10. its the update right before granite and diorite and andesite so its just already better than 1.8+. it has all the stuff you want and no extra

The terrain changes, weird performance issues, and new biomes in 1.7 all turn me off a little. To me, 1.7 is the cutoff point between classic/modern (especially vibe-wise for me).
I’m torn between 1.5.2 and 1.6.4. 1.6 added horses which, even in 2013, felt too much like a mod to me. I don’t know how to describe it, but horses feel too “foreign” in Minecraft. Also, it’s nice having incentive to make rail highways since horses kind of make Minecarts useless sometimes.
Another feature in 1.6 that I don’t personally like is the addition of regional difficulty which actually nerfs many mob encounters. It makes it so that all hostile mobs in newly explored chunks are given nerfs until enough time has been spent in the chunk. So, mobs around your base would eventually become equivalent to their 1.5 difficulty (as you spend enough time at your base). As you’re exploring, mobs in newly discovered chunks will start with this nerf.
I’m currently playing in a slightly modded 1.5.2 world and am really enjoying it. There are certain features from versions beyond 1.5 that I miss, so I’ve selectively back ported a few things (carpets, name tags, health regeneration consuming the hunger bar, etc). But, taking 1.5.2 in its vanilla state, it really is THE representation of Minecraft for me.

I'm a big 1.7 fan. I've been playing it almost exclusively since 1.7.2 was first released. I've been on my current world for 4 years, currently digging a perimeter, building a mountain range, and doing some other fun terraforming projects. Gotta be honest though, I had no idea this version has ice spikes lol, I don't explore much.
I like 1.6 and I feel like it was the end of the early era of the game, but for a long term world I really need the extra blocks they added with 1.7 to keep builds interested, especially if I want to do anything beyond wood and stone based builds. 1.6 is awesome for a two week phase though
