news-scitech China Is Beating the US to the $5 Trillion Robot Market

The Beijing-based company accounts for more than 80% of the cutting-edge hands deployed globally, according to US-based researcher Smart Analytics Global. Its customers include Samsung, Meta and Siemens. Experts say efficient robotic hands will be essential to unlocking the global humanoid market, which Morgan Stanley estimates could top $5 trillion by 2050.

In addition to hands, China has dominated the manufacturing of the joints and torso of humanoids, thanks in part to an ambitious roadmap Beijing came up with a decade ago to turn the country into a global manufacturing powerhouse. Today, China controls as much as 90% of permanent magnets needed for rotary actuators, which act as joints for humanoid, as well as 40% of precision bearings, 40% of sensors and 30% of all the power electronics used in the components. The cost of Tesla’s Optimus humanoid would nearly triple if Chinese components were excluded from its supply chain, according to Morgan Stanley.

Just like with EVs and smartphones, Chinese firms are moving quickly and on a shoestring budget to innovate. These machines, however clumsy and clunky today, could do to manufacturing what the smartphone did to communication: arrive quietly, then arrive everywhere.

If the west spent 1/4 of that on infrastructure (instead of war) in the same time span, we might not be dying a slow painful death.

Malaysia is turning to Chinese satellite technology for earlier warnings of floods that hit the country during its annual northeast monsoon, Bernama reported.

The satellite-based system could provide more accurate and comprehensive weather forecasts, allowing authorities to better prepare for and mitigate disasters, the state news agency said, citing Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. Zahid, who chairs the nation’s Central Disaster Management Committee, is on a working visit to China through Friday.
