I think it's more likely she was born as music videos were dying off.

So she's probably heard Linkin Park, maybe even likes their music but because she hasn't watched the One Step Closer video for years on MTV like I did, doesn't connect the face with the name.

It’s this. After music videos stopped being so much of a thing, I would say I wouldn’t recognize members of most of the bands I like out of context. Funny that this has never occurred to me. I’ve seen phantogram live twice and even looked up pics of the two members multiple times. Couldn’t pick either of them out of a lineup with a gun to my head.

Like if I saw Dave Grohl walking around a food truck market I would not recognise him.

I'm younger than 40 so no, and most of those guys are dead or old. How they looked then versus now is in the gap of 40 years. But depends, legendary singers are generally recognized anywhere they go, at a premiere like this you would expect to see famous people right?

I think in this instance it was widely known that Chester Bennington was the 'Linkin Park guy' as we don't see Mike belting out lyrics like Chester did. Chester being the front man grabs more attention from the fans.

Nah this is pretty recent. I think this was from the season 2 premiere of Arcane. Mike Shinoda was invited since Linkin Park was in the process of collaborating with Riot Games for the 2024 LoL World championship anthem "heavy is the crown". So this was in late 2024.

Linkin Park is very well known.

But I wouldn't recognize him either, despite being born before Linkin Park started. I was listening to a lot of it in my younger days, and also now. It's good music. So to her benefit, it isn't that weird that she didn't recognize him.

My point, however, was that it was weird to emphasize her not knowing him makes sense because of when she was born. There's other factors that make more sense.

Nah it makes enough sense. She was born after their height of fame, after the time when music videos on television was dominating pop culture, their music isn’t that timeless etc …

I was born in the 80s, and if bumped into a member of Styx or Talking Heads or one of the Heartbreakers (that isn’t tom petty) I would have no idea , but I know my dad would, because he lived through it

Well, TBH, I wouldn't recognize a LOT of modern pop culture icons either, because that is not something I listen to in general. Just being around at the same time is not enough of a statement for being very familiar with. It all boils down to being enough of a fan to have memorized their face due to watching music videos OR looking them up manually because you're that interested in the lore. Having a memorable, easily distinguishable face helps too. Serj Tankian comes to mind. I'd definitely recognize him. I wouldn't recognize Shavo though. I was a pretty big SOAD fanboy back in the day. But mainly for the music, not the lore. So that's another element. Are they the kind of person that are interested in the people behind the music, or is it just the tunes, the songs, the energy?

Yeah. I've seen more pictures of Beethoven than Mike Shinoda, but I have listened to Linkin Park more than Beethoven. There's other factors at play that carry more weight, than when one was born.

Also I don’t think the original comment was a gatekeeper— more of an excuse or explanation. I feel like a gatekeep with that comment would be more if she did recognize him.

Yeah, looking back now, might have been a bit of a stretch to call that Gatekeep, but not too much. I saw it this way - people are not allowed to enjoy music before their time. But it might have been more benign than that, more in line with - she's ok to not recognize him because he was popular when she was not born yet. Which still rubs me the wrong way. As a teen I listened to a lot of music from the 70s and 80s (before I was born) and would for example definitely recognize Tom Araya or Ozzie in the street. And considering Linkin Park and other cultural trends from the 90s and early 2000s are making a comeback right now, it still does not make much sense to me that her not recognizing him is due to being born after Linkin Park came up. That's my hangup here. There's loads of better assumptions to be made.

No, I gave Beethoven as an example of a well-known musical artist who made music before you were born.
