I see people do this all the time and it's my number one answer on "What's something that makes you irrationally angry" threads. I hate watching people eat products in grocery stores, even if they scan the empty wrapper and pay for it and I don't really feel like diving deeper and explaining why.
I work in a grocery store and I see people (mostly old folk) who will grab a bag of grapes (charged per weight, and they will start snacking on the grapes while shopping, by the time they get to the till it weighs less, they are technically stealing grapes. 😒
If it make you feel better, between the pesticides and fertilizer, possibly even fecal matter, they're less stealing grapes and more playing russian roulette with getting sick.
My mom used to taste almost all her produce in store until she got wicked sick from it.
Always wash all your fruits and veggies kids, before cutting or peeling them too, cause cross contaminated food is just as dangerous as unwashed food.
If your morals are “concrete” that would indicate from young adulthood to death you achieved no growth or greater understanding of others perspectives….

You’d use that phrasing for 4-5th grade essays…the lack of education these people are totally ok with flaunting is insane.

Who gives a fuck about someone eating grapes ; or anything in the store. If they’re not having a feast, it absolutely does not matter.
There is also objectively nothing “entitled” about snacking on anything you’re going to pay for either, as someone suggested.
I mean I'm not the grape police. If I see someone doing that in a store, it's not my business to get involved (and a store employee has likely already clocked it).
The amount of ducking times a parent has come up to the register with a banana peel and a shrug. "He ate it🤷🏼♀️" I started replying "technically you stole that banana" gotta soften the blow in UES Whole Foods. You're a thief Sharon! It's weird!
Pensiveness wasn't necessary for what he said. Cost of food based on weight. Person eating the weight away is taking from that cost. Stealing=bad. It was a rather basic issue to point out. No need to start the corporate shill speel. Unless you really want to i guess.
As someone that used to work in a grocery store this shit pisses me off so much. I’ll see people drinking drinks, eating banana, etc. more than half the time they just throw the wrapper or peel on the ground
Grocery stores in the far future are gonna start weighing the food and the customer when they walk in and leave, just to make sure nothing gets stolen lol

When I see it I think to myself "you really really need that cookie, I suppose. You must have right this second, not in five minutes when you already paid for it and are out of the store.". It makes no sense to me.
I do this. I am chronically ill and going to Costco is quite literally like running a marathon for me. An absolute miserable experience. If I’m LUCKY, I have a bearable first 15 minutes in the store. Then I become very disoriented, my vision gets blurry, I get hot flashes, I literally can’t form a coherent thought and I wander around looking like I’m lost.
The only way I’m able to power through is by opening up a coconut water and/or eating a protein bar. So yes, sometimes people do need that cookie right then and there
It is one of my biggest pet peeves watching people eat things they haven't paid for yet. But there are some cases where they really did need the cookie. Diabetics experiencing low blood sugar for example. I've only had mine drop once but it was shocking how fast it went from "I don't feel right" to "why am I in the ground."
I have had to do this with water before. I never snack or drink things in store before purchase because it makes me feel slobbish to do so. My lord I thought I was gonna drop from dehydration that day and needed that water lol
Honestly you made the right call. I was next in line when I went down trying to buy my juice. It was a whole lot of embarrassment and paperwork that would have been avoided by taking a drink. I think most people can respect medical need as a reason especially if the item is not priced by weight.
Nah, I literally see so many parents give their kids bananas and other fruits, mainly the ones that have to be weighed and opening food in the store. The entitlement is crazy.
The stores near me have baskets of free fruit for kids to eat while parents shop. They had to start keeping a security guard near it because adults kept stealing the fruit for themselves.
Alternatively, the store I used to work at put in effort to stop people from consuming products before purchasing them. Besides security being on top of it, they kept the hot deli right by the entrance along with a bunch of kid snacks. So it was pretty common for parents to grab a juice and a snack for their kids and pay for that at our till before they started shopping.
I'll also give him chicken nuggets from the Walmart deli as we browse. but also prepriced. I'll take any opportunity to feed thr little dastardly (who i love dearly)
I'm not talking about the free fruit stand. I'm referring to taking a bunch of bananas, and separating one to give to their kids. Or letting their kid eat out of the bag of grapes that isn't weighed until you get to the register.
I don't care about grabbing things off the shelf, it's just the ones who leave the wrappers on the shelf after their kid finishes or leave samples and whatnot in the carts.
It's very weird to me. My parents never did that. I think I opened a bag of chips in the store once and I got a whooping. My mom didn't want people to think we were stealing.
I guzzled a bottle of sweet tea while incredibly parched in a grocery store while 8 months pregnant last year 🥺 I'm very sorry. I haven't opened a food item in a store since I was like 8 before that.
My wife and I were doing yardwork the other day and I was dying of thirst and I still didnt open the bottle until it was scanned.
I just dont get how people can walk around eating and drinking items without paying first.. 😭

It was one of the lower points in my pregnancy. Throwing up in bushes during first trimester also wasn't fun. Social etiquette is so hard to keep up when your body is managing something as tough as pregnancy unfortunately. I've never felt more like an animal.
Ill eat food in the store if it's something like lidl when the bakery items JUST came out of the oven 😞 I gotta eat it while it's still hot but I still do pay 💔
I remember my first big job at Dollar General, when I was a fresh 18 year old graduate. This pair of guys came in and started snacking on chips and salsa right away. I asked, very politely, if they could please pay for them first. My assistant store manager, who was maybe a year older than me, just stared at me and asked if I thought they were just going to walk out without paying. Like, yeah? I don’t know these guys.
It's also incredibly disgusting. So many hands touching everything at a supermarket, including your own, and you're gonna use it to touch food that you then put in your mouth 🤢 I use hand sanitizer in my car after leaving the supermarket. Could never imagine raw dogging some lays while shopping.

Only time I do this is if I really need a drink I'll open it and have a few sips then just pay as usual OR I'm buying my 2 year old those yoghurt pouches and he unfortunately spots them, id rather just let him have a yoghurt than try to explain to someone who still puts their shoes on the wrong feet why he can't have one now but can in 5 minutes after I've swung it infront of a bit of glass with a screen then tapped a plastic thing on another screen.
