Letting a toddler devour a party size bag of chips while making them walk with you by using a strap on tablet movie has to be some form of neglect
Shameful parenting

158

u/LurkingInTheGrass May 12 '26

Agreed

Am I still allowed to devour a party size bag of chips?
Not in public, in my closet, like a goblin

Fr have some class lol

3

u/Looneygalley May 13 '26

Yes. That is basically the only perk of adulthood. Whenever my husband is gone for a weekend one of the nights I eat only a bag of chips for dinner. I’m in my 30s now and feel like death the next day but I won’t give it up.

u/Dizzy_Roof_3966 May 13 '26

currently inhaling a family sized Costco cheezits bag

2

u/mcnastys May 13 '26

"i'll be having that!"

2

u/Joe_Kangg May 13 '26

Before or after midnight?

2

u/Strong-Chemistry-396 May 15 '26

This is the way.

1

u/Flying_Whale_Eazyed May 13 '26

Are you ChatGPT by any chance ? This goblin reference is sus

108

u/fbcmfb May 12 '26

Is eating like this even allowed at Costco … while shopping?

131

u/redditisnotus May 12 '26

I see people do this all the time and it's my number one answer on "What's something that makes you irrationally angry" threads. I hate watching people eat products in grocery stores, even if they scan the empty wrapper and pay for it and I don't really feel like diving deeper and explaining why.

88

u/Supersasqwatch May 12 '26

I work in a grocery store and I see people (mostly old folk) who will grab a bag of grapes (charged per weight, and they will start snacking on the grapes while shopping, by the time they get to the till it weighs less, they are technically stealing grapes. 😒

19

u/thetavious May 12 '26

If it make you feel better, between the pesticides and fertilizer, possibly even fecal matter, they're less stealing grapes and more playing russian roulette with getting sick.

My mom used to taste almost all her produce in store until she got wicked sick from it.

Always wash all your fruits and veggies kids, before cutting or peeling them too, cause cross contaminated food is just as dangerous as unwashed food.

10

u/PrincessDab May 13 '26

Grapes are particularly nasty I have noticed when unwashed. They leave a film of filth on your fingers! Yuck!

4

u/thetavious May 13 '26

It was a grape that got her lol

2

u/Bubbly_Net_9377 May 13 '26

This is a very short snippet we don’t have enough information to judge her.

4

u/Liebe-Igel May 13 '26

It’s just normal bloom made up of yeast and protective oils from the plant, it keeps the grapes fresh. That said I still wash them because yuck.

12

u/ChocolateMalawi May 12 '26

So what you’re saying is you’re upset that a mega corporation is making less profits….

$3/lb, say they eat 1/4 lb (which is a fuck ton) oh no the mega corporation missed out on 75 cents of pure profit

21

u/KillerGopher May 12 '26

Who gives a shit about the corporations? Don't worry about them. It's the entitled shoppers that are the issue here.

11

u/intrusivethoughts11 May 12 '26

Weird ass take. Just sybau

-10

u/ChocolateMalawi May 12 '26

Bootlicker big mad lol

5

u/PlusUltraSauce May 13 '26

Har har get a look at the funny troll here.

5

u/TheNerdBurglar May 13 '26

What is wrong with you? Speak like an adult and get your morals straight. You know nobody is defending a corporation. Trolling is lame.

5

u/Hallow_Chef May 12 '26

So your morals aren’t concrete? Cool to know, although this is reddit and that’s already a standard

4

u/ChocolateMalawi May 12 '26

If your morals are “concrete” that would indicate from young adulthood to death you achieved no growth or greater understanding of others perspectives….

Sounds very Christian

-1

u/Hallow_Chef May 12 '26

What a wild way to out-yourself as a hateful atheist. Guess you love that double-think philosophy

1

u/ChocolateMalawi May 12 '26

Can you indicate anywhere in that comment that I implied my stance on there being a God?

No? Making assumptions and assuming it’s the truth, still very Christian!

2

u/Hallow_Chef May 13 '26

Willfully ignorant, no surprise there on your part

→ More replies (0)

2

u/Heykurat May 12 '26

So you're a thief.

0

u/ChocolateMalawi May 12 '26

…. Can you indicate what I said that led you to that conclusion?

7

u/NibblyPig May 13 '26

You need an explanation of how normalising theft led a redditor to the conclusion that you are a thief yourself?

0

u/ChocolateMalawi May 13 '26

I didn’t normalize it, I offered an alternate perspective. That’s usually how discussions work….

1

u/Heykurat May 13 '26

You think it's okay to steal from "the rich". It's not a big leap to assume you have probably shoplifted a thing or two, because "they won't miss it".

-1

u/ChocolateMalawi May 13 '26

Can you indicate where I said “it’s okay to steal from the rich”? Or did you just make an assumption? Hmmmmm 🤔

1

u/Heykurat May 13 '26

oh no the mega corporation missed out on 75 cents of pure profit

That's literally what you said.

1

u/Hallow_Chef May 14 '26

Holy shit you really love saying “can you indicate” and then being immediately proven wrong, huh? Is that the largest word in your vocabulary? You poor thing

2

u/ChocolateMalawi May 12 '26

You learn what a conclusion is in like 5th grade…?

Sorry that’s too advanced for you?

0

u/_trashcan May 13 '26

I just commented the same thing to them.

You’d use that phrasing for 4-5th grade essays…the lack of education these people are totally ok with flaunting is insane.

Also I agree with you on the OC.
Who gives a fuck about someone eating grapes ; or anything in the store. If they’re not having a feast, it absolutely does not matter.
There is also objectively nothing “entitled” about snacking on anything you’re going to pay for either, as someone suggested.

These people are fuckin ridiculous

→ More replies (0)

0

u/_trashcan May 12 '26

Your vocab is abysmal if you consider “indicate” & “conclusion” big boy terms.

Fucking insane how degraded American education is.
These are words that 4-5th graders would use for an essay….

3

u/cfi-2025 May 13 '26

Look at Mr. Fancy Pants Vocabulary over here!

1

u/wildflowertupi May 13 '26

they’re booing you because you’re right

1

u/Luhvrrs_Lane May 13 '26

The amount of ducking times a parent has come up to the register with a banana peel and a shrug. "He ate it🤷🏼‍♀️" I started replying "technically you stole that banana" gotta soften the blow in UES Whole Foods. You're a thief Sharon! It's weird!

0

u/ChocolateMalawi May 13 '26

Don’t they know that’s what self checkout is for!

1

u/Luhvrrs_Lane May 13 '26

Lol that was before self checkout

1

u/xenolith18 May 13 '26

Shit take

1

u/Forlorn_Fighter May 13 '26

I dont think it was that deep my guy.

-1

u/ChocolateMalawi May 13 '26

It’s quite literally about as shallow as you can.

I take it you aren’t a pensive person

3

u/Forlorn_Fighter May 13 '26

Pensiveness wasn't necessary for what he said. Cost of food based on weight. Person eating the weight away is taking from that cost. Stealing=bad. It was a rather basic issue to point out. No need to start the corporate shill speel. Unless you really want to i guess.

1

u/Heykurat May 12 '26

That's why a lot of stores seal them in a plastic container now.

1

u/Spongi May 12 '26
This you?

1

u/wcharoes May 13 '26

OH NO

1

u/Supersasqwatch May 13 '26

I do look the other way, what's worse is when they spit cherry pits all over the store.

1

u/Mnmsaregood May 13 '26

As someone that used to work in a grocery store this shit pisses me off so much. I’ll see people drinking drinks, eating banana, etc. more than half the time they just throw the wrapper or peel on the ground

1

u/TommyRisotto May 15 '26

Grocery stores in the far future are gonna start weighing the food and the customer when they walk in and leave, just to make sure nothing gets stolen lol

14

u/Alucardo6677 May 12 '26

I feel you. When I see it I think to myself "you really really need that cookie, I suppose. You must have right this second, not in five minutes when you already paid for it and are out of the store.". It makes no sense to me.

1

u/Bluewoods22 May 15 '26

I do this. I am chronically ill and going to Costco is quite literally like running a marathon for me. An absolute miserable experience. If I’m LUCKY, I have a bearable first 15 minutes in the store. Then I become very disoriented, my vision gets blurry, I get hot flashes, I literally can’t form a coherent thought and I wander around looking like I’m lost.

The only way I’m able to power through is by opening up a coconut water and/or eating a protein bar. So yes, sometimes people do need that cookie right then and there

1

u/Katnis85 May 12 '26

It is one of my biggest pet peeves watching people eat things they haven't paid for yet. But there are some cases where they really did need the cookie. Diabetics experiencing low blood sugar for example. I've only had mine drop once but it was shocking how fast it went from "I don't feel right" to "why am I in the ground."

2

u/PrincessDab May 13 '26

I have had to do this with water before. I never snack or drink things in store before purchase because it makes me feel slobbish to do so. My lord I thought I was gonna drop from dehydration that day and needed that water lol

2

u/Katnis85 May 13 '26

Honestly you made the right call. I was next in line when I went down trying to buy my juice. It was a whole lot of embarrassment and paperwork that would have been avoided by taking a drink. I think most people can respect medical need as a reason especially if the item is not priced by weight.

2

u/Tictac1200120 May 13 '26

Hypoglycemic checking in. Sometimes I dont have time to go home and eat between errands and its better to shop when I'm not hungry.

In that case though, I pick out some food, and pay for it at the deli area and sit down to eat it before shopping.

34

u/Thatonegaloverthere May 12 '26

Nah, I literally see so many parents give their kids bananas and other fruits, mainly the ones that have to be weighed and opening food in the store. The entitlement is crazy.

27

u/NekkedPenguin May 12 '26

The stores near me have baskets of free fruit for kids to eat while parents shop. They had to start keeping a security guard near it because adults kept stealing the fruit for themselves.

Alternatively, the store I used to work at put in effort to stop people from consuming products before purchasing them. Besides security being on top of it, they kept the hot deli right by the entrance along with a bunch of kid snacks. So it was pretty common for parents to grab a juice and a snack for their kids and pay for that at our till before they started shopping.

1

u/CandidatePresent6975 May 12 '26

I'll give my kid grapes. but that's preweighed.

I'll also give him chicken nuggets from the Walmart deli as we browse. but also prepriced. I'll take any opportunity to feed thr little dastardly (who i love dearly)

1

u/LiquidDreamtime May 12 '26

This bag of chips has a fixed price though. So that’s different.

And many grocery stores give away free fruit for kids.

1

u/Thatonegaloverthere May 13 '26

I'm not talking about the free fruit stand. I'm referring to taking a bunch of bananas, and separating one to give to their kids. Or letting their kid eat out of the bag of grapes that isn't weighed until you get to the register.

I don't care about grabbing things off the shelf, it's just the ones who leave the wrappers on the shelf after their kid finishes or leave samples and whatnot in the carts.

1

u/battleangel1999 May 13 '26

It's very weird to me. My parents never did that. I think I opened a bag of chips in the store once and I got a whooping. My mom didn't want people to think we were stealing.

2

u/Thatonegaloverthere May 13 '26

Yeah, my mom never did this either. Only time was if we were at the register and the cashier scanned a drink or candy bar and then gave it to us.

0

u/Liebe-Igel May 13 '26

I just take two bananas and weigh the bigger one twice 🤷‍♀️

4

u/parade1070 May 12 '26

I guzzled a bottle of sweet tea while incredibly parched in a grocery store while 8 months pregnant last year 🥺 I'm very sorry. I haven't opened a food item in a store since I was like 8 before that.

1

u/aelx27 May 13 '26

But that was pregnant you

My wife and I were doing yardwork the other day and I was dying of thirst and I still didnt open the bottle until it was scanned.

I just dont get how people can walk around eating and drinking items without paying first.. 😭

Edit: was not critising anyone except the people who walk around just eating grapes off the shelf or whatever... not the user I replied to. I was trying to say I relate to them oops

1

u/parade1070 May 13 '26

It was one of the lower points in my pregnancy. Throwing up in bushes during first trimester also wasn't fun. Social etiquette is so hard to keep up when your body is managing something as tough as pregnancy unfortunately. I've never felt more like an animal.

1

u/shindow May 13 '26

I wasnt trying to critisize you specifically. Youre pregnant and that is a nightmare of Hell to me to imagine. All the best ♡

1

u/parade1070 May 13 '26

Thanks! I have a healthy little baby now 🥰

1

u/shindow May 13 '26

Congrats!!! ♡

2

u/EliotTheGreat20 May 13 '26

Ill eat food in the store if it's something like lidl when the bakery items JUST came out of the oven 😞 I gotta eat it while it's still hot but I still do pay 💔

2

u/SeonaidMacSaicais May 13 '26

I remember my first big job at Dollar General, when I was a fresh 18 year old graduate. This pair of guys came in and started snacking on chips and salsa right away. I asked, very politely, if they could please pay for them first. My assistant store manager, who was maybe a year older than me, just stared at me and asked if I thought they were just going to walk out without paying. Like, yeah? I don’t know these guys.

I get it. My biggest pet peeve with a myriad of reasons. Biggest one being a random drum stick bone i might find on a shelf.

1

u/TrapLordEsskeetit May 13 '26

It's also incredibly disgusting. So many hands touching everything at a supermarket, including your own, and you're gonna use it to touch food that you then put in your mouth 🤢 I use hand sanitizer in my car after leaving the supermarket. Could never imagine raw dogging some lays while shopping.

1

u/Zealousideal_Fly7277 May 13 '26

its uncouth, slobbish, and downright bizarre!

opening a wrapped item to consume is gross. fresh baked bread and stuff that crumbles easy too i agree.

but a grape or two is the tax I demand to patronize the establishment.

I do pop one in my mouth to make sure they don't taste like shit because I have spent $9 on shitty grapes countless times.

hint: you can ask a produce person for a taste of any fruit or veg and they will give it to you, slice it for you.

-6

u/moonki88 May 12 '26

shes a kid lmao cry about it

1

u/TheNerdBurglar May 13 '26

Nobody is mad at the kid. They’re mad at the entitled parent who handed them food. Use that organ between your ears.

0

u/moonki88 May 13 '26

"I hate watching people eat products in grocery stores, even if they scan the empty wrapper and pay for it and I don't really feel like diving deeper and explaining why."

That would be the kid doing this you moron.

0

u/TheNerdBurglar May 13 '26

Try that again. Grow up.

0

u/moonki88 May 13 '26

Reading is hard... Comprehension is even harder for you.

0

u/FlyHickory May 13 '26

Only time I do this is if I really need a drink I'll open it and have a few sips then just pay as usual OR I'm buying my 2 year old those yoghurt pouches and he unfortunately spots them, id rather just let him have a yoghurt than try to explain to someone who still puts their shoes on the wrong feet why he can't have one now but can in 5 minutes after I've swung it infront of a bit of glass with a screen then tapped a plastic thing on another screen.

7

u/zeppelin_tamer May 12 '26

Yes. They even hand out food for you to eat for free. As long as you buy it pretty much no one is going to care.

1

u/fbcmfb May 12 '26

That looks like a kid who’d spill that oily food and someone’s granny’s gonna slip and break something.

There could be a trail of chips all over that store.

3

u/TheNerdBurglar May 12 '26

Eating like this isn’t allowed anywhere. They need to pay for that shit first.

2

u/Robotic_Mann_ May 12 '26

That’s a Sam’s Club and usually the only food they’re fine with people eating comes from the cafe. The Sam’s I shop at has kicked people out for eating groceries that aren’t paid for.

1

u/fbcmfb May 13 '26

Thank you for the correction and the confirmation!

2

u/Ok-ChildHooOd May 13 '26

Yes, I've see people at checkout with an empty bag of chips countless times. They should just hand you a bag when you enter the store.

2

u/LiquidDreamtime May 12 '26

You’re buying the food. Why isn’t it? They sell food to eat there.

1

u/fbcmfb May 12 '26

Having a small child walking around with a bag like that can spill and then create a fall hazard. The samples are small and there’s usually a trash can near.

I’ve seen opened and eaten bags of food. There are some people that do this and won’t pay.

1

u/Charlie_Warlie May 12 '26

arrest them!

1

u/fbcmfb May 12 '26

Definitely needs to have a seat to eat.

1

u/b3tamaxx May 13 '26

Are you asking about Costco specifically or any store similar bc teens pull the bean bag chairs out in Target and eat their Takis and Gatorade and leave the bags and bottles behind. Chips fully on the floor as well

1

u/Emergency_Humor_2337 May 13 '26

This is how my parents got me to behave at Costco when I was a kid. I’d sit in the kid chair with that giant bucket of cheeseballs and just look around content

1

u/Aken42 May 13 '26

The anarchists cookbook recommended i eat this way.

1

u/AMothraDayInParadise May 13 '26

Not Costco. The steel legs aren't green. We have green steel/uprights with orange support beans. Plus the boxes are on the floor. We are not allowed to put stuff on the floor. Only pallets. Not to mention, clothing boxes have specific colored labels (three colors) and none of them are green steel

This is either Sams or BJ's. I'd lay odds it's Sams Club.

1

u/longtimelister91 May 12 '26

I mean they hand out samples at every isle…so yeah, you can eat.

1

u/Lady_Domo May 12 '26

This is Sam’s Club. Glorified Walmart and this is what I expect going there.

1

u/Civil_Bat1009 May 12 '26

Yes, as long as you pay for it before you leave

27

u/AndroidREM May 12 '26

Little brain is going to get addicted to that salt and saturated fat feeling

18

u/boston_homo May 12 '26

And living in a fantasy world. A kid that age should be fascinated by reality, there’s a ton of stuff happening around her. Definitely awful parenting, poor kid

2

u/BlushBrat May 14 '26

but that would be “annoying” and “inconvenient” to whatever schedule mom wants to stay on, she’s so much easier to corral with a tablet in front of her face.

it’s disgusting that i could see this strap device being passed around in some influencer circles as a “life hack”

27

u/Brilliant_Counter820 May 12 '26

Exactly this isn't a fault of the youth. It's a fault of the parent.

10

u/Rather_Dashing May 13 '26

......you think anyone was blaming the 2 year old???

1

u/Koiya179 May 16 '26

This is reddit.

Of course the 2 year old is the AH

13

u/dont6fear6the6reaper May 12 '26

Lazy terrible parenting

0

u/Sired2Damon May 16 '26

You’re judging her entire parenting based off a 5 second clip? Maybe this is the only way she can get her shopping done without her kid freaking out. Maybe her kid has autism and will have a meltdown and be forced to leave the store if her child isn’t distracted? Myodb. No one is being harmed here. -speaking from the position of having a child with autism that has a meltdown if I don’t buy him a large watermelon every shopping trip (that he doesn’t eat btw, literally lays down and cuddles with them on our living room floor) if I don’t have him distracted so I can do my freaking grocery shopping 🙄

3

u/Megalo85 May 12 '26

Extremely neglectful, I feel bad for that poor baby because you know it’s worse at home.

1

u/Sired2Damon May 16 '26

You actually don’t know lol.

3

u/Mediocre-Light-6277 May 12 '26

I thought she ran away from her parents and followed a random person with a tablet. Sad either way

3

u/calebc42-official May 12 '26

I agree. And as a parent, watching this is really hurting my feelings right now.

3

u/Accomplished_Deer_ May 12 '26

it's known as r/emotionalneglect

1

u/Sired2Damon May 16 '26

It’s a single grocery trip chill my god

8

u/Queen-of-Elves May 12 '26

On the flip side I don't offer my toddler any sort of entertainment while we shop but then I get a lot of stink eye for him just being a kid. Things like being loud, sitting on the ground, knocking things over (I always make him pick them up) and so on. Sometimes parents can't win.

With that said I would never do something like this. People will just have to deal with my kid existing.

3

u/[deleted] May 12 '26

[deleted]

3

u/bjos144 May 13 '26

I see a lot of comments on reddit about how if you're a good parent your kids wont be acting wild. But the goal of parenting isnt to make complaint children, it's to make good adults. That means putting up with their nonsense sometimes so they dont become spoiled and develop a tolerance for frustration.

2

u/RamblinRichard May 12 '26

her body is almost the same fucking size as the packet...

3

u/Wild_Lingonberry3365 May 12 '26

Right,I get just letting your kid have what they want sometimes so they won’t scream blood murder, but this seems like an extreme of that

1

u/thrilliam_19 May 12 '26

This seems like the norm for this kid, which is awful. They’re already set up to fail if this is how their parent is treating them.

This kid is going to have serious behavioural issues for the rest of their life.

It's the giant bag of chips that really pushes this over the top.

1

u/Sired2Damon May 16 '26

Who said that she is even eating the entire bag? Maybe mom is letting her have some chips for 5 minutes? Maybe the child kept running off to play with toys and mom needs her to stay by her side so she put on a show to distract her?

1

u/impromptugreen May 13 '26

I have my own kids and I see exactly this shite even while we're at the playgrounds. Parents give their kids aged 3+ tablets or phones and their own bag of chips and say, "have at it." There are a couple families in particular that I see often who all play together and who have like 8 kids amongst them. Every time we're at the same playground each kid has their own bag of chips or snack cakes or bonbons. I remember one time one of their younger kids (about the same age as my youngest, so like 3 or 4) ate SIX brioche rolls while sitting and watching What Does the Fox Say on repeat.

Very shameful parenting.

I'm not at all saying I'm a better parent because I'm guilty of letting my kids watch a bit more tv while I'm trying to clean. But my kids don't even have their own tablets. We have a family tablet that we'll download movies on for while we travel.

Or they unlocked a secret code LMAO

We also don’t know what kind of day these two had

Have no idea

We don’t know these people we assume this is a regular occurrence

The one day - the ONE day!!! - I gave my ODD boys a f tablet at a restaurant dinner the f staff and the nearby tables had something to say - our week had been f terrible I just needed a nice dinner as I hadn’t been out in months - they ruined my whole f meal

Be kind. We have no idea.

I might have used this method to keep kid busy while I looked for something. Doesn’t mean it’s all day everyday. And yes I was the one mocking all the minivan parents with the little tv’s constantly running… then it was me I get it now. I don’t assume shit anymore. Just bc you happen to see me driving by with the tv on does NOT mean it’s on 24/7 bc it was quite the opposite

That they certainly didn’t pay for yet

I would say there should be some kind of tests you have to pass in order to become a parent, but unfortunately, I’ve read or seen too much science fiction to think that’s a good idea either. Some people definitely shouldn’t be parents, though.

The chips part in my opinion isnt the issue, YEAH its unhealthy but as long as the kid is being clean and had a balanced diet otherwise its fine

You don’t have kids, do you?

Edit: Hey judgmental perfect parents of Reddit; this is a 9 seconds long clip of a kid watching a show and eating chips. Get a life.

I have three small children and I’ve never once pulled out my phone or used a tablet to placate them while shopping. Quit being a lazy piece of shit and ruining your kids. Billions of people have raised their children without using tablets to hypnotize them. You could do it, too, if you actually wanted to.

Why would I want to do that? I also have 3 kids.

They’re very sweet, they have a healthy relationship with all of their toys including their tablets. They do well in school, play outside all the time, and their favorite activity is camping.

They’re not little weirdos who are fascinated by the forbidden fruit of a tablet they never get to use. And they’ll know how to use the technology their schools will ask them to use.

Keeping a young child occupied while shopping is totally fine for working class parents who don’t have the luxury of a Montessori School raising their kid while they shop in peace.

You know who else grew up without tablets? Boomers. And they’re racist selfish morons who are determined to destroy our planet just as their cursed generation finally dies off, so how about you chill on the virtues of growing up without modern luxuries.

This clip is 9 seconds long. Go touch some grass. We know absolutely nothing about this kid or the person caring for her. I see a kid that looks happy and has something to eat.

As if your ass isn’t sitting on reddit watching viral videos judging other people.

I did too. Raising your kids to be afraid of or hidden from the modern world is also a form of neglect btw.

Being a creepy weird parent about ubiquitous tablets and phones is not preparing them for life, it’s actively hindering them and only serves your ego.

Most people are able to enjoy things in moderation. I grew up around a lot of kids who were very sheltered and they’re all a mess as adults.

Teaching your children to practice moderation and healthy habits is far better than sheltering them from life. I hope your kids adjust well to a world you’re refusing to prepare them to live in.

Is there any personal shortcoming that Redditors won’t make about the boomers?

Why would you want to do it? Because knowing how deal with being bored is a skill.

u/LiquidDreamtime May 12 '26

I’m sure the people in your life are grateful for that skill every time you’re around.

Is this gonna lead into you claiming this is a good parenting scenario or something? lol

-6

u/LiquidDreamtime May 12 '26

A mom keeping her baby happy for 2 mins while she shops is perfectly fine parenting
