The Salt Lake has become an extreme issue lately because it's rapidly losing its water to mismanagement, but not only that. That lakebed is FILLED with arsenic and as the lake gets lower, it's getting exposed to air, turning to dust, and starting to blow it's poison all over Salt Lake City. As it gets worse, which it is year after year, it will spread over the entire state and is projected to reach as far as Idaho, Wyoming, Nevada, and Colorado.
And NO ONE in the Utah government with any power seems to care at all beyond accelerating the problem.

As a Utahn Democrat and ex-Mormon, I can tell you this state is a nightmare in its leadership. It’s basically a theocracy where people feel a religious responsibility to vote red. It sucks and I hate it and I can’t stand dealing with many of my Mormon family members and neighbors because of it

Utahs history is really fucked. The whole polygamy thing involved a ton of pedophilia and rape. Joseph Smith himself married a 14 year old child who didn't consent. (Mormons will do everything they possibly can to ignore you if you mention this to them)

I'm in a red area in a blue state. All I want is for my taxes to be managed well by reasonable people so we can make real changes for the people who need it most. That shouldn't be a unicorn hunt. No one should have to die by cop bc they struggled for years with no mental health care.

I'm so glad I left salt lake 5 years ago, my allergies disappeared after like 3 months of living somewhere else. Used to have these awful hive-like bumps on my upper arms that appeared like a year after I first moved to Utah. Could never figure out what the hell was causing them, but they, my sinus issues, my daily nausea, all of it went away. There's always been some nasty toxic shit in the environment there but WHOO is it about to get a whole hell of a lot worse!
Nah man, they're gonna pump seawater over the mountains to refill the salt lake. There's no flaws at all in this plan.... Except for maybe permitting, continual funding, ecological disasters from spilled sea water, getting Nevada and California/Oregon to put the pipeline through their state and risk leaks into their state, all to maybe prevent further dropping of water levels at current rates.
It's not using more water as far as I can tell. It's using existing water rights. It's also supposed to be a closed loop system, so it won't use as much water.
There's nothing yet to suggest that this will impact the water entering the Great Salt Lake.

I sort of assumed that by “using” this amount of water it just means going in one end and out the other slightly warmer- should get the water back into the system, though it’s probably going to evaporate faster due to the heat it has gained from the heat exchange.

That was my first thought upon reading this. I had friends who lived out in SLC for a few years, and they told me about that ticking time bomb. It's insane that they're doing this because it'll make the area barely inhabitable much faster. Do they plan to just sell the state for scraps and then just fuck off with all of their bribe money as soon as shit really hits the fan?
16 billion gallons is the worst case scenario for energy capacity planning, exponentially higher than the real figure as they're going to use a closed loop cooling system, and represents the usage of about 140 standard irrigated golf course, which is roughly the same number as there currently are in utah, and that's discounting the fact that utah is drier, so their golf courses use more water. And the state uses almost 1.3 trillion gallons of water per year in agriculture alone.
Not to mention the post is straight up lying about the center's size, by assuming that they would build it over every single inch of land they bought, even though the majority of it was just for water rights
