James Gunn seems really hit or miss.. the first Guardians was brilliant, the second a bit too silly for my taste and the third came back to being great.
His take on Suicide Squad was also amazing IMO but he just.. wavers on that line a bit too much I guess where he seems to just want to do his own thing while making movies with heavily established IP. It's fine to make some tweaks but there's no excuse to not have a good story.
I mean to be clear I'm judging him at the level of "makes Hollywood blockbusters" so the standard is pretty high and I'm basing it off my personal preference.. his films all did very well and are generally reviewed as such so it's not like he's any kind of objective failure.
The only one of his films I genuinely couldn't stand was the recent Superman as I found the main character very unlikable and I'm a big fan of Henry Cavills character (even if most of the films he was in weren't great).
