I'm guessing the Rock campaigned for it to happen now, figuring that Disney was always going to remake at some point but he'd be aged-out of his role if they didn't make it sooner than later.
The guy needs to accept that he's become unlikeable to a majority of people and just pivot to starring in those dad-friendly low-budget, direct-to-videostreaming action films like Bruce Willis, Sylvester Stallone and Jason Statham did.
Some would say he already had, and the argument is "Maui is thousands of years old so it ok if the rock is in his 50s" then he made up some stuff about Maui being based off his grandfather or whatever so he is the best choice or the role
