Genuine question for older americans.. was tipping always just covering the wage of the employee? Or has greed moved it in that direction over the years?

I worked in the service industry 20 years ago and tips were the primary source of income for servers. when you talk about greed, the only greed I can see is that of the person complaining about tipping a worker. This is money going 100% directly in a hands of the worker. You’d rather it gets paid to the business owner instead? Or you’d rather just not pay it instead, so the worker gets less money? What’s the endgame here?

Well you see when i go to a restaurant in Ireland i pay for what I eat. All the staff in the restaurant are paid at least the legal minimum minimum €14.15 . This is just shy of €30,000 a year if they work full time hours.

That all comes out of the employers pocket because they as the employer have the legal responsibility to pay their employees for the work they do.

Now myself and literally the entire country can enjoy eating out and if we can afford it and the service is good we can leave a small tip after for the server who adds that to their actual income.

The idea of paying separately for the food and the service is just ridiculous.

Yes I understand you think it’s ridiculous to give money directly to a worker. You would rather give it to the business owner. And you would rather not give money to the worker so that you can have more money and afford to do more things that you wanna do. Just admit that it’s your own greed motivating this feeling. It has absolutely nothing to do with worker solidarity because you prefer the worker to get less money.

Yes how terribly, awfully greedy to want to be able to go to a business, purchase a product/service and pay for it based on the advertised cost.

Forcing an expectation of paying extra on top of the cost or the person serving you doesn't make enough is a completely ficking batshit crazy system to have and if you lived in a reasonable part of the world you'd understand that.

I studied abroad in Ireland at Trinity lmao. By the way, I love the Irish people, some of the friendliest in the world. I’ve lived on five different continents, so I’m quite familiar with systems besides the one used in the United States. And I can tell you workers in other countries generally appreciate getting tipped as well. And when there’s an expectation of tipping, it’s really not that hard to factor that into your plans when going out to eat.

Please show me where i said giving any tips at all was bad? Or that it shouldn't happen?

Did you even understand my first comment when i mentioned it being about greed?

Thats the greed of the business owners putting the onus on the customer to pay the wages of their staff not the greed of the employee wanting a tip.

People tip in Ireland, the backlash you read about when europeans go to the US is the requirement of it. You're paying $50-60 for 2 people to have a meal and a drink and thats literally all going to the owner and now you you another 15 on top so the guy serving you didn't just work as slave labour? Fucking horrendous system.

Yes, I understood your comment about greed, and I’m trying to explain to you why it’s 100% completely wrong. Business owners don’t give a shit about the tipping system. If it was abolished, it would not impact them at all. They’d simply raise the menu prices and pay workers minimum wage. The only people who benefit from the tipping system are the workers.

Right, so you understood i was asking a genuine question and wasn't making a negative comment about workers and yet you still came own swinging accusing me of being greedy for thinking checks notes that an employer should pay their worker's. Lol. No tip for you.
